Tolle Lege 2015 Spring.indd 2 4/16/15 9:44 AM A message from the Director of Institutional Advancement

The St. Rita Fight Song includes the words‘staunch’ and ‘true’ in its lyrics. What do those words mean? Staunch is defined as ‘loyal and committed in attitude’ while true is defined as‘real or genuine’. Those two small but significant words also describe you - our alumni, benefactors and friends of St. Rita High School. Thank you for your continued investment in our Ritamen and their families. Your support helps keep deserving young men in St. Rita High School.

It’s hard to believe our 108th graduating class will soon receive their diplomas. I remember that day 36 years ago when I walked out of St. Rita Parish church, diploma in hand and wondering ‘now what?’, not knowing when I would again see many of the strangers-turned-brothers I had met only four years prior. Little did I know that day I would become one of 24,000+ just like me – a Ritaman for life.

Great things continue on a daily basis at St. Rita and to Ritamen around the world: • 245 of our current students are enrolled in one or more Advanced Placement (AP) courses • Through mid-April, our 181 seniors have earned $ 10.4 million in college scholarships, on pace to break the class of 2014’s record of $ 15.2 million. • Darius Fleming ’08, is the first St. Rita alum to earn a ring as a member of the Super Bowl XLIX Champion (story inside). • Ethan Gray ’15, overcame debilitating physical challenges to receive the National Federation of High School’s ‘Heart of the Arts’ Award (story inside). • Our spring sports are off to a great start, with our undefeated (17-0 at this writing) and top-ten nationally ranked baseball and upstart lacrosse programs in full swing. • Our basketball program enjoyed yet another and Regional championship, led by four Division I scholarship student-athletes. Additionally, Ritamen worldwide continue to serve others and support their families as first responders, doctors, lawyers, tradesmen, salesmen and educators, to name just a few vocations our graduates have undertaken. I particularly enjoy the Ritamen luncheons held on the second Wednesday of the month (except June and August), where alums from 40 years and before enjoy each other’s company and talk of their days as St. Rita students. Thank you once again for being such a staunch and true supporter of St. Rita High School. Your in- vestment in our Annual Appeal has raised in excess of $ 6.5 million in the last eleven years alone, ALL of which goes directly to support Ritamen and their families. Please give me a call, drop me a note or visit us in your Alumni Office at St. Rita. Our current Ritamen walk on the shoulders of the 24,000+ of us who have come before them. Thank you for all you do for St. Rita High School.

St. Rita, Pray for Us!!

Tolle Lege 2015 Spring.indd 3 4/16/15 9:44 AM STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Nick Argy is a member of the St. Rita of Cascia High School class of 2015. He and his Dad, Tom, reside in St. Gabriel’s parish in Canaryville. Although seemingly quiet on the outside, Nick is very active at school, as witnessed by his extracurricular participation, including the rugby team, theater / improv group, past member of the chess team and as a member of the National Honor Society. Nick currently carries a 3.7 Grade Point Average and his current course load includes four Advanced Placement (AP) classes: Government, English, Calculus, and Chemistry along with two Honors-level courses: Latin and Theology, along with a Senior-level Economics course. Nick has ambitious plans for the next phase of his academic life. He is awaiting acceptance to the University of Texas - Austin, where he plans to study Aerospace Engineering. He has also applied to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Minnesota. He is a true Ritaman in the sense that he continues to embody the Augustinian core values of Veritas (Truth), Unitas (Unity) and Caritas (Love) by his extracurricular participation, striving for academic growth, achievement and excellence and attempting to make the world a better place.

St. Rita High School senior Ethan Gray is the winner of the National Federation of State High School Associations’ (NFHS) “National High School Heart of the Arts Award.” The award recognizes a student who exemplifies the ideals of the positive heart of the arts that represent the core mission of education-based activities.

“Once in a while you get a student who inspires you and Ethan is that type of student,” said St. Rita Band Director Cindy Gradek. “He has a quiet presence about him, and his classmates love him; however, I think the school is going to be blown away when they hear his story. Most people outside of band don’t know what he goes through.” Ethan perseveres through Sickle-Cell Thalassemia. After suffering a stroke in the St. Rita High School auditorium his junior year, Ethan now requires monthly blood transfusions to fight situations of “pain crisis” that can occur when sickle-shaped cells are deprived of oxygen.

When Ethan started at St. Rita he could not read sheet music. Now he excels in playing 11 musical instru- ments—focusing on saxophone, clarinet and guitar—playing in the pep, jazz and marching bands. He also is involved in the Spanish Club, the Paintball Club, the Theatre Program; and he is an accomplished visual artist, drawing yearbook covers and collaborating with professional comic book artists.

Ethan said, “St. Rita is a second home to me. With all my activities, I’m here so much it really seems like home. I truly feel that the encouraging environment at St. Rita has helped me develop my talents.”

