SERIES RECORD: The Eagles have won two in a row, including last year’s 37-28 victory at Greene Stadium. The two schools have met 18 times and Howard lead the series, 9-8-1.

THE COACHES: Howard University is coached by Gary “Flea” Harrell (Howard, ’94), who is in his third year and has a 13-14 record to date. NCCU is coached by Jerry Mack (Arkansas State, ‘03 ), who is in his first season there.

NEXT UP: Howard travels to Daytona Beach, FL to take on the Wildcats of Bethune Cookman in a 4 pm kickoff while NCCU travels to Orangeburg, SC to take on the Bulldogs of South Carolina State at 4 pm.

STATISTICAL LEADERS NC Central: Rushing: Andre Clark, 60 carries, 202 yards, 5 TDs Passing: Malcolm Bell, 51 of 79 passing, 604 yards, 3 TDs Receiving: Adrian Wilkins, 19 receptions, 196 yards, TD Tackles: C.J. Moore, 34 tackles, 1.5 for losses, 2 fumble recoveries

Howard University: Rushing: Greg McGhee, 72 carries, 363 yards, 8 TDs Passing: Greg McGhee: 78 of 164, 851 yards, 3 TDs Receiving: Matt Colvin, 17 receptions, 297 yards Tackles: Devin Rollins, 51 tackles, 3.0 for losses, a sack

PRODUCTIVE CAREER: McGhee is one of only a few FCS who has over 2,000 yards rushing and over 6,000 passing. The native of Pittsburgh, Pa is closing in on the MEAC and school record, held by Ted White of 9,846 yards of total offense for a career. He needs 118 to surpass Bernard Hawk of Bethune Cookman for second place and 1700 to surpass White.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES: NCCU is led offensively by Malcolm Bell, running back Andre Clark and speedy wide receiver Adrian Wilkins. Defensively, the Eagles rely on C.J. Moore, who is tied for 5th in the MEAC in tackles and has 3 fumble recoveries. NCCU is one of the top teams in the FCS in returns, ranking second in the nation in punt returns with a whopping 27.3 yard per return. Wilkins, a preseason all-MEAC and All American, ranks 5th in the conference in kick returns. Game Day

BISON HOOVES: McGhee ranks second in the MEAC in total offense and in passing and tied for fifth in rushing. Matt Colvin is third in receiving yards per game in the MEAC and William Parker is 3rd in kick returns.

SEASON SURPRISE: Devin Rollins is having an all-conference season. The junior middle linebacker from Miami, FL leads the MEAC in tackles with 51, 3 for losses and a sack. Khari Brown is also having a fine season, second on the team in tackles with 37, two for losses and a sack.

TURNOVER FACTOR: The Bison have recovered 5 fumbles, but have just one in five games.

SLOW STARTS: The Bison have been outscored, 72-28 in the first quarter this season and 104-51 in the first half. They have fared better in the second half, holding a 31-21 advantage in the fourth quarter.

CUMULATIVE EFFECT: Howard has been plagued all season by dropped passes. Last season, the Bison ranked among the nation’s best on third down conversions at 47 percent. But the dropped passes have helped lower the percentage to 31 percent through five games.

MEAC Rankings Howard NCCU Punting 1st Punt Returns average 1st First Downs 2nd Kick coverage 1st Fourth Down Conversion 2nd Third Down Conv. Def 1st 2nd Red Zone Passing Offense 2nd Scoring Offense 3rd Third Down Conversions Defense 3rd Passing offense 3rd Red Zone defense 1st

PRESEASON HONORS: Greg McGhee is coming off his best season in a Howard uniform, accounting for over 3,000 yards of total offense en route to being named the 2013 MEAC Player of the Year and the 2014 Preseason Player as well. Anthony Philyaw burst on the scene in 2013 after starting the season third on the depth chart and had an outstanding freshman campaign with over 700 yards rushing and 15 TDs. He is a preseason All-MEAC selection. Cameron Alston, who missed the 2012 season due to an injury, rebounded nicely, leading the team in tackles and . He is also a preseason All-MEAC pick, Toree Boyd was yet another freshman who turned heads, starting all 12 games at right offensive tackle and helping the Bison gain over 400 yards per game on total offense. He is a preseason All-MEAC pick.

GETTING BETTER: The Howard offensive line was one of the big question marks going into the 2013 season. There was one starter returning, senior All-MEAC selection Joshua Matthews and he was moved from guard to center. Moreover, there was a new offensive line coach in Manny Martinez. By the season’s end, the question mark became a punctuation mark under the development of Martinez as the team won five of its last six, scoring over 40 points in three of the games and leading the conference in total offense with over 400 yards per game. Despite a rash of injuries injuries, the Bison front picked up where it left off the past four games, averaging almost 400 yards of total offense.

OFF TO A FINE START: After having his best season in 2013, John Fleck was determined to come back even stronger in 2014. The 6-2 junior from Indianapolis, IN worked heavily on leg strength and it has paid off. He averages almost 43 yards per punt on the season. Fleck numbers stick out: Ten of his 29 attempts have been fair caught; seven have landed inside the 20-yard line and seven have been for 50 yards or more, including a career-best 64 yarder against Morehouse. His booming kickoffs deep in the end zone has resulted in five touchbacks. He was named the MEAC Special Teams Player of the Week following the Rutgers game.

A FIRST: When the Bison opened the season at Akron and at Rutgers, it marked the first time that Howard has played back-to-back FBS opponents to Game Day

MR. VERSATILITY: Richard Aiyegoro is one of the more versatile players on the squad. The 5-7 senior plays the slot posi- tion on offense, returns kickoffs and punts and he is the holder on field goals and PATs.

COACHING KINSHIP: Head Coach Harrell, offensive coordinator Ted White, special teams’ coordinator Bobby Jones and tight ends coach Jimmie Johnson all played at Howard. Rayford Petty the defensive coordinator, has twice been head coach for the Bison. Ronald Bolton, the secondary coach, is in his second tenure with the Bison.

THE VALUE OF LEADERSHIP: While McGhee’s exploits on the playing field are well documented, the senior QB is equally impressive in the classroom where he has a 3.2 GPA and has a member of the MEAC Commissioner’s All Academic team for the past two years, and in the community where he is a candidate for the AFCA’s Good Works Award for FCS players. McGhee will graduate this December.

INJURY REPORT: Starting strong safety Julien David injured his foot in the Rutgers game and is out for the season following surgery. Deonta Allen Wright injured his knee against Rutgers and is also out.
