Summer Web-Blended Viticulture Classes at DMACC

Not sure what pest is infecting your grapes and how to control it? Consider taking VIN103: Introduction to Vineyard Pest Management where we look at how to diagnose the pests of grapes and investigate effective ways to protect the investment you have made in your grape crop. This summer we are also offering VIN104: Viticulture for Wine Production. This is a valuable class for both grape growers and wine makers as it looks at which vineyard practices are cost effective, how we can mitigate negative attributes of our fruit and increase positive ones, and many more great topics that grape growers and wine makers should be considering to optimize wine grape production. If you have any questions, contact Randall Vos at Des Moines Area Community College: [email protected]

Petiole test for Boron & Nitrogen is best done at full bloom

Petiole tests are the primary tool used to determine fertility needs once the vineyard is established. Soil testing determines the amount of nutrients in the soil. Comparing soil tests and petiole tests over time will begin to show trend lines and strengthen the value of each. Petioles (stem portion of the leaf) is the tissue recommended for determining the nutritional needs of grape vines. Obtaining a representative sample is critical. Optimum nutrient sufficiency ranges are based on petioles sampled at specific times during the season. The following chart provides some petiole analysis nutrient sufficiency ranges for here in the Midwest. These listed ranges will vary somewhat between universities and regions of the U.S. (a)

2 a. Taken from Vineyard Fertilizer Management, PPT, 4-7-2009 by Dr. Paul Domoto, ISU Extension The following guidelines can be used for proper sampling and handling procedures:

1. Full bloom (now) and around veraison (mid-July – mid-August) are the two times of the season to sample grapes. The full bloom sample is a suitable assay for nitrogen and boron. The veraison sample is more reliable for all the other nutrients.

2. At least 25-50 vines should be selected for sample collection. Vines not typical of the vineyard should be avoided.

3. Vines should be of the same age, variety, and rootstock growing on similar soil/site conditions.

4. For full bloom sampling, take the petioles from leaves opposite the bottom flower cluster. For samples taken at veraison, take the petioles from the most recently developed matured leaf.

5. Collect from 75 to 100 petioles. Short petioled varieties like Marechal Foch will need 150 to 200 petioles collected. Do not pick more than one petiole from any one shoot and 1-3 petioles can be sampled per vine. Do not sample any petioles connected to heavily diseased, insect or mechanical damaged leaves.

6. Dusty or dirty petioles should be rinsed with distilled and patted dry with a paper towel. Place the collected samples in a clean “paper” bag and send into a testing laboratory. Make sure to record all the necessary information required by the testing laboratory and location in the vineyard.

7. Make sure to contact the testing laboratory prior to sending in the petiole test. You want to do it right the first time.

Many factors can affect the nutrient composition of plant tissue. Soil moisture, soil fertility, diseases, insects, crop load, weather, and cultural practices can directly affect petiole tests. When properly used, petiole testing will provide the most reliable method to determine fertilizer needs for established bearing . Consider the petiole test as a picture in time. Comparing petiole tests from year-to-year will show more reliable trends over time.

The ISU Soil & Plant Analysis lab does not do plant analysis testing for grapes. There are plenty of commercial labs who can do this for you. The cost will probably be in the $25to $30 range. ISU Petiole sampling instructions and a list of commercial labs one can send a petiole sample to can be found here: http://viticulture.hort.iastate.edu/info/pdf/leafsampling.pdf

Innovative Under Vine Mgt. Strategies Webcast now Archived for Viewing

The “Innovative Under Vine Management Strategies” webcast that was held on 5-10-12 from Cornell University Extension has now been Excellent! archived for viewing (FREE). The following topics are covered in Good info! this 1hr.55 min. webcast:

Intra-row cover crops and other practices to favorably alter vine growth and canopy Architecture. The presentation will focus on research and grower experience using intra-row or under-trellis cover crops to (a) reduce soil erosion and to (b) suppress vegetative growth of vigorous grapevines under conditions of excess soil moisture. The discussion will also describe how canopy architecture is favorably altered by such treatments which can have a bearing on fruit composition and wine quality attributes such as color density, but also on pest management. - Dr. Tony Wolf, Virginia Tech

Vineyard Floor Management and Soil Health Different systems for managing vineyard soils and ground-cover vegetation influence soil fertility and functionality, soil water retention and release, soil biological activity, vine 7 nutrition, vigor and berry composition, and the natural environment around vineyards and wineries. This presentation will describe some long-term effects of mulches, legume ground- covers, mechanical tillage, and different herbicides on important soil attributes that are often called ‘soil health’. In addition, research on pesticide contamination of soils and surface water around vineyards will be reviewed, and suggestions will be made on ground-cover management systems that promote vine and soil health. - Dr. Ian Merwin, Cornell University

Notable Quotables

“there are now bonded wineries in all 50 states. The 46 states outside of California, Washington, Oregon and New York account for about 2.5% of U.S. wine production”

“the number of wine distributors in the U.S. has fallen by 90% since 1995”

Both from: Certified Specialist of Wine Study Guide, Society of Wine Educators

“From the perspective of color, is a trade-off: with longer maceration times, more tannins are extracted but this is at the expense of some loss of anthocyanins. However, the 9 anthocyanins that remain are likely to persist longer in the wine matrix, and might soften the astringency of as they become progressively incorporated into polymeric pigments.”
