Many readers will know of a series of books called The New Naturalist, which started in the late 1940s and is still running today with fresh volumes on many aspects of natural history and the countryside published every year. One of the early books was The Wren, followed, around 30 volumes later, by The Folklore of Birds. Both these books mystified me with their accounts of a strange, long-ago ceremony called ‘The hunting of the Wren’. On St Stephen’s Day, now known as Boxing Day, groups of boys set out after midnight on Christmas Day to search for a Wren in hedges and bushes and then chased it, beating the vegetation with sticks, until the poor bird died from exhaustion or a blow.
