WORLD CLASS MULTISPORT IN TEMECULA VALLEY

For the third straight season Vail Lake Resort will host the XTERRA West Championship off-road and accompanying festival.

"With its huge base of athletes, passion for athletics, and pioneering accomplishments in the field of , Southern California is truly the home of multisport and it is great that we have found a venue here where the XTERRA Tribe can come together," said TEAM Unlimited President Janet Clark. "For so many reasons - the , the proximity to L.A. and San Diego, the camping - Vail Lake is becoming one of our greatest venues."

The main event features some of the world's finest athletes challenging Mother Nature, and each other, in a 1.5-kilometer swim, followed by a 30k and 10k run. The pros will be competing for fame and cash ($20,000 purse) while amateurs race for a berth into the XTERRA World Championship, and national recognition in the XTERRA USA Championship series.

The weekend schedule will include an XTERRA Duathlon (3k run, 15k mtb, 5k run), 5k walk to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fourdation, 5k and 10k trail runs, free XTERRA University clinics, an outdoor expo with music and demos, and the XTERRA Kids Zone with free and bike races for kids.

The XTERRA Kids Zone on Saturday is a daylong schedule of events providing youngsters with the chance to participate like their parents in a positive and fun environment. Camp activities include the Shimano Youth Series bike race, Kids , skills riding course, cargo climbing net, balance beam, and soccer style penalty-kick shootout. Entry is free and all participants receive fun prizes and awards!

More than just a race, the XTERRA West Championship is filled with festivities for the entire family.

THE EXPO

For one weekend only down at the shores of Vail Lake the lively world of XTERRA gathers for a celebration of sport, healthy living, and good times. Come down and jump around to the beat of music, smell of bbq, and sight of great racing action. Visitors can get a profes- sional haircut from the best Paul Mitchell stylists in California, keep it cool in the Pacifico Beer Garden, style-up with XTERRA Gear apparel, and stay fueled with the latest in GU Energy Gel formulas. It's a weekend festival specifically designed to get you out and active. The Expo is open from 9am-to-4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Founded to help physically challenged athletes reach their athletic goals, the non-profit Challenged Athletes Foundation is the official charity of the Paul Mitchell Cut-a-thon at each stop on the XTERRA US Champioinship Series. Stylists will cut hair from 10am-2pm on Sunday.

Forget boring old road runs that conquer miles and miles of concrete and asphalt, the XTERRA Vail Lake Trail Run is a "mud in your eye, don't twist your ankle on that rock" kind of run. Get dirty, and deal with the elements Mother Nature dishes out. There are spots on this course where there isn't even a trail, just a red arrow half-mile away telling you where to go. It's up to you to pick your route, and the fun is in choosing which way to go. These are, in fact, the same 5k and 10k paths that Sunday's XTER- RA competitors will tackle on their way to the finish line. Get to know Temecula Valley in a whole new way - all while breath- ing in some fresh air and exercising your way to the start of a great day. Awards go to the top three in each age group and the 10k women's winner earns roundtrip airfare to Hawaii from Hawaiian Airlines. Wahine holo nui! XTERRA DUATHLON

Some guys and gals just don't swim and if you're one of them, this race is for you. Competitors will start with a 3k (1.9 mile) off-road trail run, follow with a 15k (9.3 mile) mountain bike, and finish up with a 5k (3.1 mile) trail run. It's open to athletes of all ages and skill levels, and you can even race it as a two-or-three person relay team. The rugged off-road trails are identical to those being used for the main event. The mountain bike course offers plenty of challenge, with leg-burning climbs and twisting, technical downhills. The reward for your work on the ascents is the panoramic views of Temecula Valley at each peak, and the exhilarating rides back down. 9 OFF-RROAD SPORTS FESTIVAL XTERRA UNIVERSITY Presented by Paul Mitchell

Learn the art of XTERRA from the best off-road multisport athletes on the planet. XTERRA U is a must for first- timers and anyone looking to sharpen their skills in , mountain biking, , and nutrition. RELAY TEAM CHALLENGE

