23/05/93 / PHOLA PARK - IFP Branch Secretary, Mrs Julia Mtshali, (173 Zuma Section) was kidnapped by alleged ANC supporters. Mrs Mtshali's remains were recovered in Phola Park on Thursday, May 27 1993. Mrs Mtshali had been necklaced.

The IFP was alerted to the whereabouts of the remains of Mrs Mtshali, by reading a newspaper article in 'The Star" on May 25 1993, which included a photograph of the necklacing and stated that "The men in the crowd grinned as they explained that the woman - believed to be an Inkatha office-bearer from Kwesine Section - had been kidnapped from the nearby hostel, dragged back to the squatter camp and murdered". Further on the article states, "A young man took a spear, poked the flaming body, and put the flesh in a cup. "Muti", he explained with a shrug."

The IFP leadership in the area, who at this stage were still searching for Mrs Mtshali, was highly disturbed in the method of notification of Mrs Mtshali’s death. In the search for Mrs Mtshali's remains, the IFP had to contact the journalist, Ms Bronwyn Wilkinson, to ascertain where the photograph of Mrs Mtshali was taken.

23/05/93 CROSSROADS - IFP supporters were attacked in the Crossroads area near Katlehong. Seventeen shacks were set alight in the attack. Three persons were also killed in the attack.

23/05/93 ESHOWE / GF7INRH A - A meeting was called by IFP leaders to discuss methods to difuse tensions and how to deal with the growing refugee crisis in the area. The gathering was addressed by the local Inkosi Bantshana Zulu; Prince Gideon Zulu, a member of the Zulu Royal family and a IFP Central Committee member, and IFP Central Committee Executive member, Mr Maurice Mackenzie.

This meeting follows the murders of at least nine (9) IFP activists in the area during the past ten days. At the start of the meeting at 13h00 a nearby shack was set alight. The SAP and SADF were called in to extinguish the fire.

At 16h00 gunmen opened fire on the hall where the meeting was held and killed IFPYB member, Mr Sabelo Makwayo Ngubane. IFP supporter, Mr Mbikiseni Mthembu, was also shot and injured. These gunmen fled in a vehicle with a Swazi registration number. It is alleged that these attackers were ANC supporters.

23/05/93 BHOBOYI - The predominantly IFP supporting community was attacked by alleged ANC supporters. It is believed that two of the attackers were killed. In another attack near Sister John's High School, another attacker was killed.

23/05/93 KWAMAKUTHA - 15h3n The homestead of IFP member, Mr Nzimande, was attacked by alleged ANC supporters armed with AK-47 assault rifles. IFP members, Mr Zwe Nzimande (55) and Lindelani Raphael Nzimande (30), were shot and killed. One of the attackers was also killed.

23/05/93 EMPANGENI / KWAMTHETHWA (NGHAHA WARD) - 18h30 The house of IFP member, Mr Enock Mataba, was set alight and destroyed by alleged ANC supporters.

23/05/93 PORT SHEPSTQNE / EZINGOI WFNI - The shop of IFP member, Mr Sithombe Ngcobo, was attacked by unidentified persons. Shots were also fired at Mr Cele (a security guard). Mr Cele was shot and later died in hospital.

24/05/93 KATLEHONG - Three IFP supporters were killed in Sali Section.

107 24/05/93 OKHAHLAMBA / WEMBEZI - Alleged ANC supporters attacked IFP members in a taxi on their way to work in Nkwezela section. IFP members. Mr Pius Dlamini (House no. 246) and Mr Bethwell Mbongwa (House no. 157), were shot and killed. Fifteen (15) spent AK-47 cartridges were found at the scene.

Five IFP members were also injured in the attack. The names of the injured are: Sidumo Sithole, Nelisiwe Gumede (27), Nancy Mlaba, Bheki Mnguni and Nqinani Mthalane.

27/05/93 EMPANGENI / MATSHANA-SIGISI WARD - 18h30 IFP Vice-Chairperson for Sigisi ward, Mr Zakhele Phineas Luthuli (46), was shot and killed, whilst on his way to visit his neighbour, IFP Youth Brigade leader, Ms Doris Ngobese.

It is alleged that Mr Luthuli’s name is the first to appear on an alleged ANC hit-list of local IFP leaders which was circulated recently.

27/05/93 SEBOKENft - The vehicle in which IFP Sebokeng Zone 7 Organiser, Mr Ishmael Bojosi, and IFP member, Mr Nhlanhla Cindi, were travelling, was fired at in Sebokeng. Mr Bojosi was shot and injured in the attack and passed away in hospital the morning of 28/05/93.

27/05/93 TIG AN E - 15hnn Shots were fired at IFP members and supporters returning from Hartbeesfontein. The IFP was using the only save entry into Tigane, as attacks made it impossible to use the other entry into Tigane. Shots were fired at the vehicles from the surrounding hills. No injuries were reported.

28/05/93 EMPANGENI / SlfilRI - IFP supporter, Mr Bheki Ngobese (28), was shot and killed and the daughter of the late Mr Mdunge was injured in an attack by unidentified assailants.

28/05/93 ONGOYE / ESIKHAWNINI - 21h30 IFP member, Mr Zebron Dlamini, was stabbed to death by unidentified assailants.

