ANNUAL REPORT 2015-‘16

Smt.Archana Surana, Managing Trustee’s message to Students on Graduation Day held on Tuesday, 29th March, 2016

Beloved Parents, friends, dignified guests, faculty and graduating class of 2016 – It has been 3 long years and 3 short years – long years because of all the readings, projects, exams and attendance. Short because of the memories you will carry. My address on this stage is customary besides being one of the most fulfilling and gratifying assignments during any academic year. (I am no Moses and I have no commandments to offer, but the Promised Land is awaiting all of you outside – whatever may be your choice for future). I am elated, truly...truly excited to be present and connected to you at this important moment in your journey. It’s your graduation day! Time to thank your College, Teachers, Internet, Google, Wikipedia, Microsoft word, Power Point, copy and paste for getting you here to this hall.

For the last 21 years people around you have taught you to stay away from life’s dark secrets. The Dark secrets which are mostly uncomfortable and unconventional, but allow me to take you there for once and for good.

Celebrating Weaknesses.

Once a depressed boy asked Swamy Vivekananda, can there be anything worse than losting one’s girlfriend?! Swamy replied, YES! You can lose your girlfriend with the confidence of getting another, but you cannot lose your confidence of getting another. Self-confidence is striking a right balance between your strength and weakness. If you want to move from self-confidence to super-confidence, then, celebrate your weaknesses. Look at all the successful people around you in the field of business, politics, sports and entertainment. There are many good people and there are some greats. Good people played

to their strengths and great people play with their weaknesses. Shore up your deficiencies! Shore up your weaknesses! Have a clear look at it. Then decide the size of strength required to neutralize your weakness. So celebrate your weaknesses today!

Celebrate your Fears..

The common factor between wild jungle and corporate jungle is FEAR. Fear is a survival mechanism only in the wild but not here. When in fear, you either fight or flight (that is run away) or you get paralyzed, not knowing what to do. Look at the television reality shows. Young men and women, spend a lot of time taking stupid risks to demonstrate how they can conquer fear. They are not mad. They are just trying to show you –larger the fear, great is the growth.

Remember the fear of what could happen, will make nothing happen. You will never know how to react or respond to a fearful situation until it happens. Trust me there is no great motivator like fear, because while in fear, you have a choice either to panic, paralyze or get motivated. Faith can keep you alive for long, but fear can keep you alive forever.

When you can fail by doing what you always wanted to, what is wrong in opting for the one that you always feared? Start loving fear with no fear and celebrate your fears today!

Celebrate your imperfections..

Depression! JK Rowling fought it. Deepika Padukone admitted it. Honey Singh is fiting it. Depression has become the disease of the civilization. Many times, youngsters do not know what they are depressed and the rest is not sure whether they are depressed or not. Funny, isn’t it? Stephen King rightly said, ‘Monsters are real, Ghosts are real. They live inside your mind and if you allow them, they win’. A personal loss, business loss, loss of job, conflict with people round and you, illness, family disputes and meaningless expectations are the reasons for depression. You will come across these challenges. But remember you are not alone. You are not the only one and you are not at the bottom of the pit.

ANNUAL REPORT 2015-‘16

SURANA COLLEGE #16, South End Road, Bengaluru-04

Take it from me. Depression is not bad. It is only during those moments you discover the true secrets of your character: Research says that while in depression, you become less judgmental, you become more compassionate, you become outwardly focussed to kill melancholy, you start having fascinating conversations with strangers and you laugh more for no reason. See now, even depression looks beautiful and desirable.

Depression in youth is attributed mainly to your hunger for perfection and success. Blame it on all the motivational gurus who asked you to aim for perfection. Why do you strive for perfection in an imperfect world? You don’t have to be. Just listen to your inner calling and be the way god made you and wanted to be. God always wants you to be real and not perfect. Being perfect is boring; your imperfections make you truly beautiful. Uncut, flawed diamonds are more costly than cut diamonds. Aren’t they?

There are people out there to love and accept you with all your imperfections, so celebrate your imperfections today!

YOU are your first priority..

The juice that comes out of a fruit depends on the fruit. What is within you will come out when life squeezes you. So invest every second of your life for your better tomorrow. All relationships are only on the surface. Deep inside you are always alone. Even when a thousand people are around you, a part of you is always alone. Haven’t we felt this? This is because we came into this world alone and you will leave this world alone.

If you master this secret, you will become dependable and not a dependent. Only when you are dependable, you can make others life worthwhile. You cannot cherish good moments in life! You will ANNUAL REPORT 2015-‘16

5

SURANA COLLEGE #16, South End Road, Bengaluru-04

not be able to celebrate any relationship in life unless you begin to love yourself and feel good about yourself. Being important to someone is no big deal. Being important to you is truly important. So never say ‘Yes’ to others by saying ‘No’ to yourself. You are your first priority. Celebrate being selfish!

Finally, Celebrate being funny..

I know that sounds funny. Mind you, being funny is a serious business. The first half of your lives is ruined by your parents, teachers and the second half will be ruined by your husband, wife and children. You have very little time in between for yourselves. Don’t make a serious life highly serious by taking it seriously. A little nonsense here and there is fine. Life is too short to be serious all the time. Don’t look for reasons to laugh. If you don’t have a reason, then laugh at your own self. You grow up when you have a hearty laugh at yourself. So celebrate being funny! You will save a lot on your medical bills and insurance payments.

Before I conclude, for the last 21 years, you would have given sleepless nights, tense moments, heartbreaks and copious tears of joy and agony to your parents. Today, as a teenager, you expect others including your parents to respect your decisions. Today you want to buy your own clothes and look into the menu card and order food for yourselves. Every age and phase of life has some respect associated with it and as a parent they will expect you to respect them. Their intentions are noble. Never underestimate their concern and misinterpret as invasion of privacy. Amidst your busy schedule and struggle for space never forget the fact that your parents are the very reason you are here. While you are busy growing, your parents are growing old too. Even the most annoying parent wants the best for their child. Take good care of them. There is no point in staring at an empty chair when they are gone.

Dear passing graduates, whatever may be your past, kindly make peace with it before you start your journey further, allow people to have their opinions about you and it is none of your business, stop ANNUAL REPORT 2015-‘16

SURANA COLLEGE #16, South End Road, Bengaluru-04

thinking too much – you don’t have to know the answers always; but have sensible questions in life, and smile a lot. Because nobody likes to see you smile when your teeth’s are gone.

Pursue higher studies for better career. Or take-up jobs that is close to your heart or if need be start you own business. Any business is ok. But not airlines! Even if you start an airline business, don’t name it Kingfisher? Even if you name it Kingfisher, don’t take loans from SBI.

Don’t mistake me for a boring lecture. I gave you these tit-bits not because I know them. It is because I have done these stupid and craziest things at your age. It doesn’t cost you much in life. So be crazy! Be stupid! Be weird! Be successful! Be whatever! But be happy!

God bless and congratulations

Annual Report (UG Courses) : 2015-16
