Men's single skating, ladies' single skating and pair skating Men's single skating, ladies' single skating and pair skating consist of the short programme and free skating. The top 24 single skaters and the top 16 pairs in the short programme, qualify for the free skating. The duration of the short programme for all three events is a maximum of two minutes and 40 seconds +/- 10 seconds. The duration of men's single skating and pair skating free skating is four minutes and 30 seconds +/- 10 seconds, for ladies' single skating free skating it is four minutes +/- 10 seconds. A total of 60 individual skaters (30 ladies and 30 men) and 20 pairs are expected to enter the competition. There is a possibility to add one skater or pair in each event, to reach 31 or 21 entries, if the host country does not qualify through the International Olympic Committee (IOC) - International Skating Union (ISU) qualification system. Ice dance Ice dance consists of the short dance and the free dance. The top 20 couples in the short dance qualify for the free dance. The prescribed rhythms for the short dance are decided by the ISU. The duration of the short dance is two minutes and 50 seconds +/- 10 seconds; for the free dance it is four minutes +/- 10 seconds. A total of 24 ice dance couples are expected to enter the competition. There is a possibility to add one couple in the event, to reach 25 entries, if the host country does not qualify through the IOC-ISU Qualification (see the below Host country solution). Host country If the host ISU member went through the normal qualifying procedure and did not qualify in any of the disciplines, the host ISU member shall have the right to enter one competitor per concerned discipline(s) as additional entry(ies) as long as the concerned skater(s)/pair/couple achieved the minimum total element score for the Olympic Winter Games, and there are additional places available out of the 10 places for the completion of a team (see Team event below). The host ISU member solution does not apply for the team event. Team event The team event comprises 10 teams. The teams may enter or finish the competition with the competitors in at least three of the four categories men's single skating, ladies' single skating, pair skating and ice dance. Qualification consists of a short programme/short dance. After the qualification a team will be allowed to replace up to two skaters/couples. Teams are awarded 10 to one team points for the first team segment (first place, 10 points; 10th place, one point). Qualification standing is set according to the sum of the team points. The top five (including all tied for fifth place) qualify for the final. Gangneung Ice Arena Figure Skating 강릉 아이스 아레나 피겨 스케이팅 / Patinage artistique Palais des glaces de Gangneung ) The final consists of a free skating/free dance. In the final phase, teams are awarded 10 to six-x (x = number of teams qualified over five) team points for each category (first place, 10 points, fifth place, six points, if more than five teams qualified: five points for sixth place, etc). The final standings are set according to the sum of the team points achieved in the qualification and the final. The duration of the short programme for ladies' single skating, men's single skating and pair skating is a maximum of two minutes and 40 seconds +/- 10 seconds. The duration of the short dance is two minutes and 50 seconds +/- 10 seconds. The duration of free skating for men's single skating and pair skating is four minutes and 30 seconds +/- 10 seconds, for ladies' single skating and free dance it is four minutes +/- 10 seconds. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE ISU WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AND THE OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES There are more restrictive qualification criteria for the Olympic Winter Games. CHANGES SINCE THE SOCHI 2014 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES Host country participation In the case where the host country, the Republic of Korea (KOR), went through the normal qualification procedure and did not qualify for any or only for some of the individual events (ladies' single skating, men's single skating, pair skating, ice dance), Rep.Korea will be allocated one host country place for the individual event(s). This means that the host country places would apply, if applicable, for one skater in ladies' single skating and/or one skater in men's single skating and/or one pair skating couple and/or one ice dance couple for a total maximum host country places of six skaters. The nominated skaters using the host country places will compete as No.31 in the men's single skating /ladies' single skating events, pair No.21 in the pair skating event or as couple No.25 in the ice dance event. The nominated skaters using the host country places must have the minimum eligibility standard set for all other skaters at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, in particular, but not limited to, having achieved in due time the minimum total elements scores determined and published by the ISU. SPORT RULES AND PROCEDURES Start order for individual, pairs and ice dance events For each event a separate initial draw will be held two days before the event. The draws for the start order of the short programme/short dance are made publicly available by the referee two days before the start of each event. The draw start order for the short programme/short dance is based on the current ISU world standings. The draws for the free skating are held after the short programme. Draws for the free dance are held after the short dance. Start order for the team event Each team will comprise one man, one lady, one pair and one ice dance couple selected from among entered skaters, substitutes, or the 10 non-qualified skaters, which are available to complete a qualified team. The teams may enter or finish the competition with competitors in three of the four categories. The start list for the short programme/short dance of each category of the team event will be set in the reverse order of the ISU world standings of that category. The start list for the free skating/free dance will be set in the reverse order of the ranking in the short programme/short dance of that category. Gangneung Ice Arena Figure Skating 강릉 아이스 아레나 피겨 스케이팅 / Patinage artistique Palais des glaces de Gangneung ) ISU judging system for figure skating and ice dance 1) Event officials Each discipline is managed by a referee. The three main officials who monitor the competition and keep track of the programme elements performed by the skaters are the technical controller, the technical specialist and the assistant technical specialist. Technical specialist The technical specialist identifies the elements the skater is performing in real time and the level of difficulty of the element, if applicable. The level of difficulty of certain elements is defined by the ISU judging system.