29/05/93 EMPANGENI / NGWELEZANE WARD 2 - IFP supporter, Mr Mkhize, was stabbed to death by unidentified assailants.

29/05/93 HLANGANANI / HOPEWELL - 08h00 The house of IFP member, Mr Mngabi, was again attacked (see 22/05/93), by alleged ANC supporters. In the attack four IFP members, Marcus Makhanya (IFP Youth Brigade Chairperson) (26), Sibongile Mbhele (17), and twin sisters, Zandile Nomusa and Zanele Sdudla Mngadi (17), were shot, stabbed and burnt to death.

Ten-year-old Sandile Ndlovu who was in the house at the time, but survived the attack, was able to identify the attackers as well-known ANC members.

The persons killed were part of a group of nearly 200 refugees who returned to their rebuild their homes after nearly three months of negotiations.

29/05/93 TIGANE - 14h4S The houses of IFP members and supporters were stoned by alleged ANC members and supporters, who were returning from a funeral. Nine houses were stoned and set alight. The SAP allegedly did not effectively monitor the funeral and left before the funeral finished. The SAP also did not respond to calls from IFP members that an attack was taking place.

29/05/93 OSIZWENI - 17h15 The house of IFP member, Mr Zulu (house no. 1314), was petrol bombed by unidentified persons. Hlengiwe Zulu (15) and Thembile Zulu (1), were stabbed and injured when they were trying to escape (CR188/05/93)

01/06/93 NDWEDWE / KWAWOSIYANA - 21h30 IFP Treasurer, Mr Ndabazini Nzama, was shot and killed by members of the Internal Stability Unit. Mr Nzama refused these persons entry into his house, as they were unable to sufficiently identify themselves as bona fide SAP members. Residents in the area are extremely wary about opening their doors to strangers, particularly after nightfall, because they fear attack by assailants wearing security force uniforms.

After receiving no response, the ISU patrol kicked the door down and without warning, opened fire, killing Mr Nzama instantly, and seriously wounding his son, Oswell. They allegedly proceeded to ransack Mr Nzama s house and an undisclosed sum of cash and licensed firearms were removed.

The ISU patrol reported the incident to the Ndwedwe police station only after the attack occurred and claimed they had discovered tow AK-47 assault rifles in Nzama's yard (neither of which were produced or seen by Ndwedwe police). They justified the killing of Mr Nzama by claiming he had "offered violent resistance". Yet upon arriving at the scene, members of the KwaZulu Police found 150 empty R5 and R1 cartridges.

02/06/93 HLANGANANI / CURRIESBROQK - 08h00 The house of IFP member, Mr Mbhele, was attacked by alleged ANC supporters armed with firearms. Nduna Mbhele (62), Bongumusa Mbhele (16) and Nobuhle Mbhele (3), were shot and killed and six other persons were injured. The names of the injured are: Balungile Nzimande (20), Thandekile Mbhele (11), Nomfundo Mbhele (9) and Musawenkosi Mbhele. Two houses (Mr Mbhele's and Mr Dlamini's) and Mr Mbhele's vehicle were also set alight.

03/06/93 KWAMAKUTHA - 18hSS IFP members, repairing a puncture in the wheel of their vehicle, were attacked by unidentified assailants armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. IFP member, Mr Eric Mthembu (55), and his wife, Remegia Mthembu (55), were shot and killed. Spent AK-47 assault rifle cartridges were found at the scene.

04/06/93 OKHAHLAMBA / NTABAMHLOPF - The homestead of IFP member, Mr Hadebe, was attacked by unidentified assailants.

05/06/93 TIGANF - The shack of an IFP supporter, whose house had been set alight the previous week, was set alight be five alleged ANC supporters. It is alleged that ANC supporting neighbours had demanded that this IFP supporter leave the area.

05/06/93 IPELEGENG - IFP Youth Brigade Chairperson, Mr Paul Dintoe (17), was stabbed and set alight by alleged ANC supporters. Mr Dintoe had been abducted from his home earlier the day. Mr Dintoe’s body was discovered on 06/06/93 near an old mine.

05/06/93 OKHAHLAMBA / WEMBEZI - Four combis transporting IFP supporters to Ntabamhlophe were stoned by alleged ANC supporters. The damaged taxis belonged to: Mr Mthulini Mazibuko, Mr Mayisela and Mr Nhlanhla Dlamini.

07/06/93 UMLAZl - 07h00 Two IFP members, on their way to work at Prince Mshiyeni hospital, were attacked by unidentified assailants travelling in a vehicle. IFP member, Mr Zwelibanzi Elias Mkhize (16), was shot and killed. Mr Nhlanhla Cele managed to escape.

07/06/93 UMLAZl - 07h30 IFP member, Mr Mandlenkosi Khwela (39), was shot and killed whilst on his way to work in at Prospecton.

07/06/93 OKHAHLAMBA / WEMBEZI - 06h00 IFP supporters on their way to work were attacked by unidentified gunmen. Mr Amon Sesi Magubane and Mr Jabulani Hadebe (30), were injured in the attack. Mr Hadebe later died in hospital.

08/06/93 MERAFE - During a SAP search of Merafe Hostel, furniture was destroyed and a large amount of money was stolen.

