Opening and managing church buildings in step 4 of the Roadmap out of Lockdown (Introduction only Full Version can be found https://www.churchofengland.org/sites/default/files/2021- 07/COVID%2019%20Guidance%20from%20the%2019th%20July%2020 21%20v1.0.pdf or ask Fr Peter) Issue Date Version Issued by Number 19 July 2021 1.0 The House of Bishops COVID-19 Recovery Group This guidance has been released to coincide with the Government’s move to Step 4 of its roadmap on the 19th July. Please be aware the contents of this document only apply from the 19th July. This document will evolve as further guidance is published by Government and other bodies that link with our life as a Church. Details about updates will be highlighted in this box. This guidance has been written in response to the decision by the Government to move to step 4 of the ‘Roadmap out of Lockdown’. The approach taken by the Government in this step is to remove most coronavirus legislation but to promote guidance that emphasises the personal and corporate responsibility of individuals and organisations to protect others and themselves. Within the Church we believe that everyone is known and loved individually by God and that as many members within one body we are called to be responsible to and for one another, respecting the more vulnerable whose suffering is our suffering (1 Cor 12:12-27). The move to step 4 means we are being asked to take even more personal responsibility around coronavirus than when we were compelled to adhere to Government restrictions. These restrictions have necessarily been blunt instruments and for some people and in some places seem unnecessary or overly restrictive. For others, each easing of restrictions seemed to bring additional risk to themselves or those they love who have remained vulnerable to the virus. As a body we now need to move forward without these legal restrictions and as churches decide how best to manage the risk to ourselves and others. Church leaders are best placed to know their own communities and environments, the situations where there will be many people together who do not normally meet and the places where they will come

2

together; to listen to the voices of vulnerable in their communities and where their fears and concerns lie. We recognise it may be difficult to agree exactly what to do and how to come to a decision on a specific point. Rural and Area Deans, Archdeacons and Bishops can all be asked for help and advice. As the Covid restrictions lift, there remain the legal responsibilities of the Incumbent, the PCC and of course the duty of the church wardens to maintain order and decency in the church and churchyard, and, possibly quite relevant, to allocate seating; but it is strongly urged that the approach to differences of opinion is above all pastoral and that the help and support of senior pastors is sought if and when that is helpful. In this guidance we will try to highlight sensible measures that should apply to most church situations following the latest guidance we have from Government departments and public health bodies. In addition we will provide a risk assessment template that aims to help decide if additional measures are needed, taking into account those vulnerable in a community as well as (for example) local infection rates. A clear rationale will also help with communicating why additional measures may be taken, and why these measures will vary from place to place and event to event. In every situation there is likely to be a range of feeling about risk, both to ourselves and to others, that will need to be accommodated by our churches in a way appropriate to each of them. Online and hybrid worship services have opened up opportunities in this regard and local practice at services may differ to accommodate different groups of people. This document is intended to be a first step in thinking about future practice in relation to coronavirus and public health, briefly covering a spectrum of church activities and signposting where further information can be found.  

Mary's Gardens Author: Natalie K. Watson Date: 01 June 2015 When I moved into my new house with its extensive garden, I discovered among other plants left by the previous owner one called Our Lady’s Mantle. Later I realized that this was one of a large number of plants named after and related to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Our Lady’s Bedstraw, Our Lady’s Keys, Mary’s Candle, Our Lady’s Pincushion, Marigold and Our Lady’s Thimble are among more than 500 plants with names associated with the mother of Jesus. Others are the Virgin’s Bower, Clematis Vitalba and Columbine, known as Our Lady’s Shoes. The European Wood Anemone is called Mary’s Nightcap. Olive oil is described as Virgin Oil. A number of orchid species are associated with Mary, the best known being Digitalis purpurea or Our Lady’s Glove. Plants with white spotted leaves are often associated with drops of the Virgin’s milk falling on them while nursing the Christ child. The snowdrop is also consecrated to Mary, as it is often in full bloom at Candlemas. On the day following Candlemas, in memory of her presentation of Jesus in the temple, Mary’s images were removed from the altars and replaced by scattered snowdrops. In the Middle Ages the blessing of houses, gardens, seeds, plants, trees and fields was an essential part of the sacramental tradition of the Church. Gardens were often dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. A number of medieval paintings and woodcuts depict Mary in a garden. The beauty of holiness is often symbolized by flowers and gardens. The Venerable Bede uses a lily as the emblem of the Virgin Mary with the petals as symbols of her bodily purity and the anthers as a symbol of the purity and beauty of her soul. In many parts of Europe, strawberries are considered sacred to Mary who is said to protect children when they go strawberry-picking on St John’s Day. The month of May and all plants flowering in it, roses in particular, are dedicated to Mary. Roses used to be symbols of the Roman goddess Venus and the month of May was sacred to Flora, Roman goddess of flowers and spring. The feast of the Nativity of Mary, celebrated on 8 September, was the traditional day for liturgical blessings of seeds, flowers and the crops of the coming year. The sacred flora helped to mark the cycle of the year and illustrated the story of God with humanity throughout the Church’s calendar. Many of the plant names related to Mary were no longer widely used after the Reformation, but are often still in use in more rural areas.

