DEPARMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY KAKTIYA UNIVERSITY, WARANGAL (SAP-DRS Identified Department) About the Department Courses Offered Infrastructure Faculty Syllabus Photogallery 1 1.About the Department Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary course which encompasses all basic science subjects. It is a technology with profuse agricultural, medicinal and industrial applications. It was established with an objective to provide teaching and research to young students and equip them to meet the growing need of the state and country. The seeds of this department were sown in the Department of Botany in the form of introducing Plant Tissue Culture as one of the specialization in Botany during 1984-1985 through the assistance of UGC VII plan. Later the same specialization was restructured as Plant Biotechnology. Through inputs of active teaching and research by committed teachers, the specialization has got enough platform to elevate the specialization into a separate course. In the year 2000 under the aegis of Department of Botany, M.Sc. Biotechnology took roots. The course was inaugurated on 23rd August, 2000 by renowned scientist Prof. Asis Datta, Former Vice- Chancellor, Jawaharlal University, New Delhi. OBJECTIVES: • To train students (from rural areas) in Biotechnology at Post Graduate Level. • To create intelligent and skilled human resource to cope up with the development of science and industry. • To motivate students to enter into modern research and technology ADVISORY COMMITTEE: The advisory committee was constituted by the University to make suggestions in the development of course curriculum and to evaluate the progress of the student from time to time. The committee meets once in a year. The committee consists of: • Prof.N Linga Murthy, Vice-Chancellor, Kakatiya University, Warangal • Prof.D Balasubramanian, Director of Research, L.V.Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad.

Pharmacoepidemiology Of Cancer In Southern India. The Internet Journal of Epidemiology. 2009 Volume 8 Number 1. Abstract Objective: Warangal district in Andhra Pradesh, southern India, records over many cancer cases each year. We aimed to describe the frequency, distribution, and assess quality of management and subsequent outcomes from cancer in one large hospital in the district. Methods: We reviewed data of all patients admitted with different types of cancer to a district government hospital for the years 2003 to 2006. For these years, details of the particular cancer patients admitted and management were abstracted from the medical files.Findings: During these four years, 1753 patients were admitted in the hospital with different types of cancer. More detailed data from the years 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 reveals that older people are more prone to any type of cancer. Incidence of cancer is more in females. Most common type of cancer in females is cervix cancer in this part of country [30%]. Women above 40 age are prone to breast and ovarian cancers [20%].The most common type of cancer in males is mouth cancer [25%].Conclusion: It is likely that these findings reflect the situation in many rural hospitals of the southern India region. Even without an increase in resources, there appear to be significant opportunities for reducing cancer incidence by better medical management and further development on the reduction of cancer.

Introduction Kakatiyas- an indigenous Telugu dynasty ruled over the Andhradesa consisting of modern states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh from 10th century AD to the first quarter of 14th century AD. The name ‘Kakatiya’ is derived from goddess Kakati- a mother goddess Durga, venerated by the dynasty. Gunadya Rashtrakuta was the first known personality of the Kakatiya clan. He was the commander of the Rashtrakuta Krishna II who died in the battlefield while fighting with the Eastern Chalukyas. King Krishna II, very pleased with Gundaya’s loyal service towards him, rewarded Ereya, Gunadya’s son with the governorship of the Korivi region. Kakatiyas were the feudatories of Rashtrakuta kings upto 10th century AD after which they were overthrown by the Kalyana Chalukyas. Kakatiyas then became the feudatories or samanthas of Kalyana Chalukyans. The Kakatiya rulers Beta I (AD 996–1051), Prola I (AD 1052–1076), Beta II (AD 1076–1108), Durgaraja (AD 1108–1116) and Prola II (AD 1116– 1157) served the Kalyana Chalukyas until the collapse of Chalukya empire during Tailapa III’s reign.

JAYA RAO OF THE INDIAN ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICE DIRECTOR OF CENSUS OPERATIONS ANDHRA PRADESH PUBLISHED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF ANDHRA PRADESH 1986 POTHANA - THE GREAT DEVOUT POET The motif presented on the cover page represents Bammera Pothana, also called Pothanamatya, a devout poet belonging to the 15th century A. D. said to have hailed from the village Bammera near Warangal. The spiritual history of India is replete with devotional poetry and it was termed as BHAKTI movement, the 'CULT OF DEVOTION'. The SRIMADANDHRA MAHA BHAGA VATHAM rendered in Telugu by Pothana gave necessary fillip to this movement And nay! he could be treated as a progenitor of this movement. Pothana started this movement even before Chaitanya started the same movement in Bengal and Vallabh8chC/rya in Gujarat. In the Telugu country, this movement wastaken to great heights by Saints and lyricists like Annamacharya, Kshetrayya and Ramadas of Bhadrachalam fa"!e. Besides Bhagavatham,Pothana wrote VEERABHADRA VIJAYAM in praise of Lord Siva, which could be considered almost a Saivaite AGAMA SASTRA, BHOGINI DANDAKAM and NARA YANA SATAKAM, a devotional composition in praise of Lord Narayana or Vishnu. Pothana was a great poet of aesthetic eminence and his style was so simple and attractive to the common people as well as pedants. It is charming and sweet, and it won the hearts of the Telugu speaking people in a great sweep. He was one among the three or four top ranking Telugu poets of those days and even today.