10/06/93 LADYSMITH / EZAKHENI - IFP councillor, Mr M.P. Basi (56), was shot and killed by alleged ANC supporters. These persons stoned Mr Basi as he was walking in E-Section and then also fired several shots at him.

10/06/93 - The burnt body of IFP member, Mr Silwane Mlangeni, (previously abducted from Katlehong) was recovered.

11/06/93 LADYSMITH / EZAKHENI - The house of IFP councillor, Mr S.R. Sithebe, was set alight by alleged ANC supporters.

12/06/93 LADYSMITH / EZAKHENI - The house of IFP councillor, Mr A. Hadebe, was set alight by unidentified assailants.

12/06/93 CROSSROADS - IFP members, Miss Gloria Cynthia Sibiya and Mr Sibangani Ntombela, were shot and killed in separate incidents by unidentified assailants.

12/06/93 THOKOZA- IFP member, Mr Esau Mbatha, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.

12/06/93 EVATON - IFP Sebokeng Zone 7 Organiser, Mr Ishmael Bojosi, (see 27/05/93), was buried at the Evaton Cemetery. It was previously agreed by all parties in the Local Peace Committee, that the funeral would be held on 12/06/93 and also the IFP also agreed not to hold a night vigil in Sebokeng Zone 7, due to political instability in the area.

When mourners were about to leave the Evaton Cemetery, a large group of alleged ANC supporters gathered at the entrance. It is alleged that ANC Chairperson and a participant in the Local Peace Committee, Mr Watch Mothibedi, was also present. The situation was defused and the mourners left the cemetery peacefully.

Ill At approximately 15h00 IFP members and supporters were informed that the body of Mr Bojosi had been exhumed and was being set alight. These persons went to the cemetery and found that the SAP were already present. One suspect had already been arrested.

13/06/93 HLANGANANI / CABAZINI - 16h00 The vehicle in which IFP Webstown Branch Chairperson, Mr Ethelbert Malinga, was travelling was ambushed by unidentified assailants armed with AK-47 assault rifles. IFP member, Mr Zenzele Ngwenya, was shot and killed, (see 22/05/93)

13/06/93 HLANGANANI / WEBSTOWN - 16h30 The house of IFP leader, Mr Ethelbert Malinga, (also see 22/05/93 and 13/06/93) was attacked by unidentified assailants. Mr Malinga's house and his other vehicle was set alight. The house and vehicle of IFP supporter, Mr Mtaka, was also set alight.

15/06/93 OKHAHLAMBA / WEMBEZI - 05h30 IFP members and supporters on their way to work in a taxi were attacked by alleged ANC supporters armed with AK-47 assault rifles. The driver, Mr Mkhosi Ndaba, was shot in the hand.

15/06/93 KATLEHONG - The burnt body of IFP member, Mrs Nomanisiti Ntuli, was recovered.

16/06/93 - 14h30 IFP members travelling in a taxi and returning from a commemoration service at Vosloorus were attacked by alleged ANC supporters armed with axes, stones and firearms. The IFP members fled and the combi (PBN 486 T) was also set alight. Four IFP members, Mr Mandla Mchunu, Mr Themba Thango, Mr Jeremiah Mtshali and Mr Sipho Sibrya were injured. The body of IFP branch committee member (Monise), Mr Alpheus Falendoda Buthelezi (30), who was also in the taxi, was recovered the following day. (CR176/06/93)

16/06/93 FOLWENI / ENSIMBINI - 10h30 IFP supporter, Mr Jabulani Constance Khwela (25), was stabbed to death by alleged ANC supporters.

18/06/93 EMPANGENI / KWAMTHETHWA (GCOBA WARD) - 12h30 Three IFP supporters, Ntombiza Hadebe, Vincent S. Gumede and Elijah Msane, were shot and killed in an ambush by alleged ANC supporters.

18/06/93 GREYTOWN - IFP member, Mr Wanda Ximba (21), was stabbed to death by alleged ANC supporters. Mr Ximba was residing at the Nhlalakahle hostel, as he was forced to move from the .

18/06/93 HLANGANANI / PATHENI - 18h00 Alleged ANC supporters attacked IFP supporters returning from work on a truck to Patheni. Three IFP members, Qondeni Zungu (57), Zothini Zungu (20) and Patience Mpilo (49), were shot and killed. Three IFP members, including the driver, Mr Rob Garmel, were shot and injured. The names of the two other injured are: Nikani Mkhize and Lungisile Basi (16). The firearms used in the attack were identified as AK- 47 assault rifles and R4 rifles.

20/06/93 OKHAHLAMBA / WEMBEZI -11 h30 IFP branch committee member (Emahhashini), Mr Mandla Mtshali, was shot and killed and IFP member, Mr Khanyile, was injured in and attack by unidentified assailants. Mr Mtshali and Mr Khanyile were shot with AK-47 assault rifles next to the Masonite factory gate when they returned for work.

113 The same attackers proceeded to the house of Mr Sibiya (see 26/06/93). Mr Sibiya’s house was petrol bombed and the house and garage were destroyed. Mr Sibiya was also attacked and wounded when he was struck over the head with a sharp object.

