TITLE: Mountain Reserve Ambassador – Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR)

POSITION INFORMATION:

The Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR) is a privately owned forested reserve of approximately 7,500 acres of pristine wilderness located in the High Peaks Region of the of northern State. The AMR provides, through an easement with the State of New York, public hiking access through the property for access to some of the most desired mountains in the Eastern High Peaks and Dix Mountain Wilderness. It is a unique private and public access relationship between a private club adjacent to New York State-owned Forest Preserve lands.

This Mountain Reserve Ambassador position requires the willingness and ability to travel by foot and canoe and work alone in remote, rugged terrain and inclement weather conditions. The ability to use a map, compass and GPS unit, strong backpacking skills, canoeing skills, and self-motivation are essential. This position will also require working with members of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), other Backcountry Stewards, AMR personnel and interaction with the hiking public to complete assignments in nearby areas. The Ambassador will be trained by DEC personnel at the start of the position, and will then be supervised by the AMR Superintendent.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

. Provide information and education to users relating to the proper use and protection of the natural resource; . Inform, assist, and educate hiking public (if necessary), including providing information to trail users (regulations, directions, mileage to destination and other facilities); . Promote Leave-No-Trace practices; . Represent the AMR/NYSDEC positively; . Maintain logs and report in a timely fashion, when required; . When necessary, assist in emergency situations to the limit of your ability; . Maintain records including a handwritten daily journal, prepare and submit reports relating to daily activities, public use, maintenance needs, and special reports as needed; and . Other duties as assigned connected to the conservation project.

LOCATION DESCRIPTION

The service location is located at the Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR) – Ausable Club (St. Huberts, NY) in the Eastern High Peaks of the , New York State-owned Forest Preserve lands; specifically the Giant Mtn. Wilderness area and Dix Mtn. Wilderness area. With an extensive trail network, two private lakes (Lower and Upper Ausable Lakes) interconnected with NYS Wilderness areas, the tract offers abundant opportunities for public recreation for hiking. The Ausable Club, through its easement with the State of New York, does not allow motorized access (including bicycles) on the AMR; hiking only. No pets allowed.

TRAINING PROVIDED: Orientation training, backcountry trail work and facility monitoring and maintenance, Leave No Trace ethics training.

EDUCATIONAL/RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Ambassador will be trained by DEC Staff at the start of the position.

MAIN AREA OF FOCUS: Backcountry/Hiker interaction. This job will be a combination of providing frontcountry education and outreach at a trailhead as well as backcountry interactions throughout the trail system.
