HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 98

1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING JOHN 2 "JACK" BURWELL REED UPON HIS OUTSTANDING CAREER WITH THE NEW YORK 3 YANKEES. 4 WHEREAS, Mr. John "Jack" Burwell Reed, a multi-talented 5 athlete, is being honored for his outstanding career with the New 6 York Yankees; and 7 WHEREAS, a native of Silver City, Mississippi, and a true 8 Mississippi southern gentleman, Mr. Reed was born February 2,

9 1933, and attended Gulf Coast Military Academy in Gulfport,

10 Mississippi, where he participated in football, , 11 basketball and track; and 12 WHEREAS, knowing the importance of continuing his education 13 after high school, Mr. Reed attended the University of Mississippi 14 from 1950-1954, where he successfully played baseball and 15 football; and 16 WHEREAS, Mr. Reed, while at Ole Miss, played in 17 the 1953 Sugar Bowl against Georgia Tech, and he intercepted a

18 pass with three minutes left in the game to upset No. 1 ranked 19 Maryland; and 20 WHEREAS, on April 10, 1961, while in the 21 farm system, Mr. Reed was called to play for the Yankees and only 22 six months later became a part of baseball history when he watched 23 his teammate, Roger Maris, 61 home runs which broke Babe 24 Ruth's record; and 25 WHEREAS, Mr. Reed, on October 8, 1961, earned his first World

26 Series ring when the New York Yankees beat the Cincinnati Reds 27 13-5 to win the four games to one; and

No. 98 *HR07/R2084.1* N1/2 08/HR07/R2084.1 PAGE 1 (OM\HS) 28 WHEREAS, on Sunday, June 24, 1962, Mr. Reed made baseball 29 history when he hit a home off of Tigers pitcher, 30 Phill Regan, with Roger Maris on first base, to end the longest 31 game in baseball history, which was 22 innings long and lasted 32 seven hours; and 33 WHEREAS, this outstanding moment in sports history is

34 captured in a photo in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, 35 which shows Mr. Reed crossing home plate and being greeted by 36 Roger Maris, and he was also featured on the hit television show 37 TO TELL THE TRUTH due to his history-making feat; and 38 WHEREAS, Mr. Reed earned his second World Series ring in 39 October of 1962 when the Yankees won in the seventh game of the 40 World Series beating the ; and 41 WHEREAS, Mr. Reed, after playing for the Yankees, was offered

42 employment in managing in the Yankees farm system, and due to his 43 outstanding abilities, he worked his way up to being the Manager 44 of the Yankees -A Club in Syracuse, New York, which was just 45 one step away from being the New York Yankees' manager; and 46 WHEREAS, however, as a man with great humility and honor and 47 who has a belief of putting family first, Mr. Reed resigned to 48 return to Mississippi to run the family business after the death 49 of his father; and

50 WHEREAS, it is notable, that Mr. Reed was once asked who was 51 the greatest man he had ever known . . . Roger Maris, Mickey 52 Mantle, or Joe DiMaggio, and he said without a blink 53 that it was and still is his father; and 54 WHEREAS, Mr. Reed, a true patriarch, is lovingly supported in 55 all of his endeavors by his wife, Mable Louise, and their four 56 children, Johnny, Gai, Roy Anne and Swayze; and 57 WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize 58 and commend such an outstanding Mississippian as Mr. John Burwell

59 Reed whose athletic accomplishments with the New York Yankees have

No. 98 *HR07/R2084.1* 08/HR07/R2084.1 PAGE 2 (OM\HS) 60 not only brought great honor to himself and his family, but to the 61 great State of Mississippi as a whole: 62 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 63 REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING 64 THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mr. John 65 "Jack" Burwell Reed on his outstanding career with the New York

66 Yankees and extend best wishes for continued success in all of his 67 future endeavors. 68 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be 69 furnished to Mr. John Burwell Reed and to the members of the 70 Capitol Press Corps.
