News and reviews RWA President’s Appeal by E Horwill I am very honoured to have been elected your President for 2014.

We are now in the post-olympic period. This was always going to be a challenging time following the anticipation and excitement of London 2012. This has been compounded by the disappointment of the absence of Race Walking from the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The cost of organising events has greatly increased and is now beyond the reach of many would be promoters. At the same time, funding has been severely reduced.

In making the traditional President’s Appeal, I hope that you will be able to give generously, but all donations, however small will be greatly appreciated. Through the RWA all your donations will be allocated to the general development and promotion of Race Walking.

Please make your cheques payable to the ‘RWA’ and send to my home address, or hand to me when we meet at race or administration meetings.

I take this opportunity of thanking you for your help and support and wish you and your club a successful year’s Race Walking. Bob Wright Handicap Series Race 6: 3,000 metres track: Osmond Priaulx, Footes Lane, Guernsey by R Elliott Winner sets new best time

Karen Farman walked to a deserved win as she overtook those starting in front of her and easily holding off those behind her as she raced to a new personal best time of 21.04. Second walker home Rob Elliott moved in to that position in the final 100 metres when passing the eventual joint third placed walkers Sarah Wright and Joanne Le Prevost. His watch time of 22.50 being 16 seconds slower than the winners.

Last man to start Jason Le Noury had the fastest time of the day with a 14.25 clocking ahead of brother Stuarts 14.57. Times were not helped by the wet and windy conditions. With one race to go in the Bob Wright Series and taking the two races that walkers can discard for scoring into consideration, then the title is still up for grabs. The best chances of success should go to Mick Le Sauvage, Jason Le Noury and the improving Karen Farman.

Inaugural England Athletics Indoor Championship ; Sunday 5 January 2014 By S Dooley “…These are very exciting days for our sport. This year has already seen our first national champions crowned. For the first time ever, indoor race walking titles were also contested alongside our Senior and Under 20 Combined Events Indoor Championships. We are constantly working to improve opportunities available to our athletes and are conscious of the importance of these events in building the aspirations of youngsters and developing athletes…” Not my words, but the opening words of England Athletics CEO Chris Jones regular update, published after the event in Sheffield. And the Race Walking certainly justified the decision of Andy Day, ( England Athletics Head of Competition) to hold the National Indoor Championship as part of the Winter series of Race Walks.

First up was the 1000m. Ana Garcia, one of four girls competing in their home town, raced to the front, with team mate Alana Zeidler trying to stay within reaching distance. The two quickly broke the rest of the field and Ana’s quality showed as she drew away finishing over 100m ahead. Behind the front two was a close contest with Laura Achurch ahead of the other two Sheffield girls, and Pagen Spooner, competing in her first event. With 300m laps to go, Pagen took the front of the pack and gradually eased home ahead of the others.

The Men’s 3000m was set alight by the blistering pace of New Zealander Quentin Rew. Rew had in mind an attempt on the British all-comers record, and as he metronomically put in 45 second laps, it would seem that it was a real possibility. His final time of 11.17.66 missed Robert Heffernan’s record - set in Northern Ireland - but did set a National record for New Zealand. First Englishman home was Tom Bosworth, sandwiched between another Commonwealth walker - Creighton Connolly. Leading junior Cameron Corbishley again went under 13 minutes, helping himself to a new PB of 12:49.05

Ellie Dooley was the clear winner of the Women’s 3000m. Her time (14:01.79) slower than the PB she set in Cardiff three weeks earlier, but here she had to lead the race out. There was no repeat of the close finish that Emma Achurch and Jasmine Nicholls had served up at that earlier race in Cardiff. This time Achurch led out the athletes chasing Dooley, with Nicholls in the role of pursuer. The older of the two Leicester walkers managed to overhaul Achurch, as did Hyde Park Harrier Alana Barber who steadily worked her way through the field to take third place.

