eginning in October, the Figge’s third-floor gallery will be filled with Rose Frantzen’s multi-layered portrait of her hometown of Maquoketa, Iowa. The project dates back to 2006, when the artist invited townspeople to sit and B have their portraits painted in a public studio she set up in a downtown storefront. The resulting 180 portraits, of sitters ranging in age from a few weeks to over 90 years old, were shown at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., in 2009. Subsequently, Frantzen painted a panoramic view of the town, seen across autumn fields, on 34 vertical panels. In the finished work, the panels hang in arcs across the gallery, with the portraits installed on their reverse sides, creating a composite portrait of a typical Midwestern town. An audio element by John Frantzen completes the scene. Created with an initial grant from the Iowa Arts Council, the work was acquired by the Figge Art Museum for its permanent collection in 2013, thanks to the generous support of multiple donors.

Join us this fall for the exhibition Giving the Devil His Due: The Art of Gary Kelley, a visual exploration in drawings and monotypes of the tortured souls of two legendary musicians: the 19th-century violinist and guitarist Nicolò Paganini and his 20th-century counterpart, blues guitar legend Robert Johnson. Though their lives were divided by a century, both shared a restless intellectual and emotional urge to master their instruments and, according to legend, sold their souls to the devil to achieve perfection! Similarly possessed by an intellectual urge, artist and music lover Gary Kelley explores these parallel lives in the artwork he created for two award- winning books, Dark Fiddler, The Life and Legend of Nicolò Paganini, written by Aaron Frisch, and Black Cat Bone, The Life of Blues Legend Robert Johnson, written by J. Patrick Lewis. Inspired by the expressionist artwork of Egon Schiele and the bold silhouettes of Haitian metalwork, Kelley’s images bring these two mythical stories to life in bold and dramatic ways. Though never intended as companion books, illustrations from each will be exhibited together for the first time. The exhibition also will include new works that connect the disparate lives of their subjects, extending the stories from the printed page directly to the museum’s wall.

for what moves you

Renowned Quad City artist, Raphael Iaccarino

WE pay attention to what matters most. you. Renowned Quad City artist, Raphael Iaccarino, is known by his spectacularly colorful and massive botanical watercolors that not only grace the walls of Quad City landmarks, but also the homes of notables, including Clint Eastwood. However, Ralph’s celebration of the artistic process was colored by a continual battle with spine pain, as well as arthritic thumb and shoulder pain. rough a series of surgeries and pain management procedures, the fellowship-trained surgeons at ORA Orthopedics have allowed Ralph to regain his ability to create once again - without pain. Ralph is now looking ahead to his 7th decade, his creative passion is now colored with joyous optimism, “My best work is yet to come.”
