St. Thomas More Catholic Parish & School

Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time | February 14, 2021

World Day SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2021 pastor’s note Easter comes early this year. The first Sunday in April, on the 4th. But that means that Lent starts early too. This Wednesday, February 17, is Ash Wednesday. If you haven’t signed up for a reservation for the services on that day, please still make it a day of Fasting and Abstinence. Take time for extra prayer as we start this most holy of penitential seasons.

The responsorial psalm for Wednesday’s Mass is Psalm 51. It is a powerful expression of sorrow and repentance. It is attributed to King David, after being confronted with his affair with Bathsheba and having her husband Uriah killed in battle to cover up his sin. David, filled with repentance and accepting the fact he was not worthy of God’s mercy, nonetheless calls upon his God to forgive him.

Take time to prayerfully read through, and humbly reflect on the words of this psalm prayer. Make them your own as you call out to God asking that He create a clean heart within you. May this time of Lent be one in which we truly acknowledge our own awareness of our true nature, call upon God for His mercy, and strive to enter into the joy of our Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection with a renewed spirit and a heartfelt desire to proclaim God’s praises.

And again, no matter what your Lenten resolution, I would ask that all take advantage of The Search which is a seven week series of videos and then group reflections on our lives and faith and what God has made us for. It is not too late to gather others, even if just your members, and commit to giving the Lord this special gift of your entering into a pointed exercise of input and reflection to guide us to the Easter celebrations. You can find information about The Search on our parish website and on page 6.

Finally, we are beginning the weeks that lead to the culmination of the prayer, study and formation program of the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Those members of our community who have been in this process since last fall will begin the final stages of their movement to the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist at Easter.

They have been a part of the 8:30AM Mass these past several months, and next weekend will have a special ceremony marking their becoming “Elect” in the progression that leads them to the upcoming sacraments. Please keep them in your daily prayers as we enter upon these Lenten days. Pray that the Holy Spirit will draw them to the life giving sacraments they are yearning for, and that we will all be models of lives well lived as children of God, thanks to our own baptism and confirmation and the power the Eucharist and Reconciliation gives to our role of discipleship.

2 SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME a reflection on today’s readings

Grow as a Disciple While leprosy as found in Biblical times is now rare and very treatable, it is not hard to imagine the tragic consequences it had on those who were affected. They suffered physically, but also socially and emotionally: Levitical priests declared lepers unclean, banishing them from the religious community. Jesus, as He did so often, would upend these conventions in His encounter with the leper in today’s Gospel. “Moved with pity,” Jesus healed him, telling him to return to the local priest for readmittance to the community. Jesus’ model of compassion for the man is meant for us to embody. Modern culture continues to stigmatize people perceived as different – those suffering from depression and other mental illnesses, the homeless, perhaps those who struggle with cognitive disabilities – shunning them in different ways from full participation in community. To imitate Christ, as Paul alludes, is to have compassion for the needs of others – to “be moved with pity.” Let us pray for the grace to put on the mind and heart of Christ, and dignify the presence of all our brothers and sisters in our community. Go Evangelize I admit I was taken aback by today’s Old Testament reading: Not only were lepers banished from the religious community, but they had to announce themselves by crying out “Unclean, unclean!” Jesus changed all that. He healed the leper, encouraging him to return to the priest for readmittance. I am struck by how the leper approached Jesus. He did not demand a cure, but asked, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Although it is unlikely that any of us in the developed world will experience leprosy, we ourselves or people we know may carry inner struggles that have led to separation from the Church or a sense of isolation. In our humanity, we do not have the power to heal these maladies on our own. Instead, let us come to Jesus as the leper does, asking Him, if He wills it, to heal us and our wounded world. Let us pray with confidence, knowing that Jesus in His compassion can and will make us clean and whole. Reflect Who are today’s lepers? What are the inner struggles or wounds that may keep us from fully participating in our parish community or have left us estranged from members of our own family? Bring these before Jesus in your own words. Call a family member you have fallen out of touch with. Invite a person who has left the Church to lunch and listen with compassion.