11

A certain Mrs Lillie of Chicago was the first to endeavour to create a modern Mary Garden in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. She planted some 50 varieties of plants whose pre-Reformation names had been related to Mary. Thus she revived a tradition which invites us to adapt it: to discover our own gardens as sacred spaces where the presence of God can be found. …………………………………………………………………………………….

The Feast of our Lady Mary 15th August

Life has its ups and its downs. When any of reflects back on our lives there will be those moments that stand out because either the sun was shining on us or not. For me it seems that our Lady Mary has been connected with so often with the sun shining in.

Strangely enough I don’t mean the Christmas story which wonderful as it is does not resonate for me in comparison with turning points in my life. I have been part of Church life from before I can remember but it was being taken to All Saints Croft one Saturday afternoon to a service organised by the Society of Mary – Vespers of Our Lady of the Marsh- that opened my life to the richness of the Christian Tradition. I suppose that it led to the development of my spirituality that understand the working of God through all things that we foolishly regard as ordinary! God as a human person given life though a normal process and worship of that gift by frail human beings in our everyday landscape.

My own mother’s love for Mary was passed on to me as we shared visits to the shrine of our Lady of Walsingham. That place in Norfolk, which is an ordinary country village but is filled with wonder around every corner. Just the joy of finding an Orthodox Church in what was the ticket office of the now disused station. ’s Nazareth is surely a reminder that God does shine through all things if only we open are heart and mind to him.

In our Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary I love the way that through the expressions of Mary as seem on the banner and in the statue it is not that the young maid of so much art but that of the mature woman – the lived in form of a human being fully alive.

At this time of weakness for the Church in our land it is good to turn our faces to the glory of God in our everyday lives and be re-energised by the

12

prayers and example of Mary. Not only to reinstated God at the centre of our lives but also in his Church and in the very land itself. If you can you are invited to join in our August Celebration of Mary on 15th August and extra to our normal pattern of worship we have a full Sunday Evensong at West Keal 6pm. May be it will be stand out moment for you too!

Blessings Fr Peter

Fran’s Bit

Do you ever find that time is running away with you?

Increasingly over the past month I have felt like I was running to catch myself up and longing for the rest that the summer holidays bring – hopefully! Today I have attended the final collective worship in Stickney Primary School, where we have said goodbye to the year 6 students. Some things never change – and yet this year it was very different because all the students in Year 4 and Year 2, and their teachers, could not be present because they are having to self-isolate. They are not the first year groups to have to do this!

It has been a difficult academic year, and all the staff at our schools are exhausted. Do you know anyone working in a school? Why not contact them and thank them for what they have achieved this year.

But don’t leave it there! What about others who have worked throughout the pandemic? Give them your thanks also.

And don’t stop there….

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Rev’d Joan’s Musings

For those of you have been interested in the exploits of Phil the Pheasant I have to report that Phil has not returned to his pheasant cave nor have I seen him sauntering across the lawn. However, a hen pheasant who might have been Philomena has been spotted with a number of chicks. She is very protective of her little ones and chased away one of the dogs who was showing an interest in her tiny family. Could these be Phil’s offspring, if so larger premises would certainly be needed. I now need to accept that Phil the pheasant has moved on and trust that he will bring delight and interest to someone else.

Moving on is of course something we all need to do at different times and in different circumstances. Youngsters leaving Primary School often have mixed feelings as they leave what is known and familiar and prepare for secondary education made scarier because of the challenge of Covid 19. Secondary School leavers moving onto College or University or the world of work. Young couples preparing for marriage or those who for a variety of reasons find relationships ending.

Bereavement brings even more moving on challenges. As a Deanery, part of Lincoln Diocese, we are faced with how we maintain our worshipping communities in this part of rural Lincolnshire. Small congregations of mainly older people who after years of dedication and commitment are feeling not a little weary but want our ancient buildings to continue to act as a signpost to God. Much has been said and written about the necessity of prayer and this is work we can all be involved in no matter how old and frail we may become. To uphold with our prayers those who have the energy and inspiration to lead us forward, to listen to God as well as speaking with Him, and to move on in faith.

The easing of lockdown has arrived just in time for the summer. However we must remain vigilant when we are out and about doing routine things. i.e. distancing and wearing of masks . It’s been difficult trying to organise outdoor things, such as a churchyard clearing up session as a group. Hopefully a slightly different approach may work better with the onset of summer and people’s holiday outings. Volunteers have come forward to help with our churchyard clear-up , so rather than pick a specific weekend I am suggesting if anyone has a spare hour or two contact me and ask what they could do.

