Hamburger, heavy hitters sink Clippers

Rochester Red Wings– 4/30/15

The Rochester Red Wings racked up a season-high 17 hits to back starter Mark Hamburger, in an 8-4 win over the Columbus Clippers Thursday afternoon at Frontier Field. The Clippers got on the scoreboard early against Hamburger. With one out, Tyler Holt reached second on a dropped fly ball hit to right fielder Danny Ortiz. James Ramsey's double brought in Holt for a 1-0 Columbus lead. The Wings made a bid to tie the score in their half of the first against Jordan Cooper, when Aaron Hicks led off with a bunt base hit. The hit extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Reynaldo Rodriguez added a single, but Cooper escaped the scoring threat. Columbus added a run in the second to make it 2-0, on a triple from Michael Martinez. Ortiz made a leaping attempt to catch the ball at the top of the fence, but was unable to make the play.

Eric Fryer and James Beresford singled to open the bottom of the second, and Argenis Diaz followed with a single. Fryer scored when left fielder Destin Hood made an error picking up the ball hit by Diaz. The Wings then tied it on a throwing error and it was a 2-2 game after two innings. The Clippers went ahead 3-2 in the third, on an RBI single by Zach Walters. Fryer tied up the game again with his RBI single in the Wings' half of the third, bringing in Eddie Rosario. Through three innings, the Wings had out-hit Columbus 7-4. With two outs in the fourth, Hicks and Eric Farris hit back-to-back singles which prompted Cooper's exit from the game. Kyle Crockett came on and gave up an RBI single to Rosario, giving the Wings the lead for the first time in the game. Rosario's hit was his second of the game, and the 10th by the Wings. Cooper (0-1) was tagged for nine hits and four runs (three earned) in 3 2/3 innings, striking out one. He threw 72 pitches, 52 for strikes. Hamburger (1-1) settled into a groove after the third inning, allowing just a single over the fourth and fifth innings. The Red Wings picked up four more runs in the fifth inning, with Diaz, Farris, Rosario, and Rodriguez contributing RBI hits. Hamburger completed six innings for the first time this season, and he did it with some flair in the sixth: a lead-off walk, a strikeout, another walk, then a pair of strikeouts to run his total to six for the game. He allowed five hits and three runs (two earned), and walked three. Hamburger threw 110 pitches, 65 for strikes. Lester Oliveros took over for Hamburger to start the seventh inning. Oliveros dug himself a hole in the eighth, as his second walk of the inning loaded the bases with two outs. Pinch-hitter Jesus Aguilar lined a single to bring in a run and make the score 8-4. But Oliveros struck out Michael Martinez to leave the bases loaded. Ryan O'Rourke worked the ninth, allowing a walk and striking out one. Seven Red Wings had at least two hits in the game, as the Wings out-hit Columbus 17-7.

Wings’ Eric Fryer making sure the Twins can’t forget him

Rochester Democrat & Chronicle– 4/30/15

As you grow older, as you experience the ups and downs of pro ball, you tend to mellow a bit. Rather than get stuck in the moment and worry only about how a decision impacts life today, you're able to step back and see the big picture. That's why when the Minnesota Twins sliced catcher Eric Fryer off their 40-man major-league roster, the veteran catcher didn't throw a fit or adopt an "I'll show you" mantra for the 2015 season with the Rochester Red Wings. "I think when I was younger I might have tried to do something like that," Fryer, 29, said. "But as you get older, if you try to do too much, often times it goes against you." Besides, he had been warned. The Twins said there might not be room on the 40-man before they deleted him on Dec. 23.

10

"Was I disappointed? Maybe a little bit," he said, "but they told me before I signed there was a chance I would come off so I wasn't shocked or anything; I wasn't discouraged. "I knew going in I'd have to perform anyway to get back up there so that's what I'm trying to do." Even if "I'll show you" isn't his rallying cry, but he's doing just that. Fryer collected two more hits on Thursday afternoon — part of a 17-hit barrage by the Wings — in an 8-4 victory over the Columbus Clippers at Frontier Field. With catcher Josmil Pinto back in Rochester, Fryer has been in a backup role. He has played in only seven games but has maintained a hot bat. His two singles in four at-bats on Thursday kept his average at .500 (10-for-20) with five RBIs. "I've tried to simplify my approach a lot," he said. "At times in the past I've been over-swinging and chasing too much and now it's just, trying to get the barrel on the ball too much." Staying in the groove when you only start once every four or five games isn't easy, but so far the Columbus, Ohio, native has succeeded. "He's been fantastic, hasn't he," Wings manager Mike Quade said. "Fry's defense is well-known in the organization. He can flat-out catch. And if the bat continues to do well, who knows." Quade is new to the Twins, coming to the organization as Wings manager in December. He has quickly learned his players though. He knew Fryer wasn't going to be pouting about coming off Minnesota's roster. "I think he'd be happy to play if he was going to play in a seventh-grade game," Quade said. Fryer's first hit on Thursday came leading off what became a two-run second inning. His second single drove home a run in the third and successive singles by Aaron Hicks, Eric Farris and Eddie Rosario gave the Wings a 4-3 lead in the fourth. A four-run fifth inning extended the lead to 8-3 and was more than enough support for Mark Hamburger (1-1). He pitched six innings, allowing five hits while throwing 110 pitches. "I'm not really a pitch-count guy," Hamburger said.

