As an artist, I am very much inspired by the novel and even more so on the movie adaptations of the Pride & Prejudice, thus this latest solo exhibition was based on.

In the movie, the characters are so vividly portrayed especially Elizabeth Bennet, the epitome of a beautifully mannered lady; glowing in the first light of perfection, has her own opinions and can be unforgiving. I am very attracted to the character’s attitude, body language and their facial expressions.

In the past, when we mentioned pride, we associated it with snobbishness, but to relates it to the modern context, when someone is very prideful, it could mean very egoistic. While prejudice simply means “to judge a book by its cover”.

I translated the expressions of the characters into my artworks with my own twist. The women I drew represents each trait of the characters from both the novel and movie. There are proud, shy or demure and mysterious expressions, all symbolise the Pride & Prejudice characters. But as we gaze upon their expressions, we could never simply judge them, the women might look forbidding, but she could be a warm person and very lovely. The background motives represent femininity, as flower usually associated with women as in a beautiful & graceful being. Najib Ahmad Bamadhaj — Artist Biography
