The Journal of Interreligious Studies Issue 23, May 2018| http://www.irstudies.org From the Managing Editor Occasionally, the Journal of Interreligious Studies invites a guest editor to create a special issue on a theme of urgent import either in academia or to the public, or both. I am delighted to have worked with Funlayo E. Wood, PhD, a scholar at the intersection of the Study of Religion and African and African American Studies, in bringing forth this special issue. Funlayo researches Yoruba religious concepts and practices and philosophical, theological, and semiotic aspects of the Ifá-Òrìsà tradition as manifested on both sides of the Atlantic. She is also the founding director of the African and Diasporic Religious Studies Association. In addition to her academic work, and in keeping with the mission of the JIRS to bridge the gap between academia and (inter)religious communities, Funlayo is also a practitioner, serving as an Òrìsà priestess and spiritual counselor. Funlayo invited scholars and practitioners to pen articles for this issue, which is entitled “The Color of God: Race, Faith, and Interreligious Dialogue.” In her introduction to the issue, Funlayo frames these articles within the history of Christian interaction with, and scholarly analysis of, non-Christian religious traditions. The nefarious effects of this exclusivist, expansionist, colonial, Orientalist, and violent history of subjugation and enslavement perdures in academic, public, and socio-political discourse today; these effects sustain an asymmetrical relationship of power in which non-Western and non-Christian intellectual and spiritual practices and traditions remain subordinated to Western, Christian—and white—religio-cultural discourse. Funlayo notes that the racial-religious hierarchy continues to exist today, and that this has ongoing detrimental effects on people of color and their religious communities. In her opening piece, Funlayo introduces this issue and all of the articles with a clear, cogent, and concise history of the codification and conflation of race and religion. I only wish to add that interreligious discourse has yet to extricate itself wholly from the inherited ideology of white, Christian supremacy. Publications such as this one are far from sufficient, but they do transform the discourse, and this transformation can have positive effects on the social imaginaries of both the public and academia. As a reminder, a social imaginary is “the creative and symbolic dimension of the social world, the dimension through which human beings create their ways of living together and their ways of representing their collective life.”1 Social imaginaries produce ideologies that serve in “altering, undermining or reinforcing our relations with others and with the world.”2 An ideology is not merely a collection of invisible ideas without material, physical, and economic impact on the lives of human bodies; it is not “a pale image of the social world,” but “a creative and constitutive element of our social lives.”3 Ideology, and thus discourse, produce material, physical, and economic effects in the visible world, in local and global communities, and in society, politics, and culture. It is my humble hope that publications such as this one play a small part in subverting the hegemony of white, Christian discourse both in the field of interreligious 1 John B. Wood Guest Editor Race and religion have been strange bedfellows since the beginning of contact between diverse peoples. While religion is culturally and racially bound, with each group of people traditionally having its own way of conceptualizing and worshiping the Divine, the post- Enlightenment tendency to theorize religion as an unbounded sui generis entity has frequently denied these boundaries—this despite the fact that racism and theories of racial difference have historically been expressed in distinctly religious terms. We speak today with musician, activist, author, and band leader Daryl Davis, a Black man who spent well over 30 years speaking with and, at times, befriending white supremacists. RICHARD: We hear from Daryl about his extraordinary quest and strategy to improve race relations and find common ground. Welcome to Let's Find Common Ground, Daryl. DARYL: Thank you. Thank you both very much for having me. ASHLEY: Daryl, before we hear this story, we're doing this interview at a time of national despair and deep anger over racial injustice. What's your response to the killing of George Floyd in police custody and to everything that's happened since? DARYL: Well, one, a lot of anger, a lot of frustration that must be channeled into communication and dialogue, not police training as everybody wants to say. Training has nothing to do with it. When you're out there selecting a particular group of people, in this case Black people, and you're not treating white people the same way, it has nothing to do with training. It has to do with humanity. ASHLEY: You emphatically said training is not the answer. What's an alternative? DARYL: An alternative is having regular meetings with your community explaining police procedure, listening to your community about their concerns and their fears of the police.

    The Journal of Interreligious Studies Issue 23, May 2018| http://www.irstudies.org Oyinbo Ọmọ Aṣogun Dere: An Analysis of Racial Injustice, Gun Violence, and Sexual Assault in America through a Traditional Yoruba Religious Perspective Ayodeji Ogunnaike With all of the violence and death that occurred in America in the summer of 2016, it seems that the discussion of the issues surrounding these and similar events has failed to lead us out of the current predicament. By analyzing the myths, rituals, and traditions of the Yoruba deity Ogun, this paper seeks to provide an indigenous Yoruba perspective on the current issues of violence, death, social isolation, social inequality, and sexual assault and harassment in American society and institutions of higher learning. With American society’s emphasis on progress, hard work, technology, and force in the form of guns and military might, it argues that we are living in an “Age of Ogun,” but will need to learn to interact with him properly in order to resolve these terrifying and related issues. It was a British colony which was amalgamated in 1914. The country became independent in 1962 and was right away bedeviled by military coups d’états and a bloody civil war (1967-1970). In 1999, the country experienced democratic dispensation. In the 1990s, the Nollywood nascent movie industry—following in the footpath of Hollywood and Bollywood—flourished. The movie industry grew thanks to four factors: Rapid urbanization; the hand-held video camera; the advent of satellite TV; and, the overseas migrations of Nigerians. Local languages are used in these films; however, English is the most prominent, along with Nigerian pidgin broken English. Many themes are treated in these films: tradition and customs, religion, witchcraft and sorcery, satire, urban and rural lives, wealth acquisition, consumerism, etc. I discuss the ways in which American popular culture is adopted in Nigeria and recreated on screen.

The Rotary Foundation has six priority areas: (1) Promoting peace; (2) Fighting disease; (3) Providing clean water; (4) Saving mothers and children; (5) Supporting education; and (6) Growing local economies. It has been argued by staff at Rotary International (RI) that long with promoting peace, “sustainability” is another cross-cutting priority that connects with all the others.   • Listening to Ourselves
    Introduction What lies within the pages of this book is a revolutionary moment in African philosophy: the first multilingual collection of African philosophy in indigenous African languages. The seven essays collected here are in six different languages from five different countries. Each has been translated into English by a scholar or scholars who are native speakers of the essay’s tongue; the translations are included here on facing pages. In this introduction, I will first contextualize this achievement and then introduce and discuss the anthology’s contents. In Moving the Centre, Kenyan writer Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o argues that there have been three types of literary traditions in Africa. The first is oral literature (or “orature”).1 The songs, poems, drama, proverbs, riddles, and sayings that constitute this tradition represent a rich and ancient heritage. The tradition is also a living one: through it, Ngũgĩ claims, African languages have been kept alive “in their most magical form.”2 The second tradition is that of Africans writing in European languages (generally the languages of their now former colonizers). Though he does not announce this in the present context, Ngũgĩ is extremely important to the development of this tradition: his first novel, Weep Not Child (1964), published under the name James Ngugi, was the first novel in English by an East African. Since then, however, Ngũgĩ has undergone one of the most remarkable transformations in modern literature: by the 1980s, he renounced English as a language for creative writing and vowed to publish all such work in an African language, particularly Gĩkũyũ (the language of his people).
