9/7/2021 ADA Compliant Adult Education Mission “Utah adult education programs empower adults who are at less than a post-secondary level or who have limited English proficiency to become literate. Programs assist adults in acquiring skills and knowledge that lead to further education, future employment, and personal success.”

Adult education services are provided through a variety of program sites facilitated by school districts and community- based organizations throughout the state. Programs in this directory are listed by school district and community-based organization.

Hours of operation (MTWHFS), fees, and types of instruction vary depending upon the program. All students are assessed and provided individual educational programming to meet their needs.

Academic courses are provided to meet students’ need through the following programs:

ESL—English for Speakers of Other Languages program: instruction designed for individuals who (1) were NOT born in the United States or whose native language is a language other than English; (2) come from environments where a language other than English is dominant; or (3) are American Indian or Alaska Natives and come from an environment where a language other than English has had a significant impact on their level of English language proficiency; and (4) by reason thereof, have sufficient difficulty speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English language that would deny these individuals the opportunity to learn successfully in classrooms where the language of instruction is English, or to participate fully in society.

ABE—Adult Basic Education program: instruction designed for native English-speaking adults who (1) have minimal competence and basic skills in reading, writing, speaking, problem solving, or computation; (2) are not sufficiently competent to meet the educational requirements of adult life in the United State; or (3) are not sufficiently competent in speaking, reading, or writing the English language to allow employment commensurate with the adult’s real ability. Includes grade levels 0-8.9.

ASE—Adult Secondary Education program: instruction below the collegiate level for adults who (1) have basic skills and competence levels in reading, writing, speaking, problem solving and computation; and (2) do not have a certificate of graduation (or its equivalent) from a school providing secondary education. Includes grade levels 9.0-12.9.

GED® Preparation—Academic instruction provided to individuals who are interested in taking the GED® Test.

GED®—General Education Development Test: nationally normed exam consisting of four tests which measure ability in the areas of Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science and Social Studies. Passing the GED® Tests are considered an acceptable alternative measure of high school equivalency to advance a person’s educational, personal, and professional aspirations.
