PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Many thanks to our two sponsors without whom this club would struggle to survive, viz. Enid and Danny Dwyer and the St George Masos. The single biggest action for our club is to diversify and enlarge our income stream.

The season has been very difficult off the field. We all can appreciate the long term benefits that the drainage of the ground will bring but the short term pain of having no home matches, no training venue for a few weeks and then a training venue with lighting that had to be put up and taken down each night really tested the patience of many of the committee. But they came through this and the many other trials exceedingly well. Thank you to each of you.

The development of our players is easily measured. On many occasions we had more than 70 at training. This only happens when players are happy, when they are learning and when they know that their dreams are within reach. All 3 sides in the finals, equal 5 th in the club championship and a premiership for Ressies is a pretty good result. Thank you to our Club and First Grade coach Terry Mudge and his coaching panel of Gavin Raper, Derek Waters and Jason Saddington.

Behind these men are the dedicated group of team managers, Kev Wilsen, Alan Pandelis and Ian Ford and Eugene Stek, physios Jessica Calderara, Brett Liu and Jim Kazaglis and team, Football Manager John Addison, the canteen women & staffers organized by Richard Orton and Pat Jones, timekeeper Bobby Sterling, “Every-thing Else” Manager Richard Orton and volunteers who keep the boys looked after. Thanks you to all who have worked so hard to keep us on the field at a semi- professional level.

Every home match a small band of canteen ladies led by Pat Jones take over the canteen and somehow manage to provide a great service to our club and our visitors. This was also testing as every home match was at an away venue.

We have a senior group of players including Scott Richmond, Jon Shineberg, Kieran & Declan Donohue, Pat McBride, Steve Wilsen and the one and only Greg King who organize, volunteer and chase whenever I ask. Again many thanks. They have been joined by our young guns in David Lycakis, Ben Hodgson and Alexander Wynn.

Also to the players and your partners and families. I am sure that you would have felt an increased demand on your time and effort. I am sure that this will continue as we strive to win the Premier Division flag in season 2013.

Mention must be made and thanks given to the Chairman of our Building Committee Peter Orton who has single handed progressed the redevelopment of the Olds Park dressing room facilities. This also will be a terrific facility for our club. Thanks also to the generosity of the NSW Government, Hurstville Council and AFL NSW without whom our ground improvements and Clubhouse refurbishments would not of happened.

VICE-PRESIDENT'S REPORT The 2012 Season was a successful for the club with all 3 sides playing finals for the first time since 1997. With the Ressies winning the flag and the 18’s finishing 4 th and the seniors finishing 5 th , the club is heading in the right direction.

During the year the under 18’s had 7 under 16’s get a taste of under 18’s football all boys have committed to the Dragons in 2013. St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2012 Annual Report 4

We again planned for the back to the junior’s night again only to be rained out for the 3 rd year in a row. We did manage to have a night at Bankstown, Ramsgate and Bangor. We can only hope that the weather will be kinder to us in 2013.

The most exciting thing for 2013 is the club establishing the St.George under 16’s academy; this has been driven by Andrew Wynn who has done and great job. The feedback from the junior clubs has been positive and this will give players outside the Swans Academy a new way of developing as players. The introduction of our own academy will now help us to build stronger relationships with all of the junior clubs.

During the year there was a re-introduction of the GSJ junior carnival for under 13’s, 14’s and 16’s. We as a club were directly involved in both the 13’s and 14’s. Blake Guthrie and Nathan Kenny coaching the under 13’s Sydney south side, I also was involved coaching the under 14’s Sydney south side. This again shows that we as a club are committed to our juniors.

In September the club was again represented at the State under 13’s carnival in Albury with four members of the club involved with the under 13 South Academy Team, Kieran Donohue, Blake Guthrie and Nathan Kenny joined me in Albury with the team.

As a club we are building the relationships with our junior clubs we have a lot of work still to do but we are heading in the right direction. After all these are our future dragons.