Merited awards by D Ainsworth In a glittering Presentation Evening at King's Lynn Corn Exchange, Centurion CATH DUHIG received the "West Norfolk Senior Sportsperson-of-the-Year Award" for excellent performances throughout 2013. Cath received a number of sporting awards in her locality...and rightly so! Another glittering evening, in the presence of His Worshipful the Mayor of Colchester at The Weston Homes Community Centre (Colchester United's home ground), saw MARGARET WILLIAMS of Colchester Harriers presented with the ERIC CHAPMAN AWARD for "Meritorious Long Service to Sport by a Volunteer" at Colchester's Annual awards. Margaret is the wife of Essex Police race walker LANCE...and both are well known to the walking world as leading lights at those successful 100 Miles races we've staged around the town's Lower Castle Park. We applaud both ladies on their recognition. RIP Cliff Royle by C Flint It with great sadness that we pass on the news that Cliff Royle C.148 died peacefully aged 91 at home last Thursday, and we all send our deepest condolences to Margaret, his wife for 62 years. Cliff qualified as a Centurion in the Yorkshire WC 24 hours track race at Bradford in 1949 in 21.41.23, and for many years has been our lowest numbered Centurion. He was a great character and at one of the recent Centurion dinners he played the ukulele and led a sing-a- long. He will be greatly missed. 2014 ERWL –Race 1 : 5 miles : LVAC – 18th January by R Wallwork The 2014 series got off to a cracking start with 48 walkers taking part over a four lap course in damp, but mild conditions. EHAC’s young star Callum Wilkinson set the pace closely followed by Fransisco Reis and Ian Richards. The latter was forced to give ground early on, but Reis, preparing for the forthcoming World Masters Indoor championships refused to let the leader go and dogged him most of the way, forcing Wilkinson to a pb by over two minutes.

There was a warm start-line reception for Helen Middleton and David Kates, who were returning after having breaks away from race waking. It was also good to see walking club walking stalwarts Ron Powell and his wife Mary, Bernie Hercock and Peter Emery on the roadside urging on all the competitors, but particularly those wearing ‘Red & Gold’.

In seventh place John Hall used the race to celebrate his 65th birthday and his family turned up to cheer him on. The next ERWL fixture is at QEII Playing Fields, Enfield EN1 3PL - start 1pm Chris Smith Race Walking League 2013/14: Round 2 – 19.11.2013 4 athletes clocked excellent sub 10 minute times for the 2km distance in round 2 of this popular race walking series.

In a repeat 1-2-3 result of the first race, Ana Garcia (Silverdale School, Sheffield) won her second successive league race ahead of Emma Achurch (Leysland H.S.) and Alana Zeidler (Silverdale School).

Matt Redfern (William Allitt, Swadlincote) took his first ever league victory ahead of Tim Snook (Farnham Heath End, Surrey) with Colin Zack (Woolmer Hill, Haslemere) taking the other podium position.

At the half way stage of this popular postal series, competition is really hotting up. In the girls league Ella Sharkey (Meadowhead) tops the chart closely followed by Emma Achurch, Ana Garcia, Molly Meleady-Handley (Mylnhurst School, Sheffield) and Alana Zeidler (Silverdale School, Sheffield).

Chris Smith Race Walking League 2013/14: Round 2 cont’d With another fine personal best performance Colin Zack (Woolmer Hill, Haslemere) maintained his lead at the top of the boys league ahead of Faris Alkhamesi (Sketchley Hill Primary, Leics ) and Stokes’ Marty Ross.

In the team category, the young Blaby Stokes Striders squad have knocked Farnham Heath End off the top spot. Sketchley Hill Primary have climbed into third place. Stokes “B” are fourth overall just a solitary point ahead of last year’s champions Silverdale School.

World Masters Indoor Championships – Budapest 25 to 30 March At the close of entries 3800 athletes from 70 countries have registered, including 313 walkers who will race 3000 metres indoors and 10km outdoors.

The UK will be represented by 14 men and 5 ladies. Although it is a small team by comparison with other nations it should punch well above its weight with 4 clear favourites for gold based on the best times declared. Noel Blatchford should win 2 golds bettering her silver and 2 bronzes in Brazil last autumn while Maureen Spelman should take gold in her only event, the 3000m. Arthur Thomson, now in the 75 to 79 age group, remains in a class of his own and should be a clear winner in both the 3000m and 10km. Ian Richards should similarly win two golds with his nearest competitor being John Hall who should collect silver in the 3000m but will have to fight to repeat it in the 10km. James Farrar in the 85-89 age category will be looking to take gold in the 10km and a possible bronze in the 3km. Ann Wheeler also has a good chance for gold in the 3000m being just 5 seconds behind the best ranked walker. In the 10km, however, a bronze looks more likely.

