  • Rome: a New Planning Strategy
a selected chapter from Rome: A New Planning Strategy by Franco Archibugi draft of a forthcoming book to be published by Gordon and Breach, New York an overview of this book CHAPTER 5: THE NEW STRATEGY FOR ROME 1. The "Catchment Areas" of the New "Urban Centres" 2. The Spatial Distribution of the Catchment Areas Table 2 - Catchment Areas of the Roman Metropolitan System (by thousands of inhabitants) 3. What decentralization of services for the new "urban centres"? 4. What "City Architecture"? 5. What Strategy for "Urban Greenery"? 6. Programmed Mobility 7. A "Metropolitan" Residentiality Notes References Further Reading THE NEW STRATEGY FOR ROME Authentic "polycentrism", therefore, is founded first of all on an evaluation of the "catchment areas" of the services that define it. The location of the centers and infrastructures of such services is a subsequent question (we would say "secondary" if with this adjective is meant not inferiority in importance, but rather a temporal and conceptual subordination). The polycentrism supported here in Rome means, first of all, a theoretical assignation of the potentiality of the catchment area of the Roman system to respective "units" of service that locationally assume the 1 role of realizing the objectives, reasserted by everybody numerous times of: integrating functions, improving accessibility, distances, traveling times, not exceeding the thresholds that have been indicated as "overloading". The locational problem of the new strategy therefore, is posed as a problem of not letting all the users participate in any function in any part of the system (the 2,8 million Roman citizens plus the by now recognized other 700 thousand citizens of the Roman "system"); but to functionally distribute the services in such a way as to not render "indifferent" (but on the contrary very..

Mammal fauna remains in the Middle Pleistocene volcanic deposits from Northeastern Sabatini Volcanic District area (Latium, Italy) G. Sottili, P. Celletti Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra, Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza”, Roma, Italy - [email protected], [email protected] SUMMARY: This paper describes mammal remains (Elephas antiquus, Bos primigenius, Cervus elaphus) contained in lahar deposits from the North-eastern Sabatini Volcanic District (SVD), which have been stud- ied from a volcanological and paleontological point of view. These deposits are characterised by a very dis- continuous thickness and crop out in a very small area. The stratigraphical relationship with the Tufo Rosso a Scorie Nere Auct. (450 ka) and with the Tufi Varicolori della Storta Auct. (410 ka) are based on Plinian pumice and scoria fall deposits which have been used as stratigraphic markers. 1. The aim of this paper is to examine the spatial distribution of socioeconomic inequalities in the municipal territories of Italy’s three most populous metropolitan cities, Roma, Milan and Napoli, by means of economic and social indicators and with data aggregated at the sub-municipal subdivisions of the cities and the municipalities in their provinces. These metropolitan areas are coming out of the worst crisis Italy has ever experienced, with a new class of poor people found not only in the outskirts and in the less well-off social groups but also among the middle class. Local and national governments cannot ignore this situation; the weakest sections of society have been unable to reap the benefits of the growth in the quaternary sector that has characterized Milan, Rome and Naples after the last decade, albeit to differing degrees.

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Monti Sabatini and Colli Albani: the dormant twin volcanoes at the gates of Rome F. Marra1 ✉ , C. Castellano1, L. Cucci1, F. Florindo1, M. Gaeta2, B. R. Jicha3, D. M. Palladino2, G. Sottili2, A. Tertulliani1 & C. Tolomei1 This multi-disciplinary work provides an updated assessment of possible future eruptive scenarios for the city of Rome. Seven new 40Ar/39Ar ages from selected products of the Monti Sabatini and Vulsini volcanic districts, along with a compilation of all the literature ages on the Colli Albani and Vico products, are used to reconstruct and compare the eruptive histories of the Monti Sabatini and Colli Albani over the last 900 ka, in order to defne their present state of activity. Petrographic analyses of the dated units characterize the crystal cargo, and Advanced-InSAR analysis highlights active deformation in the MS. We also review the historical and instrumental seismicity afecting this region. Based on the chronology of the most recent phases and the time elapsed between the last eruptions, we conclude that the waning/extinguishment of eruptive activity shifted progressively from NW to SE, from northern Latium toward the Neapolitan area, crossing the city of Rome. Although Monti Sabatini is unafected by the unrest indicators presently occurring at the Colli Albani, it should be regarded as a dormant volcanic district, as the time of 70 kyr elapsed since the last eruption is of the same order of the longest dormancies occurred in the past. Te city of Rome was founded upon tufaceous hills that are part of a thick pyroclastic plateau formed by the eruptions of two large volcanic districts: Monti Sabatini (MS) to the NW and Colli Albani (CA) to the SE (Fig.