Provided nothing changes we are intending starting the Church Coffee morning on Tuesday 3rd of August at 10.30 , alternating with the village hall which will have commenced on Tuesday the 27th of July. Please contact me on 07790214675 if you require further information.

NEW DAY

Oh! Brave, new day, your golden glory streams, Across the shadows of my troubled dreams; And waking from the endless night of fear, Into your bridge and brave new light I stare.

Oh! Brave, new day, beyond my tears, I see Your promise of a better time to be; And, holding fast that promise in my heart, Down life’s new way, with falt’ring steps I start.

Oh! Brave, new day, my glad deliverance dawn, To light and joy and freedom I’m reborn; The mem’ries of my sad and sunless days, Are fading in the brightness of your rays.

Oh! Brave, new day, that calms my darkest dread, And soothes my pain, and lights my path ahead; With shining hope you lay my fears to rest, Oh! Brave, new day, - the bravest and the best

More Musings from Rev’d Joan

As the summer term comes to an end Sports Days as we once knew them are perhaps a thing of the past. The need to keep pupil “bubbles” apart and the lack of parental involvement is perhaps a challenge to far. However, I feel I have been presented with a unique rural sports day. It began with the arrival of the male hare. He bounded into the pasture with great energy and enthusiasm. He stopped to survey the land and then, at great speed, bounded through the long grass stopping to survey his surroundings. He was closely followed by a smaller hare (difficult to know if this was Mrs Hare or a leveret). They then began a game of “catch me as you can”. The male would take a zig zag path then stop a while with just his ears visible above the grass. At this point Hare no 2 could have run in a straight line, but no, he/she followed the zig zag path of No 1 Hare. This stopping and starting continued for some time until No 1 decided he was the winner and they darted off together.

Then it was the turn of the cattle. Having visited the boundary fence of my garden to gaze soulfully in my direction, they moved down the pasture and then the fun began. A large tree was selected and then they started the race but as they were circling a tree there wasn’t a starting or finishing point. Round and round they went, faster and faster, Until they seemed to exhaust themselves. Who won that race I couldn’t hazard a guess but they seemed to have enjoyed their own special Sports Day and gave me a great deal of pleasure. There is now a sturdy bull, ring in his nose, chin on the fence staring in my direction so perhaps I should say hello.

Verses for All

‘I don’t usually read poetry, but I would read this,’ the woman said. I was truly delighted, ‘cos that’s what’s in my head! I want to write the way I feel; I don’t want clever I just want real! I want to share my feelings, I hope you’ll do the same, my verses are not ‘works of art’ - but they’re important just the same! They’re a way I can express the inner part of me; they help me see the bigger picture, that I don’t always see. I hope that other people will read them and then think, If words can be written simply, I need not shy away - perhaps instead of worrying, I’ll write a verse today!

However you choose to explore the picturesque towns and villages of the Lincolnshire Countryside why not make it part of a day supporting the Lincolnshire Churches Trust Ride & Stride event on th Saturday 11 September 2021.

The ethos of the L.C.T. is to ‘assist in the preservation and repair of churches and chapels’ within the county of Lincolnshire. They offer grants to places of worship to enable these important works to go ahead.

The aim of the event is to raise funds, though sponsorship and associated Gift Aided donations, to allow them to support as many applicants as possible.

Participants are encouraged to make visits to churches and chapels as part of their ‘day out’, many of which will be open and happy to welcome you with a smile, refreshments and send you on your merry way, having signed your sponsorship form, with a cheery wave and their thanks.

Sponsorship forms and a list of participating churches will be available via your local parish church, event organiser, or I will be able to get some to you via email or post if you would like to make contact: Christine King (Bolingbroke Deanery organiser) Email: [email protected]

All Welcome

Wild Earth Walking

We walk, my friend and I, to connect to our beautiful planet home and we walk to connect with each other. Over four years we have walked into our friendship, weaving intimate ties with each other and the Earth. We are passionate about lovers of the more-than-human world, delighting in all our senses, from the dipping flight of Woodpecker to the primal screech of Raven, the purple shock of Orchid to the enticing green of the Hart’s Tongue path, from the giddy scent of Elderflower to the Banded Demoiselles, iridescent marvels above the murmuring stream.

Season into season we walk, eating the wild as we go. Crossing the stream in the rain and singing to Wild Garlic as we delicately pick each leaf, nibbling Hawthorn leaves straight from the tree, picking Nettle seeds that might shock our mouth or gathering Blackberries under the big bright blue.

The thrill of a rare glimpse of Monkshood, or the shock of cold water as we take a dip, our bodies vibrant and thrumming.

And this year we guided our first Wild Earth Walk, to share our joy of walking and hoping to inspire others to notice the magic all around and our intimate connection to the whole Web of Life. And we walk to find the wild inside. Wild Earth Walking – Amanda Griffiths 2017 26
