Cornard United F.C. History

Cornard United are believed to have formed in 1920, playing in the Sudbury & District League for four seasons. They then transferred to the Nayland & District League for the 1924/25 – 1927/28 seasons, winning the league in all four seasons they were in it. In 1928/29 they returned back to the Sudbury & District League. Nothing is known of the club between 1929 and when they reformed in 1964.

In 2014, Cornard United celebrated its Golden Jubilee, having been re-formed back in 1964. The club initially played in The Sudbury Sunday League, before joining Division Three of The Bury and District League in 1966.

They were promoted to Division Two at the end of their first season, and further promoted again at the end of the next season. In 1970 they transferred to Division Six of The Colchester & East Essex League and were promoted to Division Five in 1972. After winning all 26 matches of the 1973-74 season they were promoted once again, and over the next few seasons, further success brought more promotions so by 1975 they had reached Division Two.

In 1976 the club switched leagues again, this time to Division One of The Essex and Border League. However, when this league was restructured two seasons later the club were moved down to the Second Division. They remained in the Second Division until 1983 when they were promoted back to Division One. In 1985- 86 they won promotion to the Premier Division, and in the 1988-89 season they won the league, the league cup and the with a 1-0 victory over local rivals, Sudbury Wanderers.

As a result of this success, the club was moved to Division One of the Eastern Counties League. They won this division at the first attempt, and were promoted to The Premier Division, where they remained until 1996, when after a poor season they were relegated back to the First Division, where they have remained ever since.

Initially, the club played at the Great Cornard Recreation Ground, before moving to Great Cornard Upper School in 1975. It was not until 1982 that they moved to their current ground in Blackhouse Lane. The record attendance at this ground was set in 2001 when over 450 people watched a friendly match against West Ham United.

After many years running The Club, Chairman and Manager, Chris Symes, left the club during 2013 and Mark Hoskin took over the roles. He, in turn, has now moved on and the current Chairman is Harvey Doherty who took over in 2014 after spending 10 years as chairman of Cornard dynamos.

Cornard United F.C. History Cont…

The first team was managed by Paul Grainger, with Chris Tracy assisted by Jack Wignall taking over for 2015/16. Ry Lines & Liam Aves took up the reins partway through 2017/18 season which was very much a transition season. Family commitments have meant that Ry Lines stepped down ahead of the 2018/19 season. The team was managed for most of the 2018/19 season by player managers Matt Grove and Michael Schofield and Colin Athey as goal keeping coach. 2018/19 saw Cornard United make the final of the Suffolk Senior Cup, the first cup final in 30 years, unfortunately narrowly missing out to Achilles. First Team player managers Grove and Schofield decided to step down after the final.

2019/20 Cornard United Grassroots has been formed, chaired by Tony New. This consists of a number of teams from under 9s through to under 18s playing in Sunday leagues and based at the Delphi Sports Ground.

2019/20 sees another transition year for the first team following the resignation of joint player managers after the senior cup final and the majority of first team squad deciding to move elsewhere. The new first team management team of Dave Childs, Micky Southee and Lee Web with Colin Athey continuing as goal keeping coach take up the challenge.

The reserves are managed by Steve Rogers with Ray Manser stepping down at the end of 2018/19. Steve decided to step down early into the 19/20 season and the reserves are now managed by Kern Harrington assisted by Jack Prentice.

For 2019/20 the under 18s were initially managed by Mark Arnold and Chris Benham who are experienced youth coaches at Cornard Dynamos. Soon into the 19/20 Season both Mark and Chris had to step down due to unforeseen work commitments. Tim Jefferies has now taken up the U18 hotseat currently assisted by Tony New.

Visiting Club History – Norwich CBS

Norwich CBS FC has a long history and several club name changes along the way. The club initially formed in 1888 under the name, Norwich Union FC and at its peak fielded four Saturday teams, a Sunday XI, a veterans XI, and we were working to develop a youth set up. In the late 1990’s with Ian Bird in charge of the playing side and a driving force behind many initiatives the club achieved welcome success in the Business Houses League and the Anglian Combination, winning the Junior Cup in 1999 and Division 2 of the Anglian Combination secured our status in Senior Norfolk Football as our short-term objectives. Longer term, we were seeking to enter the Ridgeons League. With the installation of excellent floodlights at ‘Pinebanks’, we almost achieved that ambition but finished one place short in the Premier Division in order to qualify for acceptance. However, the best laid plans….. In July 2017, we received the devastating news that ‘Pinebanks’ was to close in its entirety with the loss of our playing and social facilities. Undaunted, we were determined not to let the club and all its history pass into oblivion. After much frustrating searching, we were able to play at Dussindale for one season as AFC Norwich. Following that, we proudly emerged as Spixworth Football Club, and are indebted to David Potter, his Sunday team colleagues, Spixworth Parish Council, and Spixworth Village Hall Management Committee, in particular Lynne Jeffrey for all their work infacilitating the change. Middy Brown, who is a well-known personality in Spixworth has also worked very hard to maintain the stability of the club and managed the team for several seasons. All the hard work was rewarded at the end of the 2011 season, when Spixworth won the senior league cup competition, more commonly known as the Mummery cup, beating Acle on penalties after a very entertaining 2-2 draw after extra time. 2012/13 season was arguably the clubs most successful season. Finishing runners up in the Sterry Cup (losing only one league game all season), and runners up in the Mummery Cup Final & Semi-Finalist in the Norfolk Senior Cup in a cup tie witnessedby a crowd of 350+ at Spixworth Village Hall! 2013/14 season saw the club match its previous season’s league achievements by finishing runners up again in the chase for the inaugural Sterry Cup. 2014/15 season saw us lifting the mummery cup again for the second time in five seasons. 2015/16 season saw us appointing a new management team who put together big plans for the club over the next 5 years. Unfortunately, we just felt short of the Sterry cup again after a shootout against our rivals Acle United saw them victorious with a 2-0 win, meaning they lifted the Sterry cup on our home ground, a very difficult and bitter pill to swallow. We did manage tosecure some silverware when we completed the cup double, winning the mummery cup once again with a win over Caister FC and the Don Frost win over the title winners Acle United. 2016/17 season finally saw us lift the Sterry cup in a season that will be very difficult to match with records being broken left right and centre, with only 1 loss and 1 draw and a goals record of 100 scored. We also gained promotion to the Thurlow NunnLeague and in doing so became the first Norfolk team in 23 years to make the step up from the Anglian Combination to the Thurlow Nunn league. With this promotion came a change of home ground and name to Norwich CBS FC. 2017/18 season we beat 5 teams to reach the last 32 of the FA Vase, only going out to Leighton FC after leading for 86 minutes. All 5 teams that we beat were step 5 so a fantastic achievement. We finished 8th in the league with a small squad of 14 players which was another great achievement. We are now pleased to play under the name of Norwich CBS Football Club, with our home ground being the Field Of Dreams at the FDC in Bowthorpe Norwich. 2018/19 season we lost 2 players that we had relied on for our goals, scoring over 50 goals between them in the 2017/18 season and struggled to replace them, one through injury and the other moving to a higher playing level but we still managed tofinish 6th and were there or thereabouts for most of the season still playing an entertaining brand of football.