Derek Waters Junior Vice-President

SECRETARY’S REPORT

There are three (3) components to the running of St. George AFC: Management, Football Operations and Administration. The reports of each of these components appear separately in this Annual Report.

The primary role of the Administration is to give effect to decisions of the management Committee through-out the year and support the Football Operations during the term of its training and playing programme. In the execution of these duties there has been liaison and interaction with the AFL, Hurstville Council and the local community, as well as schools and Junior Clubs in the Southern Area. The cooperation of those bodies is acknowledged and has been greatly appreciated.

STATUTORY OFFICER

All statutory requirements and those of the AFL have been met within the scheduled procedural and time limits.

GENERAL OVERVIEW

With wet weather and delays in the preparation of OLDS Park #1, our “home ground “ matches were all played away from the Club facilities, a fact that had considerable impact on Club finances and administration during the year and stretched volunteer resources to the limit.

To complicate matters the serious illness of a family member took me out of the State for a number of weeks in two sessions.

ASSISTANT SECRETARY

While the position was not filled at the beginning of the season, in the middle of the season when I was out of Sydney, Ian Ford stepped up to the plate and the administration hardly missed a beat: My thanks to Ian and his wife Maureen for that support.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2012 Annual Report 5

It is clear that when we take-up residency in the new facility, that position of Assistant Secretary must be filled.

LIQUOR LICENCE

The Club continues to hold a Limited function liquor Licence, which permits the sale for the onsite consumption of liquor during and after home games and on occasions specifically listed with the Liquor Administration Board. St George’s acceptance of and introduction of the AFL and community’s principles on social and legislated responsibilities as well as its standard of administration, has led to this Club becoming the first senior Club in NSW to achieve Silver Level in the AFL’s ranking, while at the same and for the same reason the Club has achieved a similar ranking in the NSW State Good Sports programme.

MEDIA

Relations with the local media, in the St George and Sutherland Leader, has been good and productive, but at the same time less effective than might have been wished, caused in the main by our inability to prepare copy and accompanying photo’s in time to meet the Monday morning closing time for copy. Most of the general copy is prepared by Kevin Wilsen, the Manager of First Grade and little local editing is required. Support in this area is sought for the coming year,

REGISTRAR

The function of Registrar was again “shared” among a number of the Committee, particularly on the operation side. Most of the work load is in the early part of the season and with on-line registration now operating the duties are becoming more a “keyboard exercise” rather than a “paper chase”.

PROPERTY OFFICER

This role again fell to the Secretary with the help of the Team Managers, particularly Kevin Wilsen and Eugene Stek . With their and Ian Ford’s help, we hardly missed a beat.

VOLUNTEERS

The majority of non playing volunteers, as usual came from the parents of UI8’s and my thanks go to all. During the year, as in the past, we used a four (4) internal team structure, to provide a roster of labour for weekly duties: Each year this system improves.

CANTEEN

With “home games” spread all over Sydney through the unavailability of Olds Park this, usually key element of Club fundraising and social activity centre was severely restricted. The success it achieved was largely due to Patricia Jones and her group of helpers. In the coming season we will need to “raise the ante” in this area to help pull back the short fall in our cashflow projections.

CLUBHOUSE MANAGEMENT

Our thanks again to Bobby and Marcia Sterling for their regular rehabilitation of the Club Rooms. As mentioned earlier, the facilities were underutilised in 2012 as the ground was not in commission, but there were ongoing needs to accommodate other users, particularly the Library’s Children’s programmes. Bob’s corporate knowledge of the drainage and other services has been of considerable help in the coordination of the services as we move to integrate the new facilities into the existing buildings.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2012 Annual Report 6

RELATIONSHIP WITH STAKEHOLDERS

NSWAFL

Our relationship with and ready availability of NSWAFL staff during the year, has again been excellent, as has been their support in our “away/home” scheduling and support with the associated logistics. The Clubs thanks go to all the “head office staff” and in particular Garry Burkinshaw and Joe La Posta for their support in this area. With Garry’s resignation and departure at the end of last season sees the NSWAFL lose a large slab of its corporate knowledge and energy: We await the replacement process to see which two (2) people will be appointed to take-over his role.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS

While each year a new batch of U18’s parents /taxi drivers are “introduced” to the Club, this falls away as quickly as red “Ps” appear on the family’s 2 nd car and this year the condition became more noticeable due to the vagaries of grounds and scheduling. This is just another area where we hope to have significant improvement with the new facilities.

