This year has undoubtedly been the most difficult year in the history of higher learning. The world has been reeling with the impacts of COVID-19. Overnight, you were asked to change your entire approach to learning, and, in doing so, you gave up much of the college experience.
Beyond the challenges of adjusting to the new reality of living in a time of a worldwide pandemic, you have also been a witness to societal wrongs leading to nationwide calls for reformation. You will be leaving our college at a time when you will have to deal with other trials such as economic turmoil, a changing political landscape and many other challenges like no other WNC graduating class before. The good news is that I am more than confident you are up to dealing with whatever comes your way.
As you move into your future and navigate these uncharted waters, please keep in mind some important wisdom. The greatest challenges are only ever given to those who have the fortitude to overcome them. Think about all you have gone through during the last few months and yet here you are on this special day, a college graduate. You triumphed because you had the internal strength to endure and persevere. You succeeded where others failed because you march into the unknown as if success is inevitable.
Graduates of the year 2020, I want you to know how significant you are as a group. Because you are college graduates, much will be expected of you. The world will look to you for answers and solutions. The future needs your energy, your enthusiasm and the light that beams out of you now more than ever. Your generation will solve the problems that affront society. When things get difficult and you are struggling to find the vigor to keep moving forward, remember the words of Dr. Martin Luther King: “Somewhere along the way, we must learn that there is nothing greater than to do something for others.”
What you have learned at Western Nevada College will be with you the rest of your lives. Remember this: The education you have worked so hard to accomplish will be more than a tool you will use to reach your goals. What you have accomplished by earning your college degree will also serve as a shield that will protect you against the injustices of the world.
Congratulations, graduates of the Class of 2020! You are a group like no other in history, and we are extremely proud to count you as members of our Wildcat family.

Ceremonial Mace In a traditional commencement ceremony, a mace is an ornamented staff carried during the procession by the college’s senior faculty member. WNC’s mace was created from walnut by Silver State Industries in Carson City, and embellished with the college branding by the college’s machining department.
WNC Gonfalons These banners represent Western Nevada College and its academics through symbolism, color and design. They are the creation of WNC graphic design professor Jayna Conkey, in collaboration with art faculty member Rachel Stiff.
WESTERN NEVADA COLLEGE The open book represents knowledge and an open mind; the torch represents wisdom, truth, strength, endurance, courage, determination, authority, and skill. It also represents achievement and prosperity. The infinity symbol represents lifelong learning and has no bound or end. Blue represents education and intelligence; white represents integrity; gold represents success.
4 WESTERN NEVADA COLLEGE COMMENCEMENT 2020 PROFESSIONAL & APPLIED TECHNOLOGY The gears represent innovation and workforce path. The head and brain mean intellect, imaginative problem-solving and professionalism; the circuit board represents technology. The color green implies growth, the organic nature of learning and ever- changing. Dark blue signifies the spirit of inquiry and critical thinking; black denotes solidity; white means lifelong learning; gold signifies success.
ALLIED HEALTH The caduceus represents healing; the cupped hands serve as ideas of helping and healing, teamwork and collaboration. The heart represents the pulse of life, caring, cultural sensitivity and respect for all. White embodies ethics, commitment to the patient and better health for all, as well as lifelong learning; apricot emodies nurses who practice with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth and uniqueness of every individual. Royal blue signifies protection of health; gold represents science and success, inner strength, enthusiasm for learning and individualism.
LIBERAL ARTS The trivium represents the original 7 liberal arts. The flower of life (behind the trivium) represents mathematical properties, geometry, growth and inquiry; the sphere around the flower of life stands for global/ interconnections; the rotated square represents inclusion. White constitutes liberal arts/letters/ humanities and lifelong learning; dark blue denotes philosophy and political science; gold represents math/sciences and success; purple stands for achievement and art.
