By Sydni Goza Community Services of Northeast Texas (CSNT) is a $10 million organization which oper- ates in 19 counties and is aimed at helping North- east Texas families lead improved, empowered, and self-reliant lives by applying available strate- gies. That is their mission statement. Familiar pro- grams such as Head Start, Vet Services Now, and the Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program (CEAP), plus many more programs are funded by CSNT, and right now, they have $4 million to help Northeast Texas families in need. Whether someone needs their electricity bill caught up, or an elderly person needs a taxi service to a doctor’s appointment, or someone wants to put their child in Head Start, the resources are there, they’re available, and it’s free. In 1964, Lyndon Johnson declared uncondi- tional war on poverty. At the time, about 30 mil- lion people were living in poverty and over half of those people were children. Johnson created the Office of Economic Opportunity and signed the Economic Opportunity Act (OEO) that same year and created community action agencies like CSNT today, at the community level where it cre- ated Head Start, Vista, Job Corps, the Grandpar- ents Initiative and more. Poverty was a big issue. At the same time, the Civil Rights movement was happening and the Voters Right Act happened. All of these things Johnson did and created and meshed them all together in an effort to fix pover- ty and fix civil rights. About a thousand agencies like CSNT were created back then. The OEO act was eventually replaced in 1981 by the Commu- nity Services Block Grant (CSBG), which is what funds CSNT and other community service agen- cies and how CSNT gets the money to fund other programs, like Head Start and Vista. “Community Services of Northeast Texas— most people can’t tell you what we do; our mis- sion statement, they don’t know our vision, our values. They don’t know anything about us, but they do know Head Start. They do know the Vet- erans program. And they do know the Utilities programs. They know all the programs that we do; they just don’t know the name. And we’re kind of okay with that,” Dan Boyd, Executive Director Linden Public Library celebrated its one-year opening on June 19. By Kenny Mitchell Special to the Journal-Sun The East Texas Republican Women hosted an information session on the proposed Marvin Nichols Reservoir on June 15 in Queen City. Kate Stow started the speaking presentations off with a historical review of the proposed lake and the history of the lands and the heritage that would be put under water if the reservoir is approved by the Texas Water Development Board. Region D representative Jim Thompson then spoke, starting off with the statement “This reservoir is flawed.” Thompson defined the proposed reservoir as a really bad thing for the people of Northeast Texas. ••••• Inside This Old House ••••• Linden Public House Article and Photos By Kate Stow Centuries ago, in Eu- rope, farming communities would designate a home in a central locale as a “public house,” or “pub” for short. It was a place for gathering, drinking spirits and hold- ing meetings. A century later, in Lin- den, Texas, the home built by Lester Looney Harper in 1916 was transformed into one such place. After a brief period of closure, it was re- cently opened again by new owners, Michael and Na- talie Gorman of California. How the Rabb-its came to be

By Tim Emmons [email protected]

In this life we know people who have done extraor- dinary things. People who have gone above and beyond what was intended or asked of them. People who have shaped the landscape of their lives and those around them. I love history. I love knowing how towns received their names or how certain events unfolded. I love learning how people or events changed the course of history, especially when it involved a good turn for the best. One name comes to mind when I think of a person who has shaped the landscape of their life and those around them and that man was William Edward Rabb. Rabb was a caring man who shaped the course of history during WW I and WW II, outlined rules for football in the state of Texas, brought football to At- lanta High School, helped countless abandoned ani- mals find homes, cared deeply for those around him, dedicated himself to land conservation and many more things. For those who don’t know or may have forgotten, Rabb was more than just the creator of Atlanta High School football; he was a dedicated father, military man, attorney, coach, educator and friend to many. Articles like these would not be possible without the countless notes and letters given to us by his daughter, the late and dearly missed Marilee Rabb Chapman, and other family members. If ever there was someone who exhibited and radi- ated Atlanta Rabbit pride it was Mrs. Marilee. You could hear the enamored love for her father and the Atlanta school district in each word when conversing with her by phone or letter. As I embraced the words she spoke or wrote I thought how astounding this man must have been. I thought to myself, “how humbling it would have been to live in those days and be in contact with such He agreed and the first thing on his agenda was a remarkable person”. talking all of the dropout players in returning to As former Journal writer Sonny Long pointed out school with the promise they could play football. in his Rabb article back in 1989 – I found more than Not only did they return they all graduated and be- a self-made man who worked his way through college came successful in life. and law school.