PAST PLAYERS AND SUPPORTERS

Without a home to host the Annual “Back to St George” day this function was abandoned for 2012. However with the institution of the “Club playing number “ and “Club Tie”, we expect 2013 to be BIG.

COMMUNITY

As in past years I have made myself known to and interested myself in the activities of other users of Olds Park, be they active sporting or passive users and as has been the past have continued our support for Peakhurst Branch of Hurstville City Library, particularly with their ‘overflow” and childrens activities.

COUNCIL

With the ongoing issues surrounding the new facilities, we have received great support and cooperation from Council’s professional staff, a matter matched if not bettered by Rob Casey, the Manager of Parks Operations and Christine Irwin the Sport and Recreation Officer while at the coal face Chris Anderson has, as for years past , continued to support Bobby Sterling and others in our daily activities at the ground.

RELATIONSHIP WITH JUNIOR CLUB

There are seven(7) junior clubs in the Southern Sydney zone, our designated area of responsibility. .St George has and will continue with its policy of not establishing a tie with either of those separately, but rather to provide the opportunity for any junior in the zone, who so aspires, to test themselves at the top. Each year this Club holds a training evening with each of the junior clubs and beginning with pre-season for the coming season St George will be introducing a St George Academy Programme: Details of this are in final stages.

CHALLENGE FOR THE COMING YEAR

At the time of writing this report all Sydney AFL Clubs are awaiting the outcome of the Review conducted during the past year over the structure and direction for Sydney Football. St George, as with other Clubs were given the opportunity to meet with the Review Committee led by Tom Harley and in brief our approach, in general terms, was that;

• There are too many teams in the existing Premier Division. • The existing structure is too City centric • Sydney Football should be based on junior zones. • There should be a minimum of eight (8) Clubs and six (6) U16’s for each zone. • Only one (1) Premier Div. Senior Club per junior zone. St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2012 Annual Report 7

• Where more than one (1) Club currently exists and no joint agreement the AFL should decide • Divisionalisation might equalise competitions to a degree, but is destroying homogeneity of Clubs..

It is the experience of some members of St George that reviews of this nature generally have a board agenda of their own and this is not to say that the review process was unnecessesary, but rather that it was an appropriate strategy (environmental scanning) in the strategic management process.

We await the result as the basis for Club management.

Richard Orton Club Secretary

TREASURER'S REPORT Income in 2012 suffered due to a lack of a home ground which resulted in lower canteen takings as games were relocated to various venues across Sydney. Significant additional expenses were also incurred in hiring lights to train under as ground works forced us onto the poorly lit Olds No.2 Oval.

The Club’s income and expenditure figures are heavily inflated due to ground redevelopment work but if these figures are removed the Club made a small loss over the year. The Club’s financial position has been steadily improving over the past three years and most of the committee’s energy in 2012 has been devoted to managing the ground and club house redevelopment. A small loss for the year is not a major setback considering the challenges the Club faced and the committee expects this to be a one-off event. At present the club has a large bank balance though this is budgeted for the club house redevelopment.

St George received large grants from the NSW Government, Hurstville Council and the AFL to upgrade the ground and club house. The club house remains an ongoing project, is being effectively managed by Peter Orton and looks likely to come in slightly under budget. This will be a fantastic achievement and any saving will go to the Club’s bottom line. To think a little over three years ago the Club was uncompetitive on the field and in dire financial straits. In 2011 the remaining debt to the AFL was repaid, in 2012 all teams made finals and by the end of 2013 St George will be completely clear of debt and be the beneficiary of $350,000 worth of upgraded playing facilities. It is a great achievement.

