Beresford's bat, and the Red Wings, are heating up Kevin Oklobzija– Democrat & Chronicle - 5/14/16

Today’s game of is one statistical breakdown after another.

Hitting stats are analyzed and re-analyzed, with a batter’s tendencies becoming as vivid as a red Sharpie on the white page of a scorecard.

From those analytics come defensive shifts, with every team willing to move outfielders in and toward the line and have shortstops play on the second-base side.

And yet through it all, James Beresford just keeps picking up hits. And hits. And more hits.

On Saturday, the 27-year-old second baseman singled in his first four at-bats and scored three times as the Rochester Red Wings built an 8-1 lead through four innings en route to an 8-3 victory over the Syracuse Chiefs at Frontier Field.

By game’s end, Beresford was hitting .331, trailing only the now-with-the-Philadelphia Phillies Tommy Joseph on the International League leaderboard.

The common refrain from Wings manager Mike Quade in every post-game chat with the media: “James just does what he does.”

“I don’t know any way else to say it,” Quade said Saturday night after the 4-for-5 performance. “They shade him to left and he beats them to the gap. Some guys just have a knack of putting balls in the right places.”

Indeed, the native of Mount Waverly, Australia, has turned himself into a bit of a hitting machine for the Wings the past 3.5 Triple-A seasons. Upon his promotion from Double-A in 2013, he hit .298. In 2104, his first full year in the IL, he hit .276. Last season he finished second in the league in hitting (.307) and hits (153).

And now this year he’s at .331, with most of the swings coming in weather that is hardly conducive to a wood bat hitting 93 mph fastballs.

Since May 1, he has hit safely in 13-of-14 games, hitting a robust .412 over that span (21-for-51). He’s not proclaiming himself a master of the bat. When you start getting cocky at the plate, the average nosedives.

“Throughout a long season, you can’t get caught up in one or two games,” Beresford said. “You try to stay on an even keel.”

In Saturday’s victory over the Chiefs, Beresford did a pretty good imitation of by simply hitting ‘em where they ain’t. In the first inning he looped an opposite-field flare to short left field, near the line and scored on Buck Britton’s three-run double.

In the third, he grounded a Taylor Hill (1-3) pitch back up the middle and scored on a mammoth 429-foot home run by Kennys Vargas.

In the fourth, Beresford lined a single to left-center and scored on a single by Wilfredo Tovar, and in the fifth he provided an instant replay but was stranded.

He also made a sensational catch in the fifth inning, sprinting straight back into center field and to snare a ball hit by Scott Sizemore.

He provides the consistent glove, has the hot bat and the Wings as a team are sizzling. They have won seven of eight and are 16-8 since April 20. “We’re playing some fun baseball,” Beresford said. 14

Lookouts top Shuckers in title rematch, 5-2 David Paschall – Times Free Press - 5/14/16

The Chattanooga Lookouts delighted the first sellout crowd of the season Saturday night at AT&T Field, topping the Biloxi Shuckers 5-2.

It was the first matchup between the Lookouts and Shuckers at AT&T since last September's Southern League title series, when Chattanooga won the fifth and deciding game for its first championship since 1988.

"It feels like it was yesterday," Lookouts first baseman Dalton Hicks said. "They're a really good team, and it's always fun to play them. They're a good hitting team and they make good pitches, and they make plays behind them."

The Shuckers entered Saturday night with a league-best 22-12 record and scored a run in the first inning, but the Lookouts jumped on Biloxi pitcher Adrian Houser later in the first for three runs. Zach Granite opened with a single to center field, Shannon Wilkerson followed with an RBI double to right and Daniel Palka added a home run to left.

Granite went 4-for-4 before an audience of 6,376, while Ryan Walker continued his successful Double-A start by singling and scoring in the fifth and seventh innings.

While Biloxi has raced out to a solid start following last season's title series, the same can't be said for Chattanooga. The Lookouts are 16-20, which is why last September seems a bit more distant for manager Doug Mientkiewicz.

"That seems like forever ago to me," Mientkiewicz said. "You try to fight those kind of thoughts. They're still memories, but you try to teach the guys to move on.

"This is a different group, and we're trying to get these guys to understand that we haven't really played that well but that we're not out of it yet."

Mets nip Miracle 3-2 in 11 News-Press - 5/14/16

PORT ST. LUCIE - The St. Lucie Mets pushed across the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning to post a 3-2 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle on Saturday night at Tradition Field.

The Miracle opened the scoring in the very first inning for the fourth straight road game. Tanner Witt, who had walked to lead off the inning, scored on a bases loaded single by Chris Paul to put the visitors on top 1-0.

The Mets answered in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead on a two-out, two run home run by John Mora off Miracle starter .

Fort Myers responded quickly as Paul struck again in the top of the third to tie the score at 2-2. Gordon singled with one out, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Paul's line drive RBI double to left field.

The Miracle did have a couple of good chances to push across a run late in the game as they put two runners on base in each on the 10th and 11th innings, but were unable to break the tie.

As a result, the score remained unchanged until the bottom of the 11th when the Mets were able to plate the game-winner. Miracle reliever Luke Bard retired the first two batters in the inning before Wuilmer Becerra reached on an infield single, stole second, and scored on Michael Katz' line single to left field..

Cedar Rapids Kernels blast Wisconsin again, 14-6 The Gazett - 5/14/16

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. — The Cedar Rapids Kernels continued their offensive assault against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers via a 14-6 win Saturday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.

Cedar Rapids (20-15) scored 12 runs in a win over the T-Rats Friday night and scored seven runs in the first inning Saturday, knocking out starting pitcher Jake Drossner. Wisconsin closed within 7-5 eventually, but a five-run seventh inning put the game away.

Alex Perez and Brian Olson had three hits apiece in a 17-hit attack for the Kernels, who conclude the series Sunday afternoon. Every starter had a hit, minus J.J. Fernandez, who still walked twice and scored a pair of runs.

Starting pitcher Dereck Rodriguez (1-4) went the first six innings, allowing six runs but notching his first Midwest League win. Michael Theofanopoulos finished up, striking out six in three relief innings and recording the save.