28/06/93 KWAMAKUTHA / EMKHAZINI - The home of IFP supporter, Mr Ncube, was attacked by unidentified assailants. Mr Ncube was injured in the attack.

29/06/93 - ANC member, Mr Michael Phama (45), was convicted in the Rand Supreme Court on twenty-one (21) counts of murder and 14 of attempted murder arising from three separate shootings, including the massacre of sixteen (16) predominantly IFP members and supporters on 08 September 1991 and the mini­ bus attack which killed four (4) IFP members on 28 February 1992.

30/06/93 HLANGANANI / EMAWENI - 09h00 A group of alleged ANC supporters set twenty-five houses alight. The names of some of the IFP supporters whose houses were set alight are: Christopher Dlamini, Petros Miya, Nxanga Miya, Mgidli Ngcobo, Khehla Ngcobo, Clementina Chiya, Macanana Duma, Mbuzo Miya, Mr Ngcobo, Zakhele Duma, Sithuthu Hlongwa, Albert Hadebe, Mnyezane Miya, Madoda Ngcobo, Aldwina Dlungwane, Mzinjani Dlamini, Jackson Dlamini, Makhehla Magoma and Mr Memela.

Shots were also fired and IFP supporters, Zakhele Duma (50) and Sibonakaliso Msomi (20), were injured.

30/06/93 HLANGANANI / EMAWENI - 16h40 The houses of four IFP supporters were set alight by unidentified assailants. The names of the supporters are: Mr Nyanisa, Mr Hlangu, Mr Ntenza and Mr Latha. One IFP member, Mr Mqumbe Miya, was shot and injured in the attack.

02/07/93 UMGABABA - Two men were killed and five were injured, after being sentenced by a "People's Court".

03/07/93 KATLEHONIfi - Three IFP supporters, Roger Ntombela, Bhekizile Ntombela and Nkosikhona Ntombela, from Ncala bectjon, Katlehong were shot and injured whilst on their way to Katlehong from Thokoza. Shots were fired at them from the Mapazela School. All three were admitted to hospital.

03/07/93 KATLEHONG - Three IFP members, Mzimbeni Buthelezi, Mfanyani Buthelezi and Maduks Buthelezi, were attacked at Stanley Motors/Chicken Farms, situated between Mandela Park and Group 72. These brothers were searching for the body of their father who was reportedly killed in the area. They managed to locate their fathers body and they were then attacked by unidentified assailants. Mr Mzimbeni Buthelezi was shot and Killed and his two brothers were seriously injured.

03/07/93 KATLEHONG - A Zulu-speaking person (political affiliation, if any, unknown), was pulled out of a taxi at the BP Garaqe Schoeman Street, and set alight.

It is reported that three unknown persons arrived at Mr Masenya's house searching for him. When they entered the house, they opened fire at the persons inside. Mr Masenya was shot and killed and nine other persons were injured. (CR56/07/93) »

04/07/93 MONTQBFI I O - The houses of three IFP members, Induna Thokozani Luthuli, Mr Mandla Malinga (IFP Chairperson), and Mr Ngubane, were set alight by unidentified assailants. This attack occurred after the inauguration of an IFP branch (also see 03/07/93).

04/07/93 TEMBISA - IFP Branch Deputy-Secretary (Emangweni branch), Mr Patrick Khanyile, was shot and killed by unidentified persons outside his house.

04-05/07/93 THOKOZA - 23h30/00h3Q/01h15 Approximately fifty (50) unidentified assailants attacked the predominantly IFP supporting Thokoza 2 and 3 hostels. These attackers were armed with AK-47 assault rifles and hand grenades. The attack started at 23h30 and lasted until 00h15. One of the attackers was shot and killed inside a hostel. Three IFP members were wounded in the attack.

At 00h30 a vehicle driving in Khumalo Street fired at the Thokoza hostels. At 01 hi 5 two vehicles (a white Ford Cortina and yellow and white VW Minibus) coming from the Alberton side fired at the hostels and houses in the area. These vehicles were later found set alight.

05/07/93 KATLEHONH - Three IFP supporters, two men and a women, were necklaced by alleged ANC supporters. The crowd of approximately twenty persons armed with spears, axes and stones gathered round the three burning bodies lying behind refuse bins. These persons chanted, "Sizitholile Izinja. Siyazitshisa" (We found the dogs and we are burning them) and "Viva ANC Viva - Long live the African National Congress”.***

05/07/93 KATLEHONft - IFP members and supporters reported continuous incidents of harassment and assault whilst using public transport. Reports indicate that these incidents are directed at Zulu-speaking persons. Due to continuous attacks on train lines and train being set alight, Zulu-speaking commuters are forced to risk their lives on taxis or stay at home.

06/07/93 KWAMAKUTHA / EMKHAZINI - 70hnn The house of IFP member, Mr Makhafula Khuzwayo, was set alight by unidentified assailants. The attack occurred after an IFP meeting in the area. No arrests have been reported.

06/07/93 OKHAHLAMBA / WEMBEZI - n8h00 IFP Chairperson, Mr Gqiba Bonginkosi Sithole, was shot and killed by alleged ANC supporters. Mr Sithoie, who was also a member of the Local Peace Committee, had been ambushed by three gunmen armed with AK-47 assault rifles.

