Schools meet the challenge

1 May, 2012, 11:19 pm

LOCAL pupils from Narellan and Harrington Park came together as part of the Premier’s Sporting Challenge Leadership Program.

The year 5 and 6 pupils from Narellan Valle, Narellan and Harrington Park joined their high school peers from Elizabeth Macarthur to learn the skills required to take part in and coach a number of sports.

Development officers from softball, AFL, rugby union and rugby league joined program manager Noel Fitzgerald who had been travelling the state conducting similar sessions in more than 23 other schools.

The local schools are using the three-year funded project as part of the multi-faceted approach to transition.

A key element of the program is developing the leadership of year 7 and 8 students while laying the platform for the next generation of sports leaders.

The link between the four schools will continue as the year progresses with students from the high school referring at each of the upcoming PSSA gala days in addition to assisting each of the four schools with their athletics carnivals.

A number of other local schools from both Camden and Campbelltown have been selected to take part in the program.

Students from Robert Townson High School and Camden High School are also leading programs with their local primary school partners.

Olympic kayaker Jessica Fox, 17, and Australian netballer Susan Pratley speak at Chullora Public School.

OLYMPIC kayaker Jessica Fox and Australian netballer Susan Pratley brought healthy messages to Chullora Public School students on Wednesday.

Principal Mark Barraket said students were delighted to meet the athletes, who spoke about the importance of diet and exercise.

He said the school’s strong sporting culture meant pupils were very receptive to the program’s healthy lifestyle message.

“Our students are learning those skills - kicking, skipping, throwing balls - from very early on,” Mr Barraket said.

Inspiring a healthy interest in fitness

22 JUN 12 @ 12:01 AM BY MORGAN DOWNS

It was a star-studded affair at Smithfield Public School last Friday when Premier Barry O’Farrell and Australian athletes paid a visit. Mr O’Farrell launched the 2012 Premier’s Sporting Challenge and named Olympic medallist Geoff Huegill as chairman of the Premier’s Council for Active Living. They were joined at the launch by Australian netballer Susan Pratley, Olympian Craig Stevens, former NRL player Trent Barrett and dual Olympian Alexandra Croak. The sportspeople joined students for workshops and presented the school’s sporting captains with certificates at an assembly. During the assembly Mr O’Farrell spoke about the importance of sport and maintaining physical activity throughout life. He spoke of his own challenges in maintaining physical activity in the move from school to university. “It’s not just about health and exercise, it’s about all those other things that sport teaches you,” he said. Mr O’Farrell said it was “fantastic” to launch the challenge at Smithfield Public School. The school was chosen because it had taken part in the challenge since it was implemented five years ago. Huegill said he welcomed the opportunity to promote the value of living a balanced, active life. “Healthy communities are more connected and productive and there are far-reaching benefits, including the protective role against illnesses,” he said. Principal Mary Lambert said the visit was a great way to encourage the students to be active.

Students get a taste of Olympic ideals

By BELINDA-JANE DAVIS Oct 18,2012 4 am

Olympian Alexandra Croak has inspired Black Hill Public School students to realise every dream is possible.

The athlete dropped in to share her story and promote healthy living and the Premier’s Sporting Challenge on a three-day tour around the region.

She competed as a gymnast in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and then retired and took up diving where she competed in the Beijing Games.

“I really enjoy coming to schools who wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to see an Olympic ambassador,” Ms Croak said.

“I spoke to the kids about my story and how I came from a small town without a lot sporting opportunities and that shouldn’t be a reason you don’t succeed.”

Year 6 pupil Emily Wicks said Ms Croak was an inspiration and she now believed she could achive any dream.

“She’s incredible, we are star struck,” Emily said.

Principal Brian Adamthwaite was thankful Ms Croak took the time to visit the school.

“She is such a lovely person and so grounded,” he said

“It’s wonderful to see a positive role model for them talking about how anything is possible.”

Olympian sets healthy example

BY MICHELLE COOK Nov 6, 2012 4 am Oct 18,2012 4 am

ALEXANDRA Croak is more than qualified to talk to children about leading healthy and active lifestyles. The dual Olympian was in Orange yesterday in her role as an ambassador for the NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge. Croak has represented Australia in gymnastics and diving at the Olympic Games. She made her Olympic debut with the Australian women’s gymnastics team when she was 16. She won gold for Australia at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in the women’s team all-round event. After this she retired from gymnastics. In 2004 she took up diving and went on to win a silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in the 10m synchro with Melissa Wu. Two years later she become a dual Olympian when she went toe h Beijing Games. There she was a semi-finalist in the 10m platform. In 2010 she joined with Wu again to win gold in the 10m synchro at the Delhi Commonwealth Games. Croak was also third in the 10m platform. She missed out on a place in the Australian team for the London Olympics and is now taking a break from full-time training. “It’s been full-on for a really long time so it’s nice to not have to be training fulltime,” Croak said. The 28-year-old said she wasn’t talking about retirement. She also works with the Beacon Foundation which aims to help children achieve their potential. She was in Orange yesterday before visiting Corinella, west of Forbes, today and Bathurst tomorrow.

Students pick up ball

March 21, 2012 1:31 am

ELIZABETH Macarthur, Robert Townson and Camden high schools are about to expand their involvement in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge.

Now in its fourth year, the challenge is open to every public primary and high school in NSW.

The extended program is designed to create the next generation of sports leaders and administrators, while creating links between the primary and high school students.

The Premier’s Sporting Challenge leadership program involves students from years 5 to 10 initially being instructed on the finer details of coaching and running sporting sessions.

The students gradually move through the program to the point where they are capable of running sessions for younger students independently.

The program is rolling out across both rural and metropolitan regions statewide. The three local schools along with their partner primary schools start their efforts this week.

Development officers from rugby league, softball, rugby union and soccer will ensure students get the best advice.

More than 300 students will be involved in the program across Macarthur.
