School and Community In 1951, the citizens of Charlotte decided to build a college-style campus consisting of 13 buildings on 62 acres reflecting community support for excellence in public education. Buildings are centered around a quadrangle, commonly known as the "quad". Myers Park’s tree-lined campus is located in one of the Queen City’s most beautiful neighborhoods. Myers Park is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In the spring of 2009, Newsweek ranked Myers Park 43rd among America’s top 100 high schools. Our students continue to outpace the state and national SAT averages. Our 2009 SAT composite average (math, critical reading, and writing) was 1691, 182 points above the national average and 205 points above the average. Myers Park is one of the public high schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system. The 2009-2010 enrollment is over 2900 students, making Myers Park one of the largest high schools in North Carolina. In the graduating class of 2009, 95% went on to pursue their education after high school: 78% attended a four-year college or university, 17% went on to a community or technical colleges, and 5% joined the work force or military. Myers Park utilizes A-day/B-day, 4X4, and hybrid schedules where all students attend four, ninety-minute classes every day. The school mascot is the mustang. The school's official colors are kelly green and white.

18 CMS School Improvement Plan 2008-11 Myers Park High School The Student Body The composition of the student body has an international flavor with over 34 countries represented in the 2009-2010 school year population. Myers Park embraces a diverse student population that is 57% white, 24% black, 10% Latino, 7% Asian, and 2% other. Twenty-six percent of the student body receives free or reduced lunch.

The Faculty The faculty consists of one hundred and fifty-seven teachers, one principal, one International Baccalaureate Coordinator, four assistant principals, seven counselors, an instructional accountability facilitator, a vocational coordinator and one media specialist. The Student Support Services Department includes the following part-time staff members: psychologist: social worker, vocational rehabilitation counselor, EC Compliance Facilitator, substance abuse counselor, nurse, and speech therapist. Our faculty is qualified and experienced: all have at least a bachelors degree, 60 have a masters, 4 a doctorate, 14 a masters/in process, 28 a masters ad-on, 12 are National Board Certified, and 18 are currently pursuing National Board Certification.

Curriculum and Extra-Curricular Programs Each student is recognized as an individual with an array of interests, talents, and needs. Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Honors courses are offered in most academic areas. General courses and remedial instruction are also available. In addition, the curriculum provides broad vocational offerings, including College/University Tech Prep, an Occupational Diploma, apprenticeships, career intern programs, and the Occupational Course of Study for Exceptional Education students. Art, photography, chorus, theatre, orchestra, marching band, debate, journalism, culinary arts, and JROTC are strong components of Myers Park’s curriculum. Academic excellence, athletic development, community service, and creative pursuits come together to strengthen the whole student. Thirty-five special interest clubs are available to students. Myers Park supports 29 junior varsity and varsity sports for men and women. More than one-third of the student body participates in the athletic program. These complementary opportunities make Myers Park one of a kind. Myers Park students excel on several competitive teams; recent accomplishments include: HI-Q State Champions, Science Olympiad State Champion, Mock Trial, Oceanography Bowl, Odyssey of the Mind World Champions, Chess State Champions, Future Problems Solvers State Champions, American High School Math Competition winners, and JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction. In addition, Myers Park is nationally known for its debate program and won the 2008 and 2009 Wachovia Cups for best overall interscholastic athletic performance in North Carolina.

Class Rank/Grade Point Average § Credit is assigned on a yearly basis and quality points are assigned on the same basis. The year grade is counted twice for GPA purposes. (There are still a few semester courses. These grades are counted once.) § Quality points are assigned on the following scale: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0. One additional quality point is assigned to all Advanced, Honors, and IBMYP courses (except IBMYP Art, Drama, foreign languages and PE). All foreign 19 CMS School Improvement Plan 2008-11 Myers Park High School language classes receive an additional quality point after the second level.