06/07/93 NSELENI / SOMOPHO - IFP member, Mr Nhlanhla Mathonsi (22), was shot and stabbed to death by unidentified assailants.

07/07/93 EZAKHENI - nhOO A group of approximately 50 - 100 men arrived at the KwaZulu bus terminal and demanded that the three IFP representatives from C-Section, who were there on business, come out of the building. The three representatives, Mr Simon Hlatshwayo (60), Mr Simon Dubezane (32), Mr Vusi Mbuli (41), told the workers present to hide. The group of men outside the building then started shooting with AK-47 assault rifles.

Mr Hlatshwayo returned fire and shot and injured two of the attackers.

116 08/07/93 KATLEHONG - Mr Johannes Sithole was abducted by alleged ANC youths when he was walking from his house (285 Hadebe Section) to a nearby shop. Mr Sithole's body was later recovered by his daughter, Ms Mbali Sithole, at the Government Mortuary. Mr Sithole had been hacked and set alight.

09/07/93 OZWATHINI / MATHULINI WARD - 10h00 IFP members were attacked by alleged ANC supporters. IFP supporter, Mr Bhekuthula Hlongwa, was shot and killed in the attack.

09/07/93 SASOLBURG - IFP supporter, Mr Victor Kheswa, was killed in police custody. Mr Kheswa was arrested after his appeal on a firearms charged failed. Mr Kheswa was arrested whilst consulting his attorney in Johannesburg. The death of Mr Kheswa follows on a large number of incidents in the Vaal Triangle where members of the SAP have been accused of assaulting persons arrested and taking forced statements from them. Three SAP members have been suspended until further investigation.

10/07/93 PORT SHEPSTONE / ENSIMBINI - One man was killed and IFP Gamalakhe Branch Chairperson, Mr James Zulu, was seriously injured, when they were ambushed whilst returning from a funeral, by persons armed with AK-47 assault rifles. Mrs Isabel Zulu was also wounded in the attack. The person who was killed, was Mr Zulu's brother-in-law, Bonginkosi. This was the second attack on Mr Zulu that day.

10/07/93 NEWCASTLE / MADADENI - 22h00 Two IFP Youth Brigade members, Melusi Zungu and Mkhululuki Lymon Sithebe, were shot at whilst visiting Section 9. Mr Sithebe was killed instantly and Mr Zungu was admitted to hospital.

10/07/93 NSELENI / NGWELEZANA - 19h00 IFPYB member, Mr Sydney Khoza (21), was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.

11/07/93 THOKQ7A - A RPG7 missile hit Thokoza hostel 2. No injuries were reported. According to the SAP the missile was intended to his an SAP vehicle, but residents in the area dispute this.

12/07/93 THOKOZA - 14h00 The house (433 Monyane Street) of IFP Branch Chairperson (Penduka branch), Mr Dondo Msomi, was attacked by alleged ANC supporters armed with AK-47 assault rifles from Ncala section, Katlehong. No injuries were reported.

13/07/93 OSIZWENI - 09h0n Prominent IFP Women's Brigade member, Miss Cebisile Khumalo, was stoned by alleged ANC youths, whilst she was walking in the township.

13/07/93 OSIZWFNI- Alleged ANC supporting youths entered the Mdumiseni High School, searching for IFP supporters. The IFP supporting scholars were forced to flee.

117 13/07/93 THOKOZA- IFP member, Mr Bongani Mbatha (21), was kidnapped at the Thokoza taxi rank by alleged ANC members. Mr Mbatha was taken to Phola Park where he was assaulted and forced to make a statement where he alleges that the SAP assisted and armed IFP members and hostel residents. Mr Mbatha retracted this statement before the Goldstone Commission and stated that the statement was forced and untrue.

13/07/93 THOKOZA - Trains from Vereeniging, which pass behind the Thokoza hostels have been searched every morning by persons looking for Zulus or Inkatha members. These persons are armed with revolvers and are allegedly Xhosa-speaking.

13/07/93 KATLEHONG / RAMAKONOBl WEST - People living in the Ramakonobi West area are leaving the area, after alleged Civics persons ordered them to leave the area, as they need the place open for a battlefield when attacking Mazibuko hostel. 25/07/93 KATLEHONG - ChairPe^son' Mr Mavovo Ngobese, was pulled out of a taxi and hacked to death. Mr on his way to Kwesine hostel to join others on their way to the Imbizo at the FNB Stadium. 25/07/93 KATLEHONG - The railway line to Kwesine was damaged by alleged ANC supporters. The SAP had to stop the train and transport Zulus who were returning from the Imbizo at the FNB sTad.um in Soweto, back X residences

120 25/07/93 KATLEHONG - IFP Katlehong Constituency Chairperson, Mr Absalom Anderson Shozi, was burnt by unidentified persons. Mr Shozi, on his return from Natal, was informed at the BP Garage in Schoeman Street, that his house had been set alight. Mr Shozi insisted on investigating and was abducted. His body was recovered the following day (also see 24/07/93 and 25/07/93).

26/07/93 KATLEHONG - Seven IFP supporters were killed in continued violence in Katlehong.

27/07/93 KATLEHONG - The SADF were patrolling next to the Buyafuthi hostel, when violence broke out between the patrol and hostel residents. Hostel residents allege that the SADF fired at them and that they did not identify themselves. One hostel resident was killed.

