Derby Fever Heats up with Trio of Final Preps SATURDAY, APRIL 6, 2019 DERBY FEVER HEATS UP SANTA ANITA TO EXPERIMENT WITH WHIP-FREE RACING by Dan Ross WITH TRIO OF FINAL PREPS Next Friday, Apr. 12, jockeys riding at Santa Anita will do so without a whip, according to a letter the Jockeys= Guild sent Friday to the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB), Santa Anita management, the Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC), and the California Thoroughbred Trainers (CTT). Current CHRB law doesn=t require jockeys to carry a riding crop, and as such, Aindividual jockeys who regularly ride at Santa Anita have elected not to carry the cushioned riding crop during the entire race day card on Friday, Apr. 12,@ the letter states. The decision by the Jockeys= Guild and the Santa Anita jockey colony follows a proposed rule change approved by the CHRB at its last scheduled meeting, which restricts riders to using riding crops only Ato control the horse for the safety of the horse or rider.@ The proposed rule change was subsequently put out for a 45-day public comment period, and could be amended before the board votes on it again. • THE 70TH HANSHIN JUVENILE FILLIES (G1) Races for Two-Year-Olds Were Held for the First Time in 1946 at Tokyo
FROM: Masahiro Usuda General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: December 9, 2018 SUBJECT: RESULTS OF THE 70TH HANSHIN JUVENILE FILLIES (G1) Races for two-year-olds were held for the first time in 1946 at Tokyo. As the number of contenders increased, championship races that determine the top two-year-olds of the season—the Asahi Hai Sansai Stakes (predecessor to the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes) and the Hanshin Sansai Stakes (predecessor to the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies)—were established in eastern and western Japan, respectively, in 1949. The two races were designated G1 status in conjunction with the new grading system implemented in 1984. In 1991, the two races were divided by gender into two separate G1 events; the Hanshin Sansai Himba Stakes for two-year-old fillies and the Asahi Hai Sansai Stakes for two-year-old colts and geldings, then renamed “Hanshin Juvenile Fillies” and “Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes”, respectively, in 2001. The Hanshin Juvenile Fillies, which initially started as a 1,200-meter sprint race, was extended to 1,400 meters in 1960 and to 1,600 meters in 1962. In 2010, the race was opened to foreign runners. Recent winners of the race include many successful G1 champions such as 2006 winner and 2008 & 2009 Horse of the Year Vodka (JPN, by Tanino Gimlet) who is the current race record holder at 1:33.1 over the mile distance; 2008 champion and 2010 Horse of the Year Buena Vista (JPN, by Special Week); and 2009 champion Apapane (JPN, by King Kamehameha) who subsequently won the Triple Crown titles for three-year-old fillies—the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas, G1, 1,600m), the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks, G1, 2,400m) and the Shuka Sho (G1, 2,000m)—in 2010.

Toyota Blue Grass Stakes® (G1) Sponsored by Toyota 93rd Running • Spring • 1 1/8 miles • 3-year-olds The Blue Grass Stakes was named for the Bluegrass region of Kentucky, which is characterized by grass having bluish-green culms and is known as the heart of the Thoroughbred breeding industry. First run at the Kentucky Association track in Lex- ington in 1911, the Blue Grass has, from its inception, served as an important prep for the Kentucky Derby. At the Association track, the Blue Grass was staged from 1911-1914 and 1919-1926. The race was revived at Keeneland in the spring of 1937. In 1943-1944, the Blue Grass was renewed as a part of the Keeneland-at-Churchill Downs meetings. In 1945, the Blue Grass was run as a part of the Churchill Downs meeting. Toyota became the sponsor in 1996. The purse of the race was increased to $1 million in 2015.
