  • OTC Elite Athletes Shine on Diamond League Stage
OTC Elite Athletes Shine On Diamond League Stage By Curtis Anderson Oregon Track Club Elite’s Francine Niyonsaba and Nijel Amos continued to be among the shining stars on the Diamond League circuit in July. The two 800-meter runners closed out the month ranked second in the world in their re- spective events after posting stunning season-best marks just off their lifetime PRs. Niyonsaba placed second in Monaco on July 20 with a time of 1 minute, 55.96 seconds, adding to her overall lead in the Diamond League standings, 43 points in six races, with her fifth sub-1:58 performance of the outdoor season. Earlier in the month, the reigning 2016 Olympic silver medalist claimed Dia- mond League victories in Lausanne, Switzerland, on July 5 and Rabat, Moroc- Thompson, @elevation0m Photo by Travis co, on July 13. Nijel Amos “That’s one tough lady,” OTC Elite coach Mark Rowland said of the back-to-back wins. “She ran in front and towed the rest of the athletes to a fast time. She showed her competitive nature down the home straight by refusing to relinquish the lead.” The native of Burundi set her personal best of 1:55.47 last year, and she clocked her season best of 1:55.86 in Paris on June 30. After the race in Monaco, Niyonsaba flew home to Burundi to meet with government officials to discuss help- ing underserved women and children in that country through the establishment of her proposed foundation. She also represents UNICEF in Burundi as a motivational speaker.

IAAF Diamond League Media Information Guide 2013 www.diamondleague.com 1/37 INTRODUCTION With the creation of the IAAF Diamond League we set out to reinvent the one-day meeting structure of our sport, to bring clarity to the top tier circuit of international invitational competition which takes place outside the IAAF World Championships and Olympic Games. While there remain many challenges ahead if we are to make further advances and cement the IAAF Diamond League’s position as one of the world’s major sports series, we firmly believe that we have made an exceptionally good start in the first three years of the new competition structure. The IAAF Diamond League has a worldwide audience and a broadcasting reach undreamt by the Golden League series which preceded it. Thanks to a 14 meeting circuit which covers Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the USA, a competition programme that includes virtually the full spectrum of Olympic track and field disciplines, the guarantee of the world’s greatest athletes battling to win 8 Million Dollars in prize money, accumulating points season long to win their event’s Diamond Race Trophy, the IAAF Diamond League has captured the public’s imagination like no other non-championship athletics competition. I eagerly look forward to the 2013 season of the IAAF Diamond League which commences in Doha and concludes at the end of August and beginning of September with the finals in Zurich and Brussels. We have been remind- ed of how true this is since a previously unknown virus transformed every aspect of our personal and working lives. It has been a time of great loss and we acknowledge and honor all those working in the front line who personally sacri"ce themselves by risking their lives daily. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of all those a!ected by the pandemic. Covid-19 has also highlighted the underlying structural inequalities in our society. When we founded The British Student Doctor, we established our policy on diversity and inclusion, with equality and equity in publishing being a vital aspect of our mis- sion. We cannot be any clearer: Black lives matter. Black medical students matter. Black voices matter. In her editorial, Olamide Dada, a medical student from Cardi!