Chattanooga Lookouts back home but lose again

Chattanooga Times Free Press– 4/30/15

The Chattanooga Lookouts have not faced the most balanced schedule this season. Thursday marked just the fourth night in which Chattanooga has hosted a Southern League foe at AT&T Field, as the Lookouts opened a 10-game homestand with a 6-4 loss to the Jacksonville Suns. Chattanooga played 15 of its first 20 games on the road and had two of its first five home games rained out, with one rescheduled in a doubleheader. "We've been in a hotel a lot, and it's good to be back on our home field," Lookouts catcher Stuart Turner said before the game. "Now we've got 10 games at home, and we've got to settle into a routine." The Suns broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning when Ryan Rieger and Sharif Othman had RBI singles at the expense of Lookouts relief pitcher Nick Burdi. The Lookouts fell to 9-11. Chattanooga's early-season schedule is somewhat normal compared to other league teams. The Suns entered Thursday having played their first 19 games at home. Jacksonville was scheduled to play 10 at home and then five in Biloxi, but Biloxi's new park will not be ready until early June, so the Shuckers are playing their first 55 games on the road. "It doesn't matter as far as we're concerned," Lookouts manager Doug Mientkiewicz said. "You play an equal amount at home as you do on the road, and I know one time in Triple-A, Sacramento was building their park and those guys spent something like the first 65 on the road. It just means we've got more games at home later on down the year, which is actually better off than the other way around." Chattanooga was 6-3 after its abbreviated first homestand but then went 3-7 on the road. "We've got a long way to go and a lot of work to do," Mientkiewicz said. "It's still early, and guys are finding roles. We'll get better throughout the summer, and we'll just keep grinding and keep teaching them to play the game right. They've got talent, which is a good thing, and they'll figure it out."

11

Said first baseman Dalton Hicks: "Hopefully we learned a lot. It's still early, and hopefully we can still come together as a team and work out the kinks that we do have. We get on fire here soon, and playing at home should help." Tyler Duffey (0-2, 3.16 ERA) is the Lookouts' scheduled pitcher for tonight's 7:15 game, with Jake Esch (2-0, 0.00) scheduled for the Suns.

Hu earns third win, Miracle pinch Crabs, 5-3, in series opener

Fort Myers Miracle– 4/30/15

FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 30, 2015) - Chih-Wei Hu tossed six solid inning with eight strikeouts in a 5-3 series opening win for the Fort Myers Miracle over the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Thursday night at Hammond Stadium.

The Miracle gave Hu (3-0) an early lead in the first by scoring a run without getting a hit. On a rehabilitation assignment for a mild back strain, Charlotte starter Enny Romero began the game with a five-pitch walk to Engelb Vielma. With Aderling Mejia at the plate, Vielma swiped second base. Romero then walked Mejia. Niko Goodrum advanced the runners to second and third with a ground out to the right side. Mitch Garver steped up and lifted a fly ball to left field. Marty Gantt made the catch, but Vielma raced in to open the scoring, 1-0.

In the top of the second, the Stone Crabs answered with an unearned run against Hu. Jake Bauers led off with a walk, just the second issued by Hu all season. Joey Rickard struck out, but Juniel Querecuto singled to put runners at first and second. Armando Araiza then hit a slow bouncing ball to short that kicked off Vielma's shin and into the outfield. Bauers scored on the error.

With two in scoring position and one out, Hu rallied to retire Mike Marjama on a fly out to right and struck out Yoel Araujo to end the inning.

Tied 1-1, the Miracle broke away with three runs in the third against Charlotte reliever German Marquez. Mejia led off with a looping base hit into left. Goodrum fell behind in the count, 0-2, but raked a pitch over the wall in right field for a two-run homer. His third of the season, Goodrum's blast went 366 feet. Up 3-1, the Miracle added another run. Garver coaxed a walk to continue the frame. After Bryan Haar flew out to right, Alex Swim hit into a fielder's choice that retired Garver at second base.

With two outs, Chad Christensen kept the Miracle alive in the inning with a base hit to left. A passed ball moved Swim to third and Christensen to second while Logan Wade reached on a walk. With the bases loaded and Jason Kanzler at the plate, Marquez delivered a high fastball that sailed over catcher Armando Araiza's glove and Swim scored on the wild pitch, 4-1.

