The Beatles revolution- ized the recording process using technology to achieve completely unprecedented sounds and arrangements. Until then, popular music recordings were simply faithful reproductions of a live performance. Over the past fifty years, recording and production techniques have advanced so far that another challenge has arisen: it is now very difficult for performing artists to give a live performance that has the same impact, complexity and nuance as a produced studio recording. -
The Ethereal Genius of Craig Taborn - the New York Times
12/20/2019 The Ethereal Genius of Craig Taborn - The New York Times FEATURE The Ethereal Genius of Craig Taborn He has become one of the best jazz pianists alive — by disappearing almost completely into his music. By Adam Shatz June 22, 2017 he jazz pianist Craig Taborn often goes to museums for inspiration, carrying a notebook to record ideas for compositions and song titles. He also sometimes T performs at museums, becoming a sort of art object himself. This is a complicated situation for Taborn, who is very private. His mother, Marjorie Taborn, remembers seeing him at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York, where he played a recital to a full house at the debut of his solo album “Avenging Angel.” After the show, she was chatting with his friend Tim Berne, a saxophonist, while her son signed copies of his album, smiling graciously and patiently fielding questions. She and Berne looked at each other, because they each knew how much effort this required from Taborn. “Look at Craig,” Taborn’s mother recalls telling Berne, “he’s getting everything he never wanted, all the attention he’d never seek.” Taborn, who is 47, is used to attracting attention he’d prefer to avoid, and not just because of his extraordinary musicianship. He is an African-American man from Minnesota with features that often draw curious looks: a very pale complexion, reddish-blond curls and hazel eyes. “I have never had a day when someone does not look at me with an openly questioning gaze, sometimes remote and furtive, sometimes polite, sometimes in admiration or awe and sometimes with disgust,” he told me. -

Snarky Puppy – Live at the Royal Albert Hall
Snarky Puppy – Live At The Royal Albert Hall (50:22 + 48:57, 2 CD, 3 LP, GroundUp Music, 2020) Erstaunlich, welche Acts abseits des allgemeinen Mainstreams mittlerweile die Royal Albert Hall füllen. -

PRESS RELEASE Bremen, 13 March 2018/cp “Music Festival Goes Overseas” — The Long Night of Jazz Exclusive cast: Metropole Orkest, Jacob Collier and Bokanté They are back: the Metropole Orkest and its leader Jules Buckley! The orchestra based in Hilversum is unique in the European music world as it is the only big band with a full string section, and its broad and diverse repertoire has made it the epitome of musical creativity and overflowing enthusiasm in its playing. Now, for the fourth time, the band will be guiding “Music Festival Goes Overseas,” the long night of jazz in the Überseestadt. A Germany-wide exclusive event will find them in the BLG-Forum at 7 p.m. on Saturday, 8 September, when they will meet up with two artists who are equally diversified and happy to experiment: Jacob Collier and Bokanté. Whether Al Jarreau, Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Costello, Shirley Bassey, Pat Metheny, Tori Amos, Brian Ferry, Caro Emerald or Gregory Porter, performances with great artists are everyday occurrences for members of the Metropole Orkest. In 2016, they met the young, highly tal- ented multi-vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier during the BBC Proms. Since his 2013 video (that he produced and directed himself) of a cover version of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t you worry ‘bout a thing” collected millions of YouTube clicks, great names such as Quincy Jones, Jamie Cullum or Herbie Hancock have waxed enthusiastic about the creativity of the 23-year-old from London. His collaboration with the Metropole Orkest continued during the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2017 and will this year go into the third round. -

Jonny King — Biography
Jonny King Biography Jonny King has been described by Downbeat as "one of the strongest piano voices" of his generation and a "bandleader who kicks ass." JazzTimes likewise wrote that he “represents the best of what jazz has to offer” as both a performer and composer. A native New Yorker, he grew up in the City's jazz clubs, participating first as a fan and then as a performer. Before he was a teenager, King had already performed onstage with Dizzy Gillespie and appeared on television at the piano alongside his early idol, Earl “Fatha” Hines. Before he was 20, he was already sitting in with Art Blakey and playing his first gigs in New York's many restaurants and clubs. King is primarily self-taught, having neither received any formal music education nor attended any jazz schools. He gratefully credits pianists Mulgrew Miller and Tony Aless as important influences, mentors and personal teachers. Beyond their private instruction, King learned music in the most old-school of ways -- by obsessively listening to records, attending jam sessions, and soaking up as much live and recorded music possible, from the most traditional to the most avant-garde. He continues to approach music the same way, both as a performer and composer. Beginning in the 1990s, King became a steady presence on the City's club scene, featuring his own bands at The Jazz Standard, Smalls, and legendary clubs like Sweet Basil's and Bradley's, his home-away-from-home, where he performed regularly both as leader and sideman. He toured as a member of Joshua Redman's Quartet and the Blue Note Records cooperative band OTB, and worked as the pianist in groups led by saxophonists Steve Wilson, Eddie Harris, Vincent Herring and many others.
