Steve Garvey Steve Garvey is a name that even the most casual baseball fan recognizes. His list of accomplishments illustrates just why he is so widely known and respected. He is the National League’s “Iron Man” having played 1,207 consecutive games. He was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 1974 and played 193 consecutive errorless games, the only first baseman in history to go an entire season or more without an error. He was a 10-time All- Star, a 4-time Gold Glove winner and played on the World Series Championship Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981. No wonder even casual fans know his name. Steve retired from baseball in 1988 after finishing his career with the San Diego Padres and is now involved with his own company, the Steve Garvey Management Group. Steve now utilizes the same leadership he once did with his teammates to motivate audiences - and utilizes the drive that made him one of the game's top first basemen - to run a successful management company. Additionally, he has used his extraordinary motivational speaking talents to present to groups, corporations, conventions and universities around the world. His most popular topics include, "Being the Best You Can Be," "Teamwork," "Leadership" and "Integrity in Life and Business." Steve also gives back to the community by volunteering for causes such as Special Olympics, Juvenile Diabetes, The Starlight Foundation and ALS. He is also the National Campaign Chairman for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. It is the dedication to these causes that has earned him numerous awards, including the Lou Gehrig Award for his contribution to Baseball and Society and Major League Baseball's highest honor for humanitarian service, the Roberto Clemente Award. Postseason Recaps, Line Scores, Stats & Records World Champions 1955 World Champions For the Brooklyn Dodgers, the 1955 World Series was not just a chance to win a championship, but an opportunity to avenge five previous World Series failures at the hands of their chief rivals, the New York Yankees. Even with their ace Don Newcombe on the mound, the Dodgers seemed to be doomed from the start, as three Yankee home runs set back Newcombe and the rest of the team in their opening 6-5 loss. Game 2 had the same result, as New York's southpaw Tommy Byrne held Brooklyn to five hits in a 4-2 victory. With the Series heading back to Brooklyn, Johnny Podres was given the start for Game 3. The Dodger lefty stymied the Yankees' offense over the first seven innings by allowing one run on four hits en route to an 8-3 victory. Podres gave the Dodger faithful a hint as to what lay ahead in the series with his complete-game, six-strikeout performance. Game 4 at Ebbets Field turned out to be an all-out slugfest. After falling behind early, 3-1, the Dodgers used the long ball to knot up the series. Future Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Duke Snider each homered and Gil Hodges collected three of the club’s 14 hits, including a home run in the 8-5 triumph. Snider's third and fourth home runs of the Series provided the support needed for rookie Roger Craig and the Dodgers took Game 5 by a score of 5-3.

The New York Yankees, Philadelphia/Oakland Athletics, and St. Louis Cardinals have won many. The Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, and San Francisco Giants endured decades-long dry spells before they finally won the orldW Series. Even expansion teams like the New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals, and Florida Marlins have won multiple championships. Other expansion teams like the San Diego Padres and Texas Rangers have been to the Fall Classic multiple times, although they did not win. Then we have the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs have not been to a World Series since 1945, and have not won one since 1908.
