4 ABOUT AGE UK Age Concern has been around for over 50 years as a federal movement of hundreds of autonomous local groups providing a range of services for older people. Age UK aims to improve the quality of life of older people and is the largest voluntary sector provider of direct services to them. In addition to its professional staff, Age UK relies upon the help of 250,000 volunteers in its work throughout the UK. Age Concern Malvern started in 1988 – and it continues to grow. In April 2010 we voted to become part of Age UK: an amalgamation of Age Concern and Help the Aged, as an independent organisation. We are now known as Age UK Malvern and District. We work closely with neighbouring Age UK offices, accessing some of their services, whilst directly providing others. More details of the various schemes are shown in this book under individual headings, but those of Age UK Malvern include central and rural information services, Visiting and Befriending, the Handyperson scheme, coffee mornings, Well Check, Happy Homes, Dementia Services, and Footcare services. We rely heavily on voluntary help and if you would like to join us we would be delighted to hear from you – call the office now! We have over 115 volunteers at the moment so you will not be lonely. 67 MALVERN and DISTRICT WELLCHECK SCHEME

Age UK Malvern and District was again successful in acquiring funding from Worcestershire Social Services Department through the formation of a consortium of all Worcestershire Age UK Offices to continue the ‘Wellcheck’ Service. The purpose of the Wellcheck scheme is to assist people who are just beginning to experience some difficulties at home, but do not yet qualify for an assessment from Social Services. It is available completely free to anyone over 50 years of age who lives in the Malvern District. The assessment includes: • Aids and Adaptations. • Benefit Check. • Carers Support. • Community and Interest Groups. • Domestic and Shopping Services. • Frozen Meals. • Foot Care • General Information and Advice. • Handyperson Scheme. • Visiting and Befriending. Once the referral is received, our Wellcheck officers will arrange to see you – usually in your own home – your needs will then be identified, discussed with you and put in place. Wellcheck will also contact you at six monthly intervals to see if you need further help. Please remember the idea of a Wellcheck assessment is to keep you safe and comfortable in your own home and improve your quality of life. For further information please call: 01684 560666
