Specifically: In Sept. 23, 1918, while the roads leading from the St. Marie Farm to beyond the Vilcey-sur-Trey hill were wet and slippery and under heavy fire, each ambulance was required to make four trips each way during the night, avoiding shell holes or stopping to fill them and from time to time pausing to await the lifting of a barrage and then push forward during the lull; again, on Sept. 28, 1918, on the occasion of the heavy action on front line, most of the casualties were evacuated from the advanced aid station of the ,358th Infantry, located near Les Huit Chemins in the Bois des Rappes, and all roads leading to this station were under heavy artillery fire and direct observation for a large portion of the distance. Later, this company was on active service in the Meuse-Argonne front from Oct. 22, to Nov. 11, 1918, and distinguished itself by its enterprise and fearlessness in removing patients from battalion aid stations, sometimes within three hundred yards of the enemy lines and under his direct observation.