Athletes now have more incentive than ever to forge together units of two or three people and challenge XTERRA as a team in either the sport or championship race. The top three teams in each relay division will get invited to race for the national team championship at Lake Tahoe (Sept. 29), GU is giving away generous heaps of swags to participants, and entry fees were slashed dramatically for teams this year. This is the best way to get started in XTERRA, and the crew will even help pair up individuals, so if you need a team- mate to complete a relay squad, simply send an e-mail to [email protected]. Jumping into a full-distance XTERRA the first time out can be intimidating – that’s why organizers created the XTERRA Sport race. The sport competition uses the same course, but cuts each discipline in half. This race is ideal for newcomers, offer- ing a great introduction to the rigors of XTERRA.

11 THE TEMECULA COURSE

The swim is in Vail Lake, an 800-acre private lake in Temecula Valley. The water is expected to be somewhere in the mid- to-high 60's. Championship racers swim one 1,500-meter lap (750 meters for Sport competitors). From the lake participants have about 100 yard little uphill jog to the swim-to-bike transition (T1). The 30-kilometer mountain bike course (15k Sport) offers a variety of terrain challenges and lots of rolling hills with rocks and boulders and soft dirt or mud depending on the weather. There are quite a few climbs, each offering magnificent views of the Valley from the top, followed by quick descents on twisting single track. The bike-to-run transition is back at the lake, giving friends and family the chance to cheer. Like the bike course, the 10k trail run (5k Sport) heads up and down several rolling hills. There are wide open sections and sections that run through dense trees. The finish line is back where it all started, down by the lake.

14 PROS TO WATCH Some of the world’s best triathletes, mountain bikers, trail runners, and adventure racers collide in the consummate individual challenge for outdoor athletes. As this is the first major race of the XTERRA U.S. Series, there is no telling how the competition will unfold. Off-season training - or lack thereof - could make a huge difference on this day. And as always with XTERRA - where Mother Nature is your toughest competitor - anything can and usually does happen. All qualifications aside, here are those most likely to walk away winners in California:

MEN’S FAVORITES WEALING Seth Wealing shocked the XTERRA Planet last year when he won the USA Championship race and the U.S. Pro Series - becoming the first American to ever accomplish that feat. He backed it up with a third place finish (top American) at the XTERRA World Championship. AND last year he was the runner-up to Brent McMahon at Temecula. Add it all up and Wealing comes into the first one as the man to beat. That said, Conrad “the Caveman” Stoltz has healed from injuries suffered during a pre-ride crash in Tahoe last year and is on a mission to reclaim his status as the King of XTERRA. The two-time Olympian and XTERRA World Champion won in Temecula back in 2005 and showed he’s in good form by winning the XTERRA South Africa title on April 14. Josiah Middaugh finished strong last year with a 4th place finish in Maui STOLTZ and he was third in Temecula a year ago. Greg Krause was 7th at XTERRA Worlds and is poised to break out. Mike Vine and Brian Smith are both peddle-to-the-medal mountain bikers that could potentially destroy this hilly course. Don’t count out Andrew Noble, who finished in the top five at all six U.S. Series races last season, and was 5th here last season. Making his continental U.S. debut is the XTERA Amateur World Champ Rom Akerson from Costa Rica, who will be riding in his first race as a pro.

WOMEN FAVORITES It appears we have another wonderful season of the McQuaid-Whitmore rivalry on the horizon. McQuaid holds the upper-hand by winning the USA race, U.S. Series, and the World Championship (for the third time) last season. Whitmore, the all-time winningest MCQUAID XTERRA athlete with 32 race wins under her belt, won here in Temecula last year (but McQuaid was victorious in SoCal in 2005). Over the last few years Candy Angle has placed third behind those two more times than she’d care to remember (including last year). Jennifer Smith had a breakout race at the USA Championship where she finished 2nd. Smith was 4th here last year. Heather Fuhr is one of the most recognizable names in multisport with a ton of Ironman victories, including the 1997 World Championship. Fuhr also won the Hawaiian Airlines Double twice for turning in the fastest combined times in the Ironman World Championship and XTERRA World Championship (the two races are just eight days apart). Amber Monforte embarks on her second year as a pro while Dara Marks Marino turns from pro mountain biking to XTERRA with this being her first-ever championship race. WHITMORE 15 MEET THE PROS

30 XTERRA AMERICA TOUR SERIES The XTERRA America Tour is designed to provide age group athletes with a bona-fide championship to compete for within their geographic region. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are invited to compete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship in Nevada on September 30. This year there are 50 races in 32 states across the country, as well as the U.S. Territories of Guam and Saipan. It marks the 11th straight year of expansion for the sport of XTERRA.

