National Child Day November 20th

The Government of Canada designated November 20th as National Child Day, to commemorate the day on which both the Declaration on the Rights of the Child (1959) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) were adopted.

National Child Day is a day to celebrate children and youth; to remember that children have basic rights and freedom and need love in order to grow to their fullest potential. This year’s National Child Day marks the 23rd year of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). This day holds special significance for the Niagara region, as it is one of the first regions in Canada to institute a Charter of Rights for Children and Teens.

The Children’s Rights Interest Group of Niagara, along with participating municipalities, the YMCA of Niagara, and the Boys and Girls Club of Niagara invite families to visit any of the locations listed on the attached poster for free skating or swimming in recognition of this important day.

In addition, this year the Early Years Niagara Children’s Rights Interest Group will be promoting National Child Day by working alongside organizations within our community and city council representatives from each municipality to host a celebration that includes a book reading and cake cutting ceremony. The events will be hosted at 12 different sites across Niagara such as the Early Years Centres, Parent and Family Literacy Centres and schools with Early Learning Programs. In addition, 7 previous host sites will be holding their own celebration.

This year’s theme: The Right to Practice Own Culture, Language and Religion.