There remains one final challenge. St George is no different from most sporting clubs which live each year hand-to-mouth, continually chasing funds to support its activities. St George needs to address its low sponsorship base and develop an income stream as we are heavily reliant on our Major Sponsor St George Masonic Club and the benevolence of Danny Dwyer. Without either the club would not operate. Broadening the sponsorship base and seeking ways to build an ongoing income stream will be a focus for 2013.

Gavin Raper Treasurer

FOOTBALL MANAGER'S REPORT With three competitive young teams all playing finals football, the St.George DNA is so very strong. Mixing the desire to play a better brand of football and enjoying it along the way is a dream come true for the playing group. The coaching staff of Terry, Gadget and Derek should be proud of the way they were able to prepare the boys every week both on the training track and on match day in the dressing rooms.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2012 Annual Report 8

Terry’s “master plan” is a combination of education on the track and in the clubroom. His Tuesday night addresses were an opportunity for not only the players, but the “elder statesman” of the Club to learn about modern day football techniques. He is not only teaching our young boys how to prepare for, and play football correctly, but how important it is to believe in themselves. This is a skill that they will take into their personal and business lives. For the playing group to put this into action efficiently the body has to be in A1 condition. The decision by John Hupfield to join the Club this year was like winning the lottery. He taught he boys about pre- and post-game hydration (using weight loss indicators), pre and post-game food selection, fitness drills and indicators (yo-yo test), videoed kicking for one on one analysis, etc... His input this year has been a major factor for our huge step in the right direction.

It could be said that Gadget reluctantly accepted the Ressies coaching position two years ago, but he took on the challenge the same way he did when he was playing Senior footy for the Club. He lives and breathes football and the boys responded to his enthusiasm. They started playing the structured game about mid-season and apart from the one disappointment against Camden steamrolled the competition to become Premiers. They repaid Gadge for his belief in them with a Playing Coach Premiership. He enjoyed the chance to play with a young squad and sharing it with his old teammates Shiners and Rick Talbot will stay in his memory forever.

FORDEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New to the Coaching ranks but not new to the Club is Derek Waters. He was part of the 2011 Game Day Coaches, but he applied for the 2012 U/18’s Coaching position because he wanted ensure the boys moving into Senior footy were taught to play Team Football. His game plan was in keeping with Terry’s and the team improved incredibly as the year went on. Derek’s game tactics were team specific and his knowledge of the opposition players was invaluable.

It is difficult for boys coming from U/16 to get their heads around “Team Football”, because they are essentially the best two or three footballers from all our junior clubs playing in rep squad every week. Derek achieved this remodelling and must be licking his lips at the chance in 2013 to take it further in the U/18 competition, but also proudly see some of his boys move into Senior footy.

This whole Dragons renaissance has had a lot of contributors, but none more important than Brendan Donohue. Under his management the St.George AFC has been transformed into a stable organisation that is debt free, boasts the best Coaching Panel of any Sydney AFL Club, has an upgraded playing surface at Olds Park with drainage, has brand new club and dressing rooms that have doubled in size, attained Silver Level Accreditation in The AFL Quality Club Program, has a sound Business Plan and players Code of Conduct, number one Senior Club in the St.George and Shire areas, good relations with all our Junior Clubs, doubled the numbers at presentation night and footballers playing football for the “CLUB and TEAM MATES”.

Congratulations Brendan we are moving in the right direction.

