Issue No.128 October 2020 COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES

2 3 Chairman's Report A warm welcome to Elizabeth Jeakings, who has filled the one last remaining Vacancy on the Parish Council. Liz has lived in Great Houghton for many years and we look forward to her input in future Parish Council meetings. Over the last few weeks there has been a lot of activity in the village, with CityFibre delivering leaflets proclaiming “The digital revolution is coming to your doorstep”. For some people this has caused disruption, and the Council has received complaints. Consequently we invited James Cushing, the City Manager, to attend the September Parish Council Meeting, to present an overview of the project, and to express our concerns. Further information on the work may be found in this issue, on the page headed “A Message from CityFibre”. I would like to quote a few lines taken from a recent email from the County Council. ” County Council has launched a consultation on the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan and is seeking views from the public. The Northampton Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan supports an ambition for Northampton to become a leading centre for active travel, which fully embraces walking and cycling.” Consequently we would welcome suggestions regarding development of local footpaths and cycleways. For more detailed information please refer to https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/planning-for-the-future You might also want to consider responding to the Government's proposed reforms to planning rules by providing a 'fast-track' planning approval process, which may make it far harder to object to applications. You can do this at: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/MHCLG-Planning-for-the-Future/

Many thanks, and stay safe during these difficult times

Bill Garner Chairman Great Houghton Parish Council

89 W.I. News September 2020 Unfortunately, we are still unable to hold meetings, coffee and craft mornings due to the Corona virus pandemic, but we are not too downhearted. Our President had the lovely idea of presenting all members with a “goodie” bag containing many useful items including emery boards, notepad and pen, keyring, hand cream and a lovely walnut whip (why do they not have the walnut on top any more). These were very well received by the members and brought a smile to their faces.

Outdoor committee meetings have continued to take place at the playing field with social distancing being maintained and our own chairs being used. Nice to have face to face meetings instead of Zoom or email to discuss the WI future. As the weather becomes chillier, we shall have to wear more layers, congregate by the hall veranda and bring a flask of something hot.

We have kept in touch with members by telephone, making sure they are staying safe, not feeling isolated and this gesture has been much appreciated by all. It is all so uncertain when we shall be able to hold regular monthly meetings again so speakers have been rebooked for 2021 in the hope that we are back to “normality” by then and we do not miss out on their talks.

I know WI members have been vigilant, supported each other and offered a hand of friendship and help to villagers who have needed it at this difficult time.

I hope you all stay safe and well and we will be able to meet soon. Elaine Fleckney

14 Church Mice at St.Peter's Cogenhoe

A time for Mums, Dads, Grandparents or Carers with pre-school children to be together for songs, activities and fellowship, toys and books to share …. and a cup of tea!

Unfortunately Church Mice has not been able to restart this Autumn due to Covid restrictions. We are of course still very aware of and praying for those caring for young children at this time and the youngsters themselves. We still plan to start meeting again when restrictions allow on the second Thursday of the month in termtime. This may not be until the new year.

Church Mice is a Benefice wide initative for tots and preschool age children AND their parents, carers or grandparents and open to all in the four villages and beyond!

We meet from 2 until 2.45pm in term time on the second Thursday of the month at St Peter's Centre, Church Street, Cogenhoe NN7 1NS Do come and join us!

Thank You Thank you to everyone who helped with the 'Ride and Stride' day on September 12th: manning our churches, riding and striding to visit the churches and sponsoring to raise money for our churches and the Historic Churches Trust. Money is still being collected in so we cannot give a total raised at this point. Yours sincerely Jenny Smith

15 16 The Reader Writes…

The season of Harvest is upon us… as I write this article I have just harvested 3 large pumpkins which have grown in our garden this year- I wonder whether I will turn them into Pumpkin lanterns or just a nice pumpkin soup! In this year when so many of our activities and festivals that mark out our diaries have been cancelled God still gives us our seasons: 'He made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down.' (Psalm 104 v19) The gardens are still bringing forth their flowers, fruit and vegetables. 'He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate- bringing forth food from the earth: wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread that sustains his heart.' (Psalm 104 v14-15) Nature and the marvels of God's creation carry on growing and thriving, providing for our every need – as they have since before the Psalms were written.

In some ways it is no wonder that God's creation is fruitful for he is the master Gardener. Jesus said 'I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he trims clean so that it will be even more fruitful'. (John 15 1-2) God knows when it is best to prune and best to fertilise, and some pruning back of our sometimes overly busy lives may be one of the best things to come out of this whole pandemic, as we learn to value our homes and families more. However to be fruitful Jesus goes on to say that as his disciples and followers, we must remain rooted in him and in his love. ' If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish , and it will be given you' (John 15v7) Jesus wants his followers to be blessed and promises that blessing if we follow his commands and stay rooted in his love: 'If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love' (John 15 v10) 'I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.' (John 15 v11-12). 'I chose you to go and bear fruit- fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. This is my command: Love each other' (John 15, v16-17)

The celebration of All Saints or All Hallows day on 1st November is special as it celebrates all who have been faithful in following Jesus. Our shops so often celebrate all the evil forces, witches and ghosts for Hallowe'en- or All Hallows Eve, but remember it is not evil that has won the day, but the light of Christ. That is why we make pumpkin lanterns- to show that light is stronger than the darkness. Jesus said '“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8v12) Jenny Smith

17 CHURCH SERVICES UPDATE