Eric Horwill, who won the European 3000m championships in San Sebastion last year, looks as though he might have to settle for silver this time while Colin Turner is in with a great chance of a bronze and silver in his 70 to 74 age group. Consistent performer in the UK, Francisco Reiss, competes in one of the toughest categories, 50 to 54, and will have to work hard in both his races. His best chance for a medal will be in the 3000m.

In the 10km team races we should win gold in the male 65 to 69 category with Peter Boszko and Roger Michel battling for the third team place to support Ian and John. There is a good chance for medals in other age categories but until we know what age groups are going to be combined we will not know what teams we will be able to make up.

If it goes as expected Steve Allen and Steve Uttley should be able to make up a team with Francisco. Arthur and Colin should be able to combine with Norbert Will, while in the ladies race Ann may be able to join with Judy Howard and Fiona Bishop but if that is not a possible combination, Ann and Judy could join with Noel.

Almost every UK walker could come home with a medal which would be a great achievement.

Taken from the IAAF Yearbook Volume 01 2013 Long Walk to Glory, Robert Heffernan Irishman Robert Heffernan ended his nation’s 30-year wait for a men’s World Champion when he walked to 50km gold in . It was the end of a long journey for him too, as he told Paul Warburton.

So there was Robbie Heffernan outside the bank in having just been told ‘no’ – he couldn’t have a £1500 loan to get to a training camp/

Back in 2002, it wasn’t the first setback for a walker who, despite all kinds of adversity, last August became the first Irishman since Eamon Coughlann 30 years before him to win an IAAF World Championship gold as he marched to victory in Moscow’s 50km Walk.

Heffernan can reel off a chapter of struggles before he made what he calls the ‘breakthrough’ in 2004. That was the moment he realized a talented athlete needed to become ‘professional’.

It’s the word the 35-year-old uses a lot – that and ‘massive’. It was massive when he realized he needed to do something about his preparation, and wrote to walks superstar for help. And it was just as massive when he left the four-time Olympic gold medallist and World champion in 2009 to kick his career on another notch.

He did so to huge effect sparking a response at home in Cork that has been bigger than massive. So intense is the attention that Heffernan has had to find new training routes so he can concentrate on what he does best.

He laughs when asked how many autographs, to the nearest 5,000, he’s signed since his walk of fame. “Yeah, I’m recognized everywhere at home – but in a positive way,” he admits. “You have to move on though, you can’t just sit on what you’ve done. People are great: they shout, wave and clap and you want to acknowledge them, but I need to focus on the next thing.”

It was this single-mindedness, this dogged belief that he was getting better all the time, that made him stick at it through all the years, from the days when he was just a cocky hopeful on the eve of the 1999 IAAF World Cup ticking off a list of all those he and his Irish team-mates were going to beat the next day.

A year later, after a brilliant lead-up to the 2000 Olympics, the first thing he did following a relatively disappointing 20km was to pick up a pen. Korzeniowski opened the letter and for four years Heffernan followed the great man all over Europe to see what it took to make a champion.

This was the Irish walker’s self-proclaimed ‘hippy’ phase, a time when he shared rooms and slept on floors, ‘piggy-backing’ off other walkers and physios, going to training camps, taking whatever could be scrounged to make progress – that and dealing with bank managers who said they weren’t going to give him a loan for anything as daft as race walking.

“I wrote to Robert in 2000 after the Olympics,” Heffernan explains. “I wasn’t happy, I had walked 2.31 for 35km in training, which is still faster that what I did in Moscow and at the London Olympics. A day later I walked 11.30 for 3km, and a week later I set another Irish record for 10km – and all in the space of six days.

Page 5 of 28 Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] February Race Walking Record 2014 In association with the Race Walking Association

Long Walk to Glory, Robert Heffernan cont’d “And then I went out to and walked just 86 minutes. If you looked at me objectively, you might say here’s someone with a massive talent – what’s going wrong?

