With the win he wrapped up first place in the overall standings for the European Grand Circuit, which comes with a bonus check of some $230,000. Shortly before that race, Prevost an- nounced that he would accept an invitation to the Breeders Crown. “We are bringing Rapide Lebel because we are the European champion and in there are no races for us during the autumn,” Prevost said. “It's also because of the prize money, of course. For $100,000 we wouldn’t come. To prove something to the world, that’s not our priority.” Despite all that Rapide Lebel has accomplished, Prevost believes a win in the Breeders Crown, which will be raced this year at Woodbine, would be extra special. “Of course,” Prevost responded when asked if he thought a Breeders Crown win would be Rapide Lebel’s greatest accomplishment. “First, there is no Group 1 in France. Second, we have proved that he is the best in Europe; for us that’s already a dream. So we can’t even imagine how it feels to win against the best horses of North America. Big Bad John Ready For Next Task By Lucas Marquardt A day after his popular win in the Little Brown Jug Big Bad John (Western Hanover) was in perfect shape and ready for new challenges. His next assignment will be the Oct. 2 Bluegrass at the Red Mile. “It seems like he’s ready to go again,” trainer Ron Potter said. “I was real happy with that.” Potter was still the man of the hour in Delaware, Ohio, yesterday. A resi- dent of the town and someone who trains year- round at the Delaware County fairgrounds, he barely had any time to cel- ebrate since he was so Big Bad John winning the Jug busy responding to the Jay Wolf photo outpouring of affection from well-wishers “What we did, I guess it still kind of sinking in,” he said. “Winning that is really special to all of us. I left my phone in my office and it was just blown up with text messages. We got back to the barn after the race and there were probably 50 people there, friends of ours. They were waiting on us to get back. I was down in the jug barn to make sure everything was OK.” The Jug was by far the biggest win on the year for Big Bad John, who also won this year’s Oliver Wendell Holmes at the Meadowlands. Though the 3-year-old male pacing crown is still up for grabs Potter admitted that his horse must finish up the year on quite a run to win the championship. “For him to get that (a championship) he’s pretty much going to have to win out,” Potter said. “We’re not eligible for the Tattersalls Pace and I don’t think we will supple- ment for that. We’ll shoot for the Bluegrass this next week and then have 20 days from then to go Woodbine for the Breeders Crown. He’s raced well when we’ve given him a little time between races. I can train him up and have him sharp to go if I have to do. We have Lexington, the Breed- ers Crown and the Messenger. I haven’t given it much thought for him to be best 3-year-old, but, yes, I think he’d have to win out.” HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 9/24/11 PAGE 3 of 10
