Southern Conference 702 N Pine St. Spartanburg, S.C. 29303 864-591-5100 NOTES AND NUMBERS • Conference play gets underway on Thursday, Jan. 10 as Western Carolina travels to Wofford for a 6 p.m. tip and UNCG faces Furman in Greenville at 7 p.m. The other four conference teams kick off play on Saturday, Jan. 10 as all eight schools are in action that day. • Amanda Thompson was the SoCon Player of the Week for the third consecutive week and the fourth time this season. ETSU’s Tianna Tarter was the last conference player to do both in 2016-17. • Furman’s Le’Jzae Davidson surpassed 1,000 career points, giving the SoCon four active players with 1,000 points or more. Davidson and redshirt-junior Chloe Wanink (Wofford) met the mark this season, while senior KeKe Callo- way (Mercer) and junior Nadine Soliman (UNCG) did it last season. • Wofford finished the fall semester undefeated at home (5-0) for the first time since the 1992-93 season, where Wofford also went 5-0 in the old Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Terriers downed Southern Wesleyan on Jan. 3 to run their home win streak to six (6-0) and are the only conference team undefeated at home. • Wofford downed Southern Wesleyan 110-47 in their most recent contest, the Terriers’ fourth game this season scoring 100-plus. It’s the first time a Wofford team has scored 100-plus four times in a season. • In Wofford’s win, Cairo Booker (20 points), Niyah Lutz (20 points) and Alexis Tomlin (11 points) all set new career highs. • In ETSU’s most recent contest, a 73-65 loss to High Point, Sadasia Tipps had five blocks, marking the first time since 2015 an ETSU player had five blocks in a game (Yamile Rodriguez vs. UNC Asheville). • ETSU sophomore guard Erica Haynes-Overton is second in the country in steals (70) and is third in steals per game (4.38). • Furman’s Celena Taborn is shooting 66.4% from the field, sixth nationally. • UNCG holds opponents to 23.1% from deep, good enough for eighth in all of Division I. • Furman is in the middle of a four game homestand. So far, they are 1-1 with a win over Presbyterian and a loss to North Greenville. • ETSU (0-8) and UNCG (0-7) are winless on the road.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK Amanda Thompson - Mercer - Forward

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer forward Amanda Thompson has been named the play- er of the week for games played Dec. 31 to Jan. 7. The award is selected by the league office.

Thompson’s nod is her third consecutive and fourth of the season. The preseason all-conference selection and December player of the month is the first player to win Southern Conference player of the week in three straight weeks since ETSU’s Tianna Tarter did it in 2016. Tarter is also the last SoCon player to win the award four times in a single season.

The senior earned her fourth consecutive double-double, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds in a 71- 66 setback at Jacksonville on Jan. 2. Despite a four-point loss to Columbia four days later in Mercer’s non- conference finale, the native of Hayesville, North Carolina, tallied her fifth straight double-double, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. On the week, she shot 51.6% from the floor and also averaged 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

Thompson leads the conference in rebounding (9.1 per game) and offensive rebounds (3.8 per game) and is second in steals (2.3 per game). Additionally, she is in the top 10 in scoring, percentage, defen- sive rebounds and minutes played. Thompson and the Bears (8-7) begin conference play on Jan.12, hosting Samford at 2 p.m.

Also nominated: Le’Jzae Davidson (Furman), Aja Boyd (UNCG) and Niyah Lutz (Wofford). soconsports.com Facebook.com/SouthernConference @soconsports Instagram.com/SouthernConference #SoConHoops 2019 CHAMPIONSHIP & 2017-18 IN REVIEW PLAYERS OF THE WEEK 2019 Women’s Basketball Championship Date Name Pos.