“So it was about observing Robert for four years up to [the 2004 Olympics]. I trained really hard for it, but there was no proper professional structure and I got stress fractures and hernias and all kinds of things, but from 2004 I never looked back.”

THE NEARLY YEARS

That’s when things became more ‘professional’ with a programme that eventually took him to Moscow where Heffernan nosed ahead at 40km and widened the gap all the way to the line in Luzhniki Stadium. What used to be hit-and-miss in his early career had become as close to certainty as he could make it.

“Robert made it clear what was needed,” says Heffernan. “You didn’t get a pat on the back for turning up and training. There were specific goals to be met and we tried to work out how best to achieve those.”

What followed were a string of near-but-no-cigar races where Heffernan was always up for a prize – but never quite made it. Fifth place at the European Cup at Leamington Spa in 2007 was particularly gutting. Heffernan felt sure there was a bronze to be won that day around Victoria Park in the Warwickshire spa town, but a last 230mm inside 40 seconds by a Russian and a Belarussian relegated him to fifth.

It’s often said the worst place to finish at athletics competition is fourth, for all the obvious reasons. However, only one of Heffernan’s three such finishes rankles with the Irishman – the one from Metz at the next European Cup. His fourth place in the European Championships 20km was “a bit disappointing”, he says, but Heffernan was delighted to be fourth again in the 50km just days later as he broke yet another Irish record. His fourth in the London Olympics 50km was a personal best by a distance and, in fact, two seconds quicker than his winning time in Moscow.

“People talk about winning a medal as the most important thing, but if you can see you’re making progress that’s also important,” he says. “All that made me believe I was still on the right track.”

In between came that moment when Heffernan felt he needed to ditch the man who had guided him so far, the decision finally coming after he’d finished a distant 15th in the 2009 World Championship 20km.

The Irishman needed to do it his way, with like-minded people around him and in the right environment – and to that end there was no place like home.

“I needed to create my own set-up in Cork and at camps, and I walked away from Korzeniowski in 2009 – that was a massive jump to do something like that to him,” he says. “I was going to pack it in after Berlin, but decided to put a load of people around me because I always believed there was the chance of a genuine improvement if the resources were around me.

“You’re always evaluating, progressing, growing, and this was time when I need to do a bit more.”

THE WINNING TEAM Long Walk to Glory, Robert Heffernan cont’d Heffernan’s wife Marian was among the first to greet her ecstatic husband after he won in Moscow, and she is her husband’s day-to-day manger. Heffernan’s conditioning coach is Robbie Williams and his physio is Emma Gallivan, whose schedules have been tailored to suit her charge. Gallivan reckoned the walker was calmness itself before the gun at Moscow.

“He was chatting away, cracking jokes,” she says. “He puts everyone at ease around him. Rob was quiet, but he still put us all at ease. He is not one of those athletes you have to be careful what you say around him before a big race. You can act normal around him. He was the same as ever.

“We spent about 15 minutes mobilising the key areas just before he went into the call room. He was great, quietly confident.”

The race itself was the culmination of a year geared to performing in the Moscow 50km. In fact, it was probably a blessing in disguise when he pulled out of the Rio Maior IAAF Challenge walk in April with a chest infection.

He took a tumble in the European Cup 20km in Dudince in May to finish ninth, way outside his personal best of 1:19:22, but was focused and ready for Russia when it mattered. Now he admits the follower has become the Pied Piper.

His training group, searching for new routes around Cork, includes Brendan Boyce, who was 25th in Moscow, and Alex Wright, a Briton who, like Heffernan way back, has gone to learn at the feet of the new master.

“It’s the new generation, and Alex and Brendan are hopefully getting the advice and mentoring they need by watching me daily,” says Heffernan. “You take Alex, there’s no money as usual in walking, but he’s there coming over on the bus to try to improve. For me, it’s a way of putting something back as well as having a decent group.”

Now, it’s heads down again for the European Championships in Zurich next August, with a warm up 20km at the World Cup in Shanghai in May. And then there’ll be another two years build-up to Rio 2016 and his last Olympics.

