A series of events conspired together to prevent the publication of the Chapter’s newsletter. The first event was a total computer crash. Nothing could be retrieved. That “nothing” FREE REIN is a bi-monthly included the March/April edition of Free Rein. It was publication of almost completed. The Pomona Chapter of the California Dressage Society. The second event was another total computer crash. The Neely’s graciously offered their laptop to me to use while my crashed computer was being BOARD MEMBERS: analyzed and fixed (also thanks to them). 3 • Free Rein • September/October 2005 TOTO, WE’RE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE by Amy Miller

In August 2003, Tanya Stivers, a former Pomona Chapter member, signed a contract for a new job. The new job required Tanya and her family (and happily her horse too!) to move to a new town. Tanya now lives in Nijmejen, Holland!

After spending a year and a half in Holland, Tanya shared some of her different riding experiences. Her experiences include traveling to huge international CDI competitions such as the Dusseldorf Master’s and Aachen; riding in clinics with Henk Van Bergen who previously coached the Dutch Olympic team; riding her own horse through the woods over to Germany; mentioning the word dressage to her work colleagues without having to define it; and last but not least, starting her own Dutch showing career. With the competition Tanya Stivers showing The Desperado in Holland season in full swing here in Southern California, it might be fun to compare notes between our local Riders earn or lose win points with each test they competitions and competitions in Holland. complete. Higher scores earn positive win points: 1 point for 60 to 65%, 2 points for 65 to 70% and 3 Tanya belongs to a local dressage riding club. Her points for 70 to 75%. A low score earns negative membership cost 110 euros (approximately $140) win points, moving you farther away from your 10 for the year as compared to $160 for CDS, USDF point requirement. Hearing about the different types of show grounds has really encouraged me to challenge my horses with more stimulating environments. I confess though, that actively seeking out distractions is still not an easy task. The joy of riding in solitude is great but it does not always seem to develop the obedience needed to ride in the midst of horse show distractions.

Tanya and I laughed about the decision to not use arena rails at the horse shows. When the horses reach M1 (approximately third level) then the arena has rails. Apparently, the younger less Tanya and Des back at the barn. experienced horses that are more likely to need rails don’t use them; while the more advanced horses (who can likely steer) receive the benefit of rails. The lower levels also use a 20 x 40 short court instead of the full court. The warm up arena is often not designated as it is here. Instead, a large grass field forms the warm up ring. No rails, restrictions, or segregation occurs in the warm up. Dressage horses and jumping horses share the same area. Dogs, strollers, bicycles, families, trainers and many other distractions also surround (and frequently invade) the warm up ring. Tanya credits Des with a wonderful, unflappable attitude that adjusts quickly to new situations. She says, “Show horses just have to adjust to more noise, more chaos, especially at the summer shows. I am not used to that, so I tend to get nervous in the warm up. I miss a more peaceful showing experience, but Des just acts like ‘What's up with you? Just ride!’ His quiet attitude helps me a lot since I know I don't have to worry about him.”

After spending the holidays visiting family here in Pasadena, Tanya was eager to get home to her Pomona Chapter Sponsor horse and get back to riding. She has a wonderful choice for her first weekend home: she can either go compete to earn more win points or she can go watch the CDI in Amsterdam where much of the Dutch Olympic team will likely be competing. Such a difficult decision!

Next month, Tanya promised to share more about some of the horse shows she watched last year, some of her more exciting trail rides and her recent trip to Vienna to see the famous riding school.

6 z Free Rein z September/October 2005 CDS-POMONA CHAPTER JR/YR BENEFIT by Julie A. Haefner

CDS-Pomona Chapter hosted a benefit for its junior and young riders on July 9, 2005 at Lucky 7 Stables in Ontario.

Board member and junior representative Jack Andrzejewski organized the event. He created the class list, secured the facility, obtained sponsors, and enlisted volunteers and guided participants through the classes. He even trailered a participant’s horse on the day of the benefit so she could participate.

Sponsors included Horsemart, Broken Horn, Caballero Feed, My Horse N’ Me, Jack Andrzejewski, The Hinsley Family, The Haefner Family, Cowboy Just Us, USA, Margo Machen, DVM, Don Scott Vrono, DVM, Linda Shier Photography, Justman Packaging & Display – Al Franco, Rocking T Ranch – Jim & Carol Tice, Owners, Lucky 7 Stables – Jim & Cathe Norvell, Owners, and A La Roan Riding Club – Janet Turgetto, Instructor.

Prizes for the raffle included one Cowboy Just Us, USA Saddle Pad (won by Heather Young), one Broken Horn $25 Gift Certificate (won by Janet Turgetto), two Caballero Feed $15 Gift Certificates (won by Madeline Straka and Julie Haefner), one Gift Basket from Horsemart (won by Lacee Sandberg), one Custom 8”x`10” Photo by Linda Shier (won by Rebekkah Hultgren), and one Gift Bucket from My Horse N’ Me (won by Loria Gill).

Volunteers put in fifty-one hours to make the benefit a success. These helpful people included Jack Andrzejewski, Rachel Bingle, Julie Haefner, Melody Hicks, Larry Hultgren (for Rebekkah Hultgren), Lacee Sandberg, Marie Santos (for Lacee Sandberg), Janet Turgetto and Jack and Robyn Young (for Heather Young).

The benefit was a success and a whole lot of fun. Enough money was earned to not only help pay for the JR/YR clinic with Kim Keenan, but also to have some left over for future events.

And most importantly, one question on everybody’s mind was answered: Can you really make a horse pop a balloon? For the answer to this question, please refer to the pictures!

9 • Free Rein • September/October 2005 TO SIGN OR NOT TO SIGN, THAT SHOULDN’T BE A QUESTION

The entry deadline for the show is quickly approaching. You have to get it in the mail or you might end up on the waiting list. You check your entry one last time. Copies of association cards? Check. All information filled in and correct? Check. Rider’s signature? Check. Owner’s signature? Check. Trainer’s signature? Uh, oh! Now what do you do?

Whatever you do, do not sign your trainer’s signature. An entry form is a legal document and signing your trainer’s name on the entry form is not allowed.

It may be convenient at the time, but it could cause huge problems for you later. If an issue were to come up, an invalid signature could jeopardize your membership(s) in good standing as well as your scores. It could also affect insurance and liability.

There are many alternatives to forging your trainer’s signature. The best plan is to prepare your entry well enough in advance that you can obtain all required signatures from the actual people: rider, owner, trainer and coach. You can also have your trainer sign several copies of generic entry forms in advance. You can find these forms on both the CDS and USEF websites as well as on www.freereinonine.com for Pomona Chapter Pomona Chapter Sponsor shows. Another alternative is to sign as trainer yourself, or if you are a minor, have your parent sign as trainer. The person signing as trainer is designated as a “responsible adult” and does not need to be a professional trainer. And parents who sign as trainer for their children are not required to pay association non-member fees. Tiffany Kell Brinton If any of the above alternatives will not work for Hillcrest Equestrian Center you, it is better to send in your entry with the Chino Hills*714-528-6036 trainer’s signature area blank than to sign it yourself. Have you trainer sign it the day of the Pomona Chapter Sponsor show when you pick up your show packet from the office. If using this option, it would be a good idea to include a note with your entry letting the show Linda Shier Photography secretary know that your trainer will sign the form Equine Portraits & Shows, Pets, Children & More the day of the show.