27/07/93 IXOPO- 12h30 IFP Organiser, Mr Dumisani Khuzwayo, was shot three times by alleged ANC supporters. Mr Khuzwayo was on his way to the IFP offices when the attack occurred.

One of Mr Khuzwayo's attackers was shot and injured by a passerby who witnessed the attack. The attacker was identified as Mr Sibusiso Dlamini, an ANC supporter.

29/07/93 ESCOURT- 16h30 & 18h30 ANC supporter, Mr Richard Hadebe, was shot and killed by an unidentified assailants armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. Mr Thathakhe Hlubi, an IFP supporter, who was with Mr Hadebe, fired at the attackers who hereafter fled. Five of the attackers were injured.

Two hours later, alleged ANC supporters shot at people waiting at a bus rank. Six IFP supporters were injured. It is alleged that this attack was in retaliation due to the death of Mr Hadebe, and that it was assumed that IFP supporters attacked Mr Hadebe. This is unfounded, as IFP supporter, Mr Hlubi, was the person who attempted to defend Mr Hadebe.

Reports indicate that the ANC had earlier this year demarcated Escourt into two areas: - IFP supporters are "allowed" to use the bus rank and Indian-owned businesses in the area; - ANC supporters are allocated all white-owned businesses.

29/07/93 NEWCASTLE / MADADENI - IFP member, Mr Clement Nhlanhla Buthelezi (19), of Section 4 was killed by alleged ANC youths armed with pangas and firearms. Mr Buthelezi had earlier that month been chased away from Mdumiseni High School by the same group of youths. During the attack the house of Mrs Thokozile Ngobo was also attacked.

29/07/93 EGUNJANENI / MTUBATUBA - IFP Branch Chairperson and Induna, Mr Mzofile Mhlwanazi, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.

30/07/93 NEWCASTLE / MADADENI - 20h30 IFPYB members going to the night vigil of Mr Vusi Hadebe (see 22/07/93) were attacked by a group of alleged ANC supporters. Delisile Khumalo (17) and Purity Mokoena (18) were hacked to death and Buzani Kunene was shot and killed. Three IFP members were also injured in the attack, including Phumizile Khumalo who was admitted to Madadeni Hospital.

30/07/93 UMKHOMAZI / MASHIWASE - A minibus, which IFP supporter, Mr Zethembe Shange, was driving, was ambushed by unidentified assailants. Mr Shange and an unidentified 10-year-old boy were shot and killed. The attackers were armed with AK-47 assault rifles and were dressed in SADF uniforms.

30/07/93 KWADLANGEZWA - IFP member, Mr Sifiso Dube (22), was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.

121 30/07/93 IVORY PARK - 00h05 & 04h00 Three IFP members were killed in separate incidents. Mr Justice Mabela was killed when ten men entered his room and accused him of being a spy for the Zulus. Mr Mabela was shot and killed.

Later the same morning, unidentified attackers fired several shots with AK-47 assault rifles into a room filled ' with Zulu-speaking persons. Two IFP members, Mr Nomusa Ngwenya and Mr Elias Zulu, were killed.

30/07/93 VOSLOORUS - Shots were fired at the predominantly IFP supporting Vosloorus hostel by a group of persons commemorating the death of Mr Chris Hani. The mobile police station and a vehicle were hit by the gunfire. The SAP intervened after hostel residents stormed the protesters and they fired teargas into the hostel. Two alleged ANC supporters were killed and another two were injured.

01/08/93 TAYLOR'S HALT / INADI - Four IFP supporters were killed in an attack by unidentified assailants. The names of the deceased are: Mr Wilson Lambo (39) (IFP Branch Treasurer - Mvundlweni), Mr Hezekia Mkhize (42), Kinile Mguse (39) and Mr Bongani Ndlovu.

The ANC has denied claims by the IFP that these deaths were related to opposition regarding the installation of a new chief and the ANC's opposition to traditional leaders. Chief Godfrey Zondi was inaugurated that Saturday.

01/08/93 UMGABABA / EHLANZENI - IFP member, Mr Sigadla Ntombela, was shot and killed at his house by unidentified assailants. An assortment of firearms were used in the attack.

02/08/93 RICHMOND - IFP members, Mr Mqapheli Zuma, Mrs Zuma and Mr Fana Mbhele, were killed by alleged ANC supporters.

03/08/93 OSIZWENI - 20h30 IFP Youth Brigade Chairperson, Mr Sithelo Khumalo, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.

04/08/93 OSIZWFNI - IFP supporter. Mr Dumisani Phillip Ndlovu, was killed by alleged ANC supporters.

05/08/93 FOLWENI / EMANGAZINI - IFP member and prominent businessman, Mr Mnyandu, was harassed and assaulted by members of the Internal Stability Unit (ISU). It is reported that they demanded that he give them firearms which he had allegedly received from Ulundi. The house was searched, but nothing was found.

07/08/93 THQKQ7A - IFP Branch Chairperson, Mr Simon Mazibuko, was abducted from his house and his body was later recovered. Mr Mazibuko had been shot and killed.