HISTORICAL COMMITTEE – ANNUAL REPORT 2012

This is a voluntary body working behind the scenes to; research, collect and record overall history of St George AFC, to the best of its ability. The members of our committee have not changed during season 2012, and comprise:

* Bob Sterling 02 9771 6729 * Scott Richmond 0410 534 122 * David Green 0408 882 757 * Patrick McCourt 0418 273 594

During 2012 we continued actioning matters reported in 2011 annual report – {I have not devoted as much time during past 12 months, when compared with previous years, due to business and personal situations [one being my health]}. However; we made progress:

1 Book recording first 50 years of St George AFC – 1928 to 1978 – still being compiled by David Green – [refer details in 2010 & 2011 Annual Reports] – David and I met a few times during 2012, to progress. Completion date of book is still in pipeline.

2 Recording Overall History of St George AFC – as advised in 2011 report; until David Green completes his writings, mine is on hold. David’s research forms part of my works.

3 Scott Richmond – continues gathering information, collecting any data he can from 2001 to present, covering any aspect of Club and Football activities for this period

4 Historical Recordings on St George Web Site – I have prepared a number of items, and player profiles to place here. I am waiting direction from executive committee [Gavin Raper] as to how this is to be placed on St George web site.

Our esteemed St George colleague, Percy Symons – St George Hall of Fame Inductee – in August, was the guest speaker at NSW Historical Committee’s, annual, Austin Robertson Lectures on early history of Teal Cup in NSW. Percy coached this team on two occasions in mid 1960s.

Once again, thanks to Ian Granland and members of NSW Historical Committee, for providing historical data of St George AFC, to assist our research.

Seeking Information - there are many voids to be filled, on Club’s history; period 1928 to 1960. We welcome hearing from any colleague who holds the smallest piece of ‘Historical Information’ relative to St George AFC. Please contact any one of the above mentioned, committee members.

Congratulations to the Club Committee, coaches, players and supporters for its progress and achievements during season 2012. The premiership won by Reserve Grade is testimony to this progress. Well done to all!

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2012 Annual Report 11

SENIOR COACH'S REPORT

From the outset the values & vision that Brendan & his team have installed off field in 2011/12, allowed the playing & coaching group to season 2012 with a vigor not seen in many of years. Preseason commenced early November 2011 with strong numbers in all grades & was conducted at various venues. The effort & costs to have portable lights at training sessions from Brendan & his team was overwhelming. This showed the true meaning of the St. George AFC – DNA.

2012 produced several hurdles to overcome with the refurbishments at Olds. We didn’t play a game of football at Olds though-out the year, which made playing 18 away games a challenge for the playing group & we were also faced with the hardest draw, playing all top 5 teams twice.

That being said, the senior group really knuckled down & built on & exceeded in some cases, our over-all objectives from 2011/12. We were only 8 quarters away from playing in a grand final & a further 4 quarters away from realizing our ultimate goal. It took our opponents in the elimination final to kick the highest score of the 2012 finals series to defeat us by 14pts.

Statistically in 2012, the premier division team was ranked 4 th for points for (1905) & 5 th for points against (1232) we had a % of 154. 2011 we were ranked 7 th for points for (1358) & 8 th for points against (1610) with a % of 84, a solid turnaround. We won 12 games in 2012, losing to both grand finalist though-out the year by less than 3 goals. UNSW-5pts – Balmain-2x14pts. We did defeat Balmain (R/up)-40pts, P/Hills (3 rd )-20pts & UTS (6 th) 120pts &30pts

Offensively we had kicked 7 or more goals in a quarter of football 16 times though out the year, our highest being 2 x 9 goal quarters in R7. Defensively we held our opposition goal less &/or scoreless in 9 quarters of football.

Our loss in the elimination final was bitter as we had our chances to win the game in the dying minutes! Opposition clubs have to play at their best to defeat St. George now, as our DNA won’t allow for anything else.

Our rise in 2012 has been a direct result of the support the playing group & I have receive off field.

I wish to thank Kevin Wilsen, Greg King, Derek Waters & John Addison for their tireless work. Every step we took as a group, you all were there helping, organizing & assisting what needed to be done for the betterment of the team first. Your kind words of wisdom & encouragement each week was greatly appreciated. I sincerely thank you all.