Here's how the Series works: 1) There are eight regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race:

NORTH EAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York. MID ATLANTIC (MA) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C. SOUTH EAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands NORTH CENTRAL (NC) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky. SOUTH CENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas. MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming. NORTH WEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska. SOUTH WEST (SW) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Marianas Islands, Pacific Territories.

2) Age Group: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on December 31, 2007. Athletes compete in the following age categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+ (w), 60-64 (m), 65+ (m), and new for 2006 is the Challenged Athletes Division (which is not broken down by age group, simply gender).

3) Series competitors race for points at their choice of 50 events - including XTERRA Points Series (XPS) races & XTERRA Championship Series (XCS) races. Competitors are required to race and count points in at least one event in his/her region. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like, however, they count just their best three finishes.

4) Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. If you race at more than one XTERRA Championship event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at the same rate as the XTERRA Points Series races. There are two points systems:

5) The highest points scorers in each region are invited to compete for a national title at the XTERRA USA Championship in Nevada (qualifying spots based on chart below). The competitor with the most points in their age group in each XTERRA Region earns the title of XTERRA Regional Champion, and wins a custom racing jersey.

Reigning XTERRA World Champion Nicolas Lebrun won his first XTERRA European Tour title by winning races in Italy, Czech, and Denmark, and finishing 2nd in France and third in Germany. On the women’s side Renata Bucher dominated the Tour with victories in France, Italy, Czech, Spain, and the UK. - We make champions. In the U.S. series alone we recognize 184 amateur regional champions and 22 amateur national champions, plus relay team national champions.

- We get kids involved wherever we go with the XTERRA Kids Zone. It's a free schedule of events with running and bike races, obstacle courses, and other fun games. The notion is to get kids outdoors and active.

- We've opened the doors for runners, not just multisport athletes, with the XTERRA Trail Run Series. This year there are more than 30 5k and 10k fun runs reaching into 18 major metropolitan cities in America - providing more chances to participate in the healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle.

- We took the XTERRA format into the snow with the creation of the XTERRA Winter World Championship to be held at Snowbasin Resort and Ogden, Utah on March 8-9, 2008.

- We launced the XTERRA Green Team to protect and preserve the areas we race in, and give back to the communities that host us.

TEAM Unlimited is a Hawaii-based television events and marketing company, founded in 1988. It owns and produces XTERRA, and in 2007 more than 100 events will be held in 16 countries. It all started with 123 competitors one afternoon in Maui, and has since evolved into the most prestigious off-road multisport race in the world. There are now more than 20,000 competitors, ages 13-70, from all 50 states and more than 40 countries.

XTERRA THROUGH TIME 1996: Jimmy Riccitello and Michellie Jones win inaugural event in Wailea, Maui. 1997: XTERRA adds two events in California, and one in Louisiana in addition to World Championship. 1998: The XTERRA tour goes to Michigan, Colorado, Oregon, and back to Louisiana. 1999: 11 races spanning from California to New Jersey. First year of Pro Points Series. 2000: XTERRA goes global with its first international races in England, Japan, and Canada. 2001: The first year of the Nissan Xterra USA Championship Series, Australia and the Netherlands. 2002: The inaugural XTERRA Saipan Championship, and races in Germany and the Czech Republic. The Nissan Xterra USA Championship Series expands to 31 races. 2003: The seventh consecutive year of expansion provides more than 50 events to compete in. 2004: Forty-five events in the U.S., plus 33 international races and a full-fledged XTERRA European Tour 2007: Now more than 100 races worldwide, and new global stops in Argentina and Costa Rica.