St. Rita High School President Ernie Mrozek ‘71 said, “We certainly are proud of Ethan. He has immersed himself in so many diverse St. Rita activities. It’s been a joy to watch him persevere through challenges and grow as a student and an artist, collaborating with our faculty along the way.”

Next up for Ethan is a trip to perform at the NFHS’ Summer Meeting in New Orleans on June 29, 2015, where Ethan will be presented with the national award.

Tolle Lege 2015 Spring.indd 5 4/16/15 9:44 AM Winterfest XI a HUGE success!

On Saturday evening, January 24, 2015, Winterfest XI – “Around the World The Mustang Way” – took place on our campus and, as always, over 925 guests enjoyed a wonderful evening of food, drink, music, dancing and fun. The Winterfest Committee, led by Bill ’83, and Karen Manning, with the help of seasoned veteran leaders Ruth and John ’81, Leyden, room chairs and dozens of volunteers, put an international spin on the campus, causing many in attendance to do a double-take upon entering the school.

Imagine a 100-foot smoke-breathing dragon, music by Final Say and Palermo’s Pizza in the Ritatown China room (gym), music by the Larkin & Moran Brothers in the Mustanghaus & Biergarten in the Main Office entrance, Jerk Chicken and Jamaican Punch in the Jamaican Hallway, desserts and coffee at the Paris Café de Cascia in the Van Leuven Family Research Center Foyer, the dining-hall-turned-Italian restaurant provided by Bourbon Street and music with After Glow, featuring Gene Infelise, ’67 & Francesca in the main dining hall. Once you entered the campus through the Winterfest Entrance Airport Terminal, the first order of business was to enjoy a Fat Johnnie’s hot dog at The Mother Road – Rte. 66 in the McCarthy Center then pass through TSA-Security on the way to a great night.

At 10:30, all party-goers entered the gym for the build-up to the Grand Raffle drawing, led by Chair-couple Linda and Tom Fitzgerald and drawn by Fr. Bernie Scianna OSA ’83 and President Ernie Mrozek ‘71. This year, the Gabouer family won the Grand Prize of $ 20,000, while ten other lucky winners won $ 1,000 each. Winterfest is a great ‘Friend-raiser’ that continues to benefit our current Ritamen and their families.

Tolle Lege 2015 Spring.indd 8 4/16/15 9:44 AM A message from the Prior Provincial of the Midwest Augustinians

Dear Friends of the Augustinians,

Our Holy Father, St. Augustine, reminds us that “We are an Easter People and ‘Alleluia’ is our song!” I hope that we will not only celebrate this Easter Season with great joy, but also radiate this Gospel Joy by the way we live our Augustini- an Charism as St. Rita High School students, parents, alumni, staff, and friends!

It is also with great enthusiasm that I congratulate our newest Augustinian Affiliates! Affiliation of the Faithful to the Order is the highest honor that the Augustinians can bestow, and our newest members are appropriately deserving. From our St. Rita Community, this includes: Frank Caldarone (Palermo’s 63rd Street in Chicago); Sr. Ardis Cloutier, O.S.F. (Assistant in the Province Vocation Office), Mike Heeney (Heeney Funeral Home), and Letitia Olinger (St. Right High School). I also want to congratulate Coaches Jack Quinn and Gene Schaller on receiving the Augustinians’ Fidelitas Award. Special congratulations to Ethan Gray ’15 on receiving the Heart of the Arts National Award this year – the Augustinians are proud of your achievement! Additionally, I want to welcome Father Steve M. Curry, O.S.A., Ed.D., who will begin serving as the new Director of Augustinian Mission here at St. Rita next school year! Father Curry is well-versed in Augustinian Education having taught at Augustinian schools for nearly 20 years – welcome, Father!

Though the Augustinians have served here at St. Rita since 1905, we did not found our Midwest Province until 1941. Thus we begin celebrating our year-long 75th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee as a Province at this year’s Augustinian Gala on April 24 at the Drake Hotel. We will conclude it the weekend of our fourth annual Augustinian Gala, which will be held on April 22, 2016 in Chicago.

Thank you for all your prayerful support, both to St. Rita High School and to the Midwest Augustinians. We count on your prayers and financial sacrifices toward our Annual Fund for yearly support. I’m happy to share that the Augustinians’ Continuing Our Journey of Faith campaign, which is crucial for sustaining our Order for generations to come, has reached 80% of our $3.5 million goal! It is a momentous occasion for us as an Augustinian Family, especially as we embark on our 75-year Diamond Jubilee as a Province! Thank you again for your prayerful support of St. Rita and the Augustinians!

Sincerely in Christ and St. Augustine,

Very Rev. Bernard C. Scianna, O.S.A., Ph.D., ‘83 Prior Provincial of the Midwest Augustinians