Charlotte sliced a run off the lead and Hu in the fifth. Marjama and Araujo worked back-to-back singles. Hu got Gantt to fly out to left, but surrendered an RBI single to Kean Wong through the right side. Another instance where the Stone Crabs had two on with one out, Hu worked out of the jam by getting Willy Adames to pop up behind home plate and Bauers to roll out to short.

Hu finished his night with a 1-2-3 sixth inning including his eighth and final strikeout. Hu walked two and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with 105 pitches thrown, 63 for strikes.

Todd Van Steensel entered out of the Miracle pen in the seventh and continue the trend of missing Charlotte bats. Van Steensel fanned four in two innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Miracle added an insurance run. Kanzler led off with a hustle double into left center then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Vielma. Mejia hit a soft fly into left field that was caught by Gantt, but Kanzler sped home to push the Miracle lead to 5- 2.

J.T. Chargois emerged from the bullpen to close the door in the ninth. Chargois immediately ran into difficulty when Haar could not handle a throw from Goodrum on the first hitter of the inning. Marjama followed with a broken bat single into right field. Chargois got Araujo to fly to right for the first out, but issued a walk to Gantt to load the bases.

Wong then hit a slow rolling ball to Vielma on an 0-2 pitch. Vielma retired the lead runner at second while a run scored to cut the Miracle lead to a pair of runs, 5-3. Chargois faced Adames with the tying runs in scoring position after Wong stole second. On a 3-2 pitch, Chargois struck out Adames to end the game and record in second save of the season.

The Miracle (8-13) now head to Charlotte Sports Park for the next two games of the series with the Stone Crabs (14-7). Friday night's game 12

starts at 6:30 p.m. and fans can listen on www.miraclebaseball.com with the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman. The MiracleBaseball.com pregame show begins at 6:05 p.m.

Sano homers, impresses hitting coach

MiLB.com– 5/1/15

As Miguel Sano grows as a ballplayer, trying hard to do less is a tough trick to master. After some extra work with Lookouts hitting coach Chad Allen on Thursday, the Twins' No. 2 prospect is starting to get the hang of it. Sano then delivered his fourth homer, but more importantly to Allen, he showed a better approach in his four plate appearances as Double-A Chattanooga lost a back-and-forth contest to Jacksonville, 6-4. The 12th-ranked prospect on MLB.com's Top 100 list finished 1-for-3 with the home run, a walk and two strikeouts. Minnesota's top prospect, Byron Buxton, went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run, a walk and two stolen bases. Sano missed all of 2014 with an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery, and he's struggled early on with the Lookouts. Through 18 games, Sano is hitting .159 with 22 strikeouts. Allen said the 21-year-old has been pressing in the early going. He and Sano spent 45 minutes Thursday working to "let the game come to him" at the plate. "Early in the year, he's really tried to do too much," Allen said. "He's got a lot of strength and everybody that faces him knows he's a strong man and can hit the ball a long way. At the same time, he himself is trying to do too much. "We hit early today and just really tried to slow him down and let the ball come to him. Let him understand he doesn't have to exert himself just to hit the ball hard." Sano didn't deploy the relaxed approach perfectly, but his sixth-inning homer was a key step in the right direction, said Allen. "Tonight was a great judgment on what he was thinking, that he wasn't trying to do too much," his coach said. "He took an 80-percent swing with two strikes on a fastball in and hit a home run. It's just a matter of him relaxing, calming down a bit and letting the game come to him." Though the homer was his only hit, Sano showed better pitch selection, per Allen. He took some borderline pitches when the count mandated it and quieted his swing mechanically.

14

"Today, he was just swinging 70 percent [in batting practice], just trying to stay behind the ball," he said. "In one at-bat today, that really came out. Hopefully in the next couple of days, it'll be two, three, four at-bats where he can relax and let the ball come to him. Then he'll get hot like everybody knows he can." Sano has a reputation as a cheerful and energetic guy. Allen thinks his confident personality will help him climb out of the hole he's dug himself early in 2015, but did say he's seen the Dominican Republic product lose a touch of that swagger at times in April. "Miggy is a very upbeat guy," Allen said. "At the same time, he's very competitive. Every baseball player who has ever played the game has gone through struggles. The best way to come out of those struggles is to not drag your head and worry. That's a hard, hard thing for every player to learn. "Miggy's a very upbeat person. Through this, he has had some times that he's been down. He came out today and was smiling, though." While Sano works to get above the Mendoza line, Buxton is showing signs that he's cured what ailed him early in the season. Like Sano, Buxton got off to a slow start in 2015, batting .190 through his first 15 games. The outfielder has hit safely in four straight games, lifting his average to .236. Buxton has also stolen bases in four straight games as well. "I think with Buxton, just like with Miggy, both of those guys started off pretty slow," Allen said. "Neither one of them is even close to where they want to be. "Buxton, he's a quick learner. He's always asking questions, just like Miggy. They're both great kids. … They're tremendous talents. They want to learn. They're the kind of guys you want. They want to learn, get as much knowledge about the game as they can. Both of them are going to get it."
