Our RCIA journey continues to develop, as we are beginning to study core teachings of our Catholic faith. Together the candidates and their sponsors are exercising the complimentary gifts of faith and reason, which strengthen their relationship with God and the Church. In 1988, St. John Paul II released his encyclical, Fides et Ratio, “Faith & Reason.” The opening line reads: “Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth—in a word, to know himself—so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves (cf. Ex 33:18; Ps 27:8-9; 63:2-3; Jn 14:8; 1 Jn 3:2).” - St. John Paul II, Fides et Ratio.

One reason to take up this subject at the beginning of being formed in the Catholic faith—in a relationship with Christ and his Church—is to best understand how reason and faith are used in our pursuit of God. Moreover, we can come to understand nature as a source of knowledge. If you have been thinking about entering into full communion with the or know of a person who is, you are always welcome to join us! Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have regarding RCIA at 734-283-1366 x112 or email: [email protected].

Continue to exercise your faith this week as you seek God and live a life glorifying to Him. “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, because anyone who approaches God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” Hebrews 11:6 (NAB)

Peace to you, Denise

What Is Faith? God’s self-communication to humanity is called Divine Revelation. Revelation is an “order of knowledge, which man cannot possibly arrive at by his own powers.” It contains truths that God must reveal in order for man to know. For example a person may, by reason alone, contemplate the world, study its motion or causality, and deduce that it is logical to believe existence was created by a monotheistic God; however, that same observance of the natural world will not tell you that God is triune or that God came as a Jewish carpenter two-thousand years ago. Certain truths must be revealed to humanity, and Divine Revelation contains those truth that God has revealed. Man’s belief in these truths is called faith. The Church teaches that faith is a “human act by which the believer gives personal adherence to God which invites his response, and freely assents to the whole truth that God has revealed.” Faith is the intellectual assent of the believer to truths revealed to man by God. -© St. Peter’s List, 2017 Book Club In honor of our veterans, in particular our women veterans, we will be reading “Band of Sisters” by Kirsten A. Holmstedt in November.