To John Hupfeld & Jason Saddington, your energy, positive persona & drive is infectious. You brought another level of professionalism to the club that has never been seen before. I can’t wait for 2013 & what we can achieve together.

And finally Brendan Donohue & Gavin Raper thank you so much for your guidance, patience & friendship throughout the year. “WE ARE ST.GEORGE AFC”

Terry Mudge Senior Coach

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2012 Annual Report 12

RESERVE GRADE COACH'S REPORT

Firstly, a big thank you to Kieran Donohue for his assistance in coaching on game days, Alan Pandelis and Ian Ford for taking care of the management duties, Terry Mudge and Derek Waters for their coaching advice and all of the St George Committee for their support. I think I speak for the team when I say it was a very satisfying season and I’m glad Danny Dwyer, Bob Sterling and Billy Kazaglis were there to enjoy it.

With a group of talented under 18s (Ben Carroll, Alex Brooks, Harry Brooks and Chris McGinley) graduating to senior football it was hoped that 2012 would be an improvement on the 5 games won in 2011. Of most concern was the loss of height with Nathan Smith and Adam Pearsall both moving to Newcastle. Not solving the height problem but arguably our best recruit was Daniel ‘DK’ Lim, a slight, speedy, left footed midfielder who would spend the season racking up possessions despite opponents trying to knock him out of the game.

No sooner had pre-season started than injuries began to inflict their toll with long term injuries to several players. Nevertheless the season commenced well with a narrow win over Sydney University who had inflicted heavy losses on the team the previous year. Round two against Auburn was an infamous affair where we walked away with the points and few cuts and bruises for our troubles.

Confidence was up but so was the injury count and we found ourselves at 2-5 after such a promising start. Despite the losses attendance at training was a marked improvement on 2011 with numbers above 20 a regular occurrence. Two of those regular attendees were new recruits Daniel ‘Ziggy’ Annor and Michael Townson who turned up simply wanting to play AFL. Raw in talent, each bought athleticism and a desire to compete, and as the year progressed each would play an increasingly key role in St George’s rise. They also solved our height problem.

If standards are high off the field it will, sooner or later, be reflected on field and having lost to Balmain by a goal we finally got a narrow 10 point win up against Nor West. Pity Andrew Herne who, having driven 90 minutes to the game, injured his ankle two minutes in and subsequently sat out the entire match. In Round 9 an Auburn forfeit robbed Captain Rick Talbot of a 200 th game to remember. We trained instead.

A loss to Camden in the mud at Maroubra hid the sudden injection of talent into the team as Ben Maddern (broken forearm in pre-season requiring a plate), Vinny Stephens (pre-season knee), Matt Mackney (new recruit) and Dylan Taylor all made their season debuts. After 10 rounds St George was 4-6, equal third last and averaging just under 10 goals a game.

With players returning from injury, a new appreciation on the importance of kicking thanks to Mick Clift and the general improvement which comes from training consistently St George were ready to turn the corner. Third placed Balmain were the first to fall reversing the earlier one goal loss. Nor West followed and when early season leaders UNSW were held to 3 goals in a win without league leading goal kicker Jon Shineberg a serious run at finals seemed more than a possibility. Confidence grew again with the defeat of leaders Sydney University but a 1 point loss to Camden reminded St George of the importance of discipline and playing to a plan. It would be the last defeat and against Manly and Illawarra we kicked our highest scores of the season and headed into the finals with confidence.

The revival was best exemplified by Captain Rick Talbot. A seven goal output in the first half of the season was tripled on the run home. Daniel Lim, Harry Brooks and Jon Shineberg were stand outs in the first half of the season and they would be joined by Vinny Stephens, Andrew Herne, Adam

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2012 Annual Report 13

Buttling, Alex Brooks, Adam Bennett and Matt Mackney. Defensively St George leaked goals in 2011 but in the final six games of 2012 opposition sides averaged less than four goals per game.