07/08/93 EZIMBOKODWENI - IFP member, Mr Khene Ngcobo, was shot and killed by unknown youths. These youths also stole money and property from Mr Ngcobo's house.

09/08/93 MADINI / KWASOMONDO - 13hnn IFPYB member, Mr Muziwandile Lucky Manxele (21), was shot and killed by alleged ANC supporters. IFP members and supporters in the area also complain that ISU members damage their property during their continuous searches.

10/08/93 THOKQ7A- The funeral procession of IFP member, Mr Sipho Shabalala, was attacked by alleged ANC supporting youths. Three IFP supporters were shot and killed in the attack.

15/08/93 THQKQ7A- Prominent IFP member, Mr Samson Nhlapo (father of UWUSA Publicity Secretary, Mr Duke Senakgomo) was abducted after his house was attacked. The body of Mr Nhlapo was later recovered.

16/08/93 ESHOWE / NYANINI - 05h0n IFP member, Mr Mandlenkosi Dlamini (47), was stabbed and shot to death by alleged ANC members when he went to investigate why an outside light went off.

123 16/08/93 ESCOURT / WEMBEZI - A taxi driven by IFP member, Mr Nqinane Mthalane, was ambushed by an identified ANC member. Mr Mthalane was shot three times and his firearm was also stolen. ANC member, Mr Maphenqe Zamisa, was arrested, but let out on bail on 18/08/93 in the Escourt Magistrate's Court.

16/08/93 ESCOURT / WEMBEZI - The body of IFP member, Mr Batshobhi Dlamini (from \/Q Section), was discovered at the entrance to Wembezi.

16/08/93 EZAKHENI - IFP member, Mr Thamsaqa Zikalala (22), of Cl Section, was stabbed and burnt to death by alleged ANC members from E Section. Reports indicate that Mr Zikalala was travelling in a taxi which was stopped by alleged ANC supporters. This group first spoke to the taxi driver, before taking Mr Zikalala away.

17/08/93 HLANGANANI / AMAQADI - 19h00 IFP Organiser (Mdutshini branch) and Chief Councillor of the AmaQadi Tribal Authority, Mr Simon Mattanda Goba (66), was shot by a group of approximately 30 men wearing camouflage uniforms. These attackers entered the house, claiming to be policemen. It is alleged that the attackers are from the predominantly ANC area in Richmond.

17/08/93 THOKOZA / PENDUKA - The IFP leadership called a meeting in Penduka Section to discuss why some persons are fleeing the area. The IFP leaders were informed that some people living in the area were receiving notes that they should leave the area by a specific date or face attack. Others stated that they were told that uMkhonto we Sizwe was going to attack the area and that they should leave, as they would be seen as IFP supporters if they did not do so.

18/08/93 MALUKAZI - IFP member, Mr Dumisani Khumalo (36), was shot and killed by unidentified assailants whilst he was waiting at a bus stop to go to work. It is alleged that the attackers are from Zamani near .

18/08/93 ESCOURT / WEMBF7I - The house of IFP leader, Mr Duke Mbongwa, was set alight by unidentified assailants.

18/08/93 VOSLOORUS - IFP member, Mr Alfred Ntshangase, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.

20/08/93 KATLEHONG - IFP member, Mr Mbuyiseni Sikhakhane, was shot and killed near Kwesine and Buyafuthi hostels by unidentified assailants.

25/08/93 KATLEHONG - IFP member, Mrs Nomalindi Hlela, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.

25/08/93 THOKOZA - IFP youth, Mr Pin-Pin Ramaisa (12), was shot and killed by alleged ANC supporters at his home in Khubeka Street.

01/09/93 KATLEHONG - IFP member, MrMncaleleni Linda, was shot and killed near Mngadi and Hadebe Sections by unidentified assailants.

01/09/93 KATLEHONG - IFP member, Mr Mzikayifani Malendala Malinga, was shot and killed near Mngadi and Hadebe Sections by unidentified assailants.

01/09/93 THOKOZA - IFP Youth Brigade member, Mr Msontho Makhathini (16), was abducted by alleged ANC supporters at Angus Railway Station and taken to a burnt out house in Thokoza Gardens. It is further alleged that black SAP members followed the abductors and instead of apprehending them gave them alcohol and thanked them for destroying the IFP. Mr Makhathini was injured, but managed to escape He also positively identified one of his attackers (ANCYL member).

04/09/93 THOKQ7A - The shack (A18 Lekwane Street) of IFP member, Mr Elphas Mbhele, was set alight by alleged ANC supporters from Twala Section, Katlehong. Mr Mbhele's wife was also stabbed in the back.

04/09/93 THOKOZA - 7?h0n A group of approximately 300 alleged ANC supporters from Katlehong armed with AK-47 assault rifles attacked Penduka Section. A hand grenade was also hurled at the house (433 Monyani Street) of IFP branch chairperson, Mr Dondo Msomi. (Also see 19/07/93)

05/09/93 THQKQ7A - Mr Bhekuyise Chamane was pulled out of his taxi at Osizweni Dry Cleaners and shot in the mouth by alleged ANC supporters from the Sotho Section.

06/09/93 THOKOZA - Mr Amon Khanyile was stabbed in the back at Letsoho Shopping Centre by alleged ANC supportinq youths from Twala Section.