After that, the man who will then be 38 reckons he is going to have a bit of fun and milk the longest encore known to athletics.

“What I would like is a last year or more where I can be a journeyman,” he says. “You know, having it a bit easier and maybe high-fiving a few people at races or whatever. Maybe the last race will be the [2017] World Championships in London – that would be a massive way to finish.”

Kindly transcribed by A Perry.

Taken from the IAAF Yearbook Volume 01 2013 THE TEAM BOSS, Q & A.:PATRICK MCGONAGLE; ATHLETICS IRELAND As senior team manager for Athletics Ireland in Moscow Patrick McGonagle had special reason to celebrate when ‘Robbie; Heffernan crossed the line, as he explained to Paul Warburton.

Where were you watching the race in Moscow? I was out on the road, and when it became obvious that barring a disaster Rob was going to win, I had to think on my feet and make sure there was a grand reception for him back in the stadium. I belted back, and rallied any Irish around as well as making sure I had his wife Marian with me.

At the end when he crossed the line, I made sure Marian got on the track to greet him – not an easy thing, I can tell you, in Moscow with all the security – but it was a great bit of PR for Robbie and Irish athletics.

What was the importance of Robbie’s win to Irish athletics bearing in mind only two athletes before had won World gold wearing the Irish green? That’s right: the wins by Eamonn [Coughlann, 5000m 1983] and Sonia [O’Sullivan 5000m 1995] were a way off. Robbie’s win was very, very significant because he had taken on the Russians, who were expected to win in their own backyard, and beaten them.

He’s now a household name in Ireland and its given everybody a boost back here. When you get 80,000 people at a Gaelic football match cheering a race walker, as they did at a half-time presentation, you know you have made an impact.

It’s a bit difficult to say in the short term whether this will see more Irish walkers, or even other athletes – but when you get the man in the street debating the rules of walking, you’ve got to think there are possibilities..

You go back a way with Robbie, I understand? He first came to my attention in an U23 match in 1999, and there’s been a lot of water under the bridge since then. But he’s the last man standing from a talented group, and is already something of a role model for the new generation leading up to Rio 2016.

I always knew he was a great lad and a deserved winner as Irish Athlete of the Year – but I’ve also discovered since his win that he handles himself well given all the publicity and attention. It’s great promotion for the sport of athletics.

It must have been particularly gratifying for you to witness the win in Moscow as you were the person who told him his mother had died just before the World Championships in Daegu? Absolutely. That was a trying moment, the sort of thing you can’t prepare for.

I got a call from back home and needed to get to him before anyone else did. I understood he had gone out for an afternoon stroll, and I was waiting for him at the gate to the village when he got back.

5 kilometres road walk, Delancey Park, Guernsey by R Elliott Easy win for Stuart Walkers were greeted with a dry and blustery day for the 5 kilometres walk at Delancey. Stuart Le Noury emerged as an easy winner in 27.16 ahead of Rob Elliott in 29.51. Third place went to Kevin Le Noury who finished almost a minute up on Peter Beckerleg in fourth. Mick Le Sauvage was an isolated fifth whilst the quickest woman Kay Coulson only just failed to catch Dave Dorey, closing down a big gap in the final section of the race. She finished ahead of Joanne Le Prevost and Karen Farman.

Bob Wright Handicap Series Race 7: 1 mile track: Footes Lane, Guernsey by R Elliott Karen Farman walks to Bob Wright Handicap win

Race winner Karen Farman finished a clear winner in the last walk in the Bob Wright Handicap series to take the overall series win and the Bob Wright Trophy. Mick Le Sauvage had led the series going in to the walk but could only manage 10th place and his chance had gone. Second over the line was Stuart Le Noury, seventeen seconds behind the winner. His time of 7.08 was the quickest of the day and moved him into third place in the series after two out of the seven race scores were discarded. But it was close with brother Jason also scoring the same points but losing out on positional countback. Jason also lost out to his brother with his actual time of 7.22. John Dedman took third place in the race. Race winner Farman had the fastest womens actual time with a 10.21 clocking, ahead of Jayne Le Noury on 11.13.