Thirteen U/18s played twenty three games in Division Two whilst Harry Brooks, Adam Bennett, Ben Carroll, Daniel Lim and Matt Mackney made their Premier Division debuts. The continued development of the U/18s paid dividends during finals series and in the Grand Final Matt Jones, Ben Hodgson and Jacob Stek made telling contributions. Tragically Mick Townson (knee), Adam Bennett (ankle) and Adam Buttling (knee), all missed the grand final through serious injuries and all three would have been starting players in the side.

In the second half of the year St George’s dominance of games increased the longer they went. At 14 points down with 10 minutes to go in a low scoring Grand Final it was looking bleak but the team had simply worked too hard for too long to give up. If you’ve cancelled an overseas holiday for football (James Do Canto), recently torn the long head of your bicep off the bone (Vinny Stephens) or are playing your 19 th year of football without a title (Rick Talbot) you just have to find a way to win. Whatever the challenge in life persistence eventually wins out and so it was that John Ford, probably the most consistent trainer over the past two years, ran onto a Jon Shineberg kick and slammed home the winner in the dying minutes of the game.

Other highlights for season 2012 included: • Jon Shineberg’s banana in the last quarter of the GF and torpedo goal in the mud v Camden • Harry Brook’s boundary line goal on the run into the wind v Manly • Michael Townson’s 75m goal v Manly (with the wind) and • Jackson Claridge’s mark v Camden • Matt Mackney’s preliminary final goal from 40m on the boundary line v Sydney Uni

In closing, it was great to play with and coach a group of players who had to work for success, to see new players learn the game, watch those new to senior football gradually improve as a result of training and a couple of veterans get justly rewarded for many years of faithful service.

UNDER 18 COACH’S REPORT

When I look back at what we achieved this year I can summarise it in one word - Fantastic. The group of players need to be congratulated for their commitment and dedication to our plan for the year. When you consider after round 5 we were in second last spot with 1 win and 4 losses, if somebody said to me we would play finals I would have said you need to go see a doctor. I said to the group at the start of the year we would be better in the second half of the year than the first half. In the end we played finals and achieved so much as a group.

We beat every team during the year except for Sydney Hills Eagles; our goal during the year was to win 7 games of footy in the end we won 11 games including the elimination final by 50 pts over Pennant Hills. It would be one of the highlights of the year along with wins over Sydney Uni and Illawarra at Wollongong, and we kicked 34 goals against Penrith during the year.

I was well supported by my leadership group of Captain Ben Hodgson and Vice Captains Dan Cullen and Harry Roach. Like most season injuries played their part like all teams. We managed to overcome them and put a team of 22 on the park every week. Guys like Matt Jones, Matthew McDonald, Mitch Edwards and Adam Whatley were great leaders all year with the younger guys.

St. George Australian Football Club Incorporated – 2012 Annual Report 14

Every player in the group developed through the year and every player contribute at various stages during the year. David Watts, Dean Gilbert, Matt Jones, Dan Cullen, Mitch Edwards and Ben Hodgson all played first grade and Ressies. Jackson Claridge, Riley Orr and Jacob Stek also played Ressies.

We used 38 players during the year including getting some games into next year’s under 18’s when we had injuries. None of the under 16’s looked out of place when they played games for us. I must thank Eugene Stek who did an outstanding job as team manager every week he was well organised and wrote the match reports every week. I’m looking forward to working with Eugene again next year. Thanks to all of the parents for your support during the year and helping out when we needed you to do jobs.

A huge thanks to Jess and Brett for looking after all of the injuries during the year and making the tough calls on some guys. Even if the players did not agree with them at various times.

To Brendan, Addo, Kev Wilsen and Richard thank you for all of your support during the year it was appreciated by me and the players.

To all of the senior playing group thank you for the true Dragon DNA you showed all of the new players to the club. We are a true Football club in every sense of the word.

To Gadget, mate thank you what can I say but you embody everything that is St.George. You are a legend of the club and you have a great football brain.

