Ursuline Associates Pauline Broadway and Richard Hens traveled to Great Falls, Montana this past July to experience the missions established by Mother Amadeus Dunne, a Toledo Ursuline, in 1884. Mother Amadeus learned the language of the Indian people, gained their confidence and was often instrumental in dealing with disputes between the government agencies and the Indians. She and her Sisters were highly respected among the Native American leaders and they trusted their children to her care. None of these adventures were without hardships of cold weather, poverty, lack of food and clothing, lack of sufficient Sisters to help, lack of finances, and the beginning fortsef to Associates Richard Hens gain the trust of the Native American people. and Pauline Broadway Mother Amadeus established schools (often boarding schools) for the Cheyenne, Gros Ventre, Assiniboine, Crows, Flatheads, and Blackfoot tribes. Eventually she began schools in Idaho, Washington and finally in Alaska. She and the other Ursulines were the first white women to educate the Eskimos. The missions in Montana that Mother Amadeus and the Sisters were responsible for starting include: Miles City, St. Labre and St. Peter in 1884; St. Paul and St. Xavier in 1887; St. Ignatius in 1890; and St. John Berchmans and St. Paul’s Church St. Peter’s Church St. Charles in 1892.

Helping Women Find Hope

Rahab’s Heart, located in the heart of north Toledo, is an outreach ministry for women trapped in street-level prostitution. Year-round, Sisters and Associates volunteer their time and talents through street outreach and dinners to connect adult women in the commercial sex trade to the hope found at Rahab’s Heart. On April 27, 2016, Sisters and Associates joined forces with St. Ursula Academy students and teachers during SUA’s Annual Day of Caring. For the second year, the group worked at the Rahab’s Heart location, getting the yard ready for spring by weeding, digging flower beds, doing spring clean-up, planting flowers, and much more. Whether it’s having a genuine conversation, Sister Beth Hemminger sharing a simple meal, handing out personal care prepares lunch for Sisters, bags, or planting flowers, Ursuline Sisters and Associates and students Associates are offering new hope to hurting women working at Rahab’s Heart. through this life-changing ministry.

Eight Ursuline Sisters are celebrating milestone anniversaries of religious life in 2016. Sister Nelda Chafitelli, Sister Donna Frey and Sister Carol Reamer observed their Golden Jubilee on Sunday, July 17, 2016 with a Mass and simple gathering at the Ursuline Center. On September 18, Sister Margaret Anne Carstensen and Sister Mary Ellen Nagle will celebrate 65 years of religious profession, and Sister Pat Grosse, Sister Claudia Holtz and Sister Ann Marie McManus will be honored for 60 years.
