The ASC is comprised of academic and faculty stakeholders from throughout the university. It is comprised of members of the President’s Executive Leaders (direct reports) and Senior Managers. The Executive Cabinet members represent, report progress on, and communicate back to the main institutional committees (WSCUC Steering Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Academic Steering Committee, Student Success Committee). The Executive Cabinet meets in weekly “scrum” meetings and minutes document actions taken and are distributed after each meeting. The Strategic Plan’s focus areas (Institutional Effectiveness, Students and Faculty, Organization and Facilities and Finance and Regulatory Compliance) build upon the Academy’s mission and vision. Assigned area leads are tasked with implementing and monitoring initiatives tied to critical success factors for each focus area. The Strategic Planning Committee meets on a quarterly basis to monitor and track progress on driving the strategic plan forward, in alignment with the annual budgetary approval process. The Student Success Committee reviews and responds to disaggregated student data to inform its work, including monitoring and tracking actions taken in response to the results of the annual Student Satisfaction Survey. The WSCUC Steering Committee is responsible for driving the self-study, managing timelines and reporting and completion of all aspects of WSCUC accreditation (offsite review, peer review team visits, reaffirmation, mid-cycle review, annual report etc.) The Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO) facilitates communication with our WSCUC Staff Liaison, engages participation in accreditation across campus and serves as an ongoing resource on accreditation. Center Mark Larrimore, [email protected], 65 W.11th St., Rm 454 When the New School for Social Research opened its doors a hundred years ago, it offered courses in the social sciences and public affairs – and a new vision of higher education. It was not a university; it did not offer degrees. The founders thought that people would come to the school for “no other purpose than to learn.” A century later, the New School has changed in almost every way. Design, the arts, a spirit of activism, and degree programs dominate. But the school continues to strive to offer disciplinary experimentation, political involvement, and a global lens that offers a critical perspective on higher education. In what ways have these values been realized (or not), and how? We construct answers to these questions by assembling a history of the school from scrapbooks of newspaper articles, memoirs, artwork, and interviews. The basis of the course are the academic and artistic works of The New School’s faculty and students since its establishment. We will also participate in university centenary activities throughout the semester. Learning Objectives ● Learn about archives, how to navigate them and build historical interpretations from sources in them. ● Learn various research methods, including archival investigation and interviews. ● Understand central issues of higher education over the last century and into the future. ● Write papers that convey analytical thinking, a command of readings, original ideas, and accurate acknowledgement of sources.

    ABSTRACT Title of Document: COMMUNICATING FEAR IN FILM MUSIC: A SOCIOPHOBIC ANALYSIS OF ZOMBIE FILM SOUNDTRACKS Pedro Gonzalez-Fernandez Master of Arts, 2014 Directed By: Dr. Patrick Warfield, Musicology The horror film soundtrack is a complex web of narratological, ethnographic, and semiological factors all related to the social tensions intimated by a film. This study examines four major periods in the zombie’s film career—the Voodoo zombie of the 1930s and 1940s, the invasion narratives of the late 1960s, the post-apocalyptic survivalist fantasies of the 1970s and 1980s, and the modern post-9/11 zombie—to track how certain musical sounds and styles are indexed with the content of zombie films. Two main musical threads link the individual films’ characterization of the zombie and the setting: Othering via different types of musical exoticism, and the use of sonic excess to pronounce sociophobic themes.
