“Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” - Athlete Oath

To our Fans,

The 2012 fiscal year proved to be an exciting one as plans continued to develop for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games, to be hosted here in Southern California. We look forward to having our program proudly be the home of more than 7,000 athletes from 170 countries for the largest sporting and humanitarian event in the world.

Here in our backyard, more than 14,000 athletes enjoy competing year-round in 12 sports during two different sports seasons. Our two championship-level events, the Summer Games and Fall Games, both enjoyed an increase in spectator numbers…hopefully a sign to come of the explosive attention our program will receive as the World Games nears.

In order to prepare for this world-class event, our Strategic Plan unveiled 20 focus priorities for 2012, aligning our organization with the Special Olympics global movement. Those priorities allowed us to take a hard look at how we run our organization, helping us to do extensive research on all facets of our program-- from competitions to fundraising, from our new Young Athletes Program to our Healthy Athletes Program, while evaluating and sophisticating our technological capabilities to our use of volunteers and movement leadership.

With the Strategic Plan’s direction, as well as multiple successful fundraising events, we finished the year with a balanced budget. A new event, “ We Run the City,” was launched, utilizing the 5k concept and taking full advantage of the USC-UCLA rivalry to help raise more than $63,000 for our organization.

As we look to grow our number of athletes, additional activities were developed under Project UNIFY, a national initiative funded by the Department of Education. Through Project UNIFY’s themes of inclusion, acceptance and youth leadership, SOSC began implementing inclusive Young Athletes and Unified Sports programs within the Unified School District. The continued development and empowerment of youth leaders ensures that our programs will continue to grow under their leadership and enthusiasm for years to come.

None of this success would have been possible without the incredible dedication of our athletes, Board of Directors, volunteers, donors, family members and staff. Looking ahead, 2013 will only bring more excitement as we continue plans for local program growth, new volunteer management, and direction for individual giving. We congratulate you all on bringing out the champion in all of us!