06/09/93 THOKOZA - A taxi of Mr Musewenduna Masondo (IFP) was shot at near the Shell Garage in Khumalo Street by a group of blanketed men allegedly from Mandela informal settlement. IFP supporter, Miss Busi Zondo was shot in the arm.

07/09/93 THOKOZA - ?1T ber and a resident of Hostel #2, Mr Mtshali, was abducted at Angus Railway Station and burnt in Phola Park.

07/09/93 THOKQ7A - Shacks in Phumlamqashi were set alight by alleged ANC supporters from Twala Section. IFP supporter Mr Simon Mbatha, was shot in the hand.

08/09/93 THOKOZA - IFP Othandeni Branch Secretary, Mrs Meriam Lilly Dlamini, was abducted from her house in Extension 2 y five men armed with AK-47 assault rifles. Her corpse was recovered in the cemetery.

08/09/93 THOKOZA - IFP member, Ms Albertina Zikalala, was hacked to death at Letsoho Shopping Centre by a group of alleged ANC supporting youths from Twala Section.

09/09/93 THOKOZA - Ms Selina Sakwe was stabbed at Mkhathiswe Primary School by a group of alleged ANC supporting youths - (some wearing ANC caps). The SAP intervened and these youths fled. Ms Sakwe was admitted to Natalspruit Hospital.

10/09/93 THOKOZA - The coffin of the late Mr Samson Mkhize was shot at by alleged ANC supporters when they attacked 13 Mazibuko Street. Mr Sifiso Mkhize was shot in the leg.

11/09/93 THOKOZA - Mr Michael Phakathi was slapped across the face and robbed of R70 in Phumlamqashi by two alleged ANC youths (one weanng a T-shirt reading "Hamba kahle Chris Hani”. These youths were arrested by the SAP.

12709/93 THOKOZA - The house (1760 Mkwayi Street) (see 28/08/93) of IFP member, Mr Qhenga Sithole, was attacked by a group often Youths armed with AK-47 assault rifles. These youths were searching for Mr Sithole and his r, Mrs Letta Sithole, because they wanted to know if she had reported the rape of 28/08/93 The w c J n f ! 6 Unti' the followin9 morning Mimi Sithole managed to escape in the morning and alerted the SADF who accompanied her and rescued the family. They hereafter fled to Hostel #3. No arrests were made, as the youths fled when they heard the approaching SADF vehicles.

127 12/09/93 THOKOZA- IFP supporter, Mr Wilson Sibiya, was stabbed in the neck at his house in Shabalala Street by an alleged ANC supporter.

12/09/93 KATLEHONG - 13h00 Mr Zebulon Zulu (4082 Motloung Section), was dragged out of his car in Twala Section by youths and beaten and stabbed. Mr Zulu and his car were then set alight. It is alleged that the youths shouted that he was a Zulu and must be killed.

12/09/93 BERGVILLE - IFP Secretary, Mr Bhekokwakhe Hadebe, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.

13/09/93 THOKOZA - The house (433 Monyani Street) of IFP Chairperson, Mr Dondo Msomi, was petrol bombed by alleged ANC supporters from Ncala Section. Mr Msomi's grandchild, Dudu, was shot in the arm. (Also see 04/09/93)

13/09/93 KATLEHONG / PILOT RAILWAY STATION - The Pilot Railway Station line was damaged by youths, preventing hostel residents from going to work.

13/09/93 NSELENI / MADLEBE - 20h00 IFP member, Mr Sibongiseni Khoza (71), was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.

14/09/93 THOKOZA - IFP supporter, Mr Timothy Zondi (721 Mdakane Street), was stabbed at Thokoza/Alrode bridge by two Xhosa speaking men.

15/09/93 IXOPO- IFP Chairperson, Mr Ethelbert Malinga, was shot and killed.

16/09/93 IXOPO / HIGHFLATS - IFP Chairperson and LPC representative, Mr Teacher Khumalo, was shot and killed.

17/09/93 IXOPO / HIGHFLATS - IFP Emazabekweni Branch Vice-Chairperson, Mr JJ Ngubane, was shot and killed by alleged ANC supporters.

17/09/93 THOKOZA - Well known ANC youths in Ntabansimbi entered the house (1752 Mkwayi Street) of Mr Mchunu and asked Mrs Mchunu where her husband was. When they could not find Mr Mchunu, these youths left and fired shots at the house from outside.

18/09/93 THOKOZA - A taxi belonging to Mr Ndlovu was set alight at the Shell Garage taxi rank by a group of youths. A peace monitor fired two shots from a car at a group of taxi owners who were chasing the youths who burnt the taxi.

20/09/93 THOKOZA - 11 h30 A large group of alleged ANC supporters approaching from Osizweni Dry Cleaners fired shots at Hostel #3. The ISU intervened and arrested some of the attackers.

21/09/93 THOKOZA - A group of alleged ANC supporters from Ncala Section attacked Penduka Section and the house of Mr Simon Hlope (373 Monyane Street).

22/09/93 THOKOZA - A group of alleged ANC supporting youths from Ntabansimbi attacked Penduka Section and burnt several houses, including the house of prominent IFP member, Mrs Mary Zulu. Miss Thobile Vilakazi was shot in the leg.