Mudgee, well it is like this you are the man that helped me come to the Dragons this year. You are a great mentor and a great coach you are only too willing to share your knowledge of the game and I became a better coach this year because of you.

To my own family who live through the season with me you are amazing, Darcy coming to training every Tuesday night and helping out on pasta nights thank you. To Riley only getting to watch you play a few times this year was tough on both of us but I know you see the big picture.

To my wife Kate thank you for your never ending support of me and working with my crazy football life that I live.

Finally to the players I want to thank you all for a great season of football you are the guys that made it enjoyable, you are the guys that worked so hard and came so far during the year. In a few years time when I have had enough of coaching it will be a year that will hold a special place in my memory for what we did.

Derek ”Muddy” Waters 2012 18’s Coach

I look forward to 2013… GO THE DRAGONS! DRAGONS DNA IS IN ALL OF US!

HALL OF FAME [HOF] COMMITTEE REPORT - 2012

Background and Guidelines - St George established its ‘Hall of Fame’ in 2005. Guidelines were set by then Club Executive, to assess nominations for HOF induction, one being a limit of two inductions per year.

Requests for Nominations - A posting was made on Club’s web site, inviting St George members and colleagues to submit names for assessment and consideration for induction for 2012. This request was also advertised weekly in the Club’s newsletter.

Outcome - following matters were actioned or initiated:

* A couple of names were verbally suggested [to HOF committee]; we requested some background and details be submitted in writing for assessment. No formal details were submitted to HOF committee for official assessment * We believe there should be an initiating document [from a colleague], outside of our HOF charter as. We do not want to favour a colleague, on a verbal instruction * We have had a few names under consideration for some time; we are still reviewing these names and others as we work with Historical Committee reviewing history of Club, to assess persons who may qualify for induction to HOF * We believe HOF committee should not induct for induction sake, to meet annual criteria. It is a special honour to be inducted into a Club’s H O F, and * With benefit of historical research, guidelines applying in some instances in past decades to bestowing “Life Membership” on a colleague were sometimes too liberally applied. We cannot allow a similar situation apply to HOF inductions [opinion of the P J McCourt] * No names or details were submitted directly to Club Committee for HOF assessment. We made our recommendation to Club Committee ; there be no induction to our HOF for 2012. This was endorsed by the committee.

Since 2005 and conclusion of 2012; there has been 19 inductions into “Hall of Fame”.

Structure of our 2012 committee , three of which are HOF inductees:

• Tony Quinn – President contact # 0421 057 741 • Bob Sterling – Member contact # (02) 9771 6729 • Gavin Raper – Member contact # 0424 232 467 • Patrick J McCourt – Secretary contact # 0418 273 594

We continue to review, assess St George colleagues for HOF induction, as we research and record History of St George AFC. We invite and welcome any colleagues to submit nominations, who they feel, should be considered for induction.

SYDNEY AFL RISING STAR AWARD Representing St George’s young talent was the nomination of Jordan West for the Sydney AFL Rising Star Award. They were:

Round 15- Jordan West

The AFL Sydney Rising Star Nominee for Round 15 is Jordan West from St George. His nomination is as reads below:

Jordan, son of legendary Dragons’ player and 1991 Phelan Medallist David West started playing at five years of age in Auskick, and by the end of primary school Jordan was playing both AFL and basketball.

Jordan started to achieve representative honours in basketball at 15 and AFL (Pigeons- Talented Player Program) at 16.

Jordan attributes his improvement in skills at both sports to his dedication to fitness, and with his Dad‘s guidance he learnt to use these skills to his advantage.

During 2011 and 2012 he made the NSW All Schools Basketball Team and in January 2012 toured the USA with Australian Schoolboys Team.

St.George Senior Coach Terry Mudge has been literally stopped in his tracks by the performances of Jordan.

"Jordan has great endurance, loves a contest and has a great set of hands. At 18 years of age he has stepped straight into a key position and performed every week at senior level,” Mudge said.
