FALL 2018 Welcome to the Newest Members of the St. Dorothy Community! In the summer and fall of 2017, St. Dorothy Parish during initiated a study to determine whether it would be feasible after to open a Preschool. The study indicated that St. Dorothy construction... families were sending their preschool-aged children to construction... schools in neighboring parishes and other preschool facilities. St. Dorothy determined that a preschool would meet the need for parish families and help sustain enrollment in the upper school. A preschool with classes for both 3- and 4-year-olds is now located on the first floor of the convent. The school community is enriched by the presence of these young learners this inaugural year. Thankfully, our community continues to be enriched by the presence of the Sisters of Mercy, who have agreed to stay in residence at the convent. Currently, four Sisters reside in the Convent, three of whom minister for the parish. A fifth Sister will join them soon. However, the convent was constructed to accommodate 12 Sisters, so there was plenty of space for both the sisters and the preschool. In May, construction began to convert the first floor to two large classrooms and tiny restrooms for the preschool as well as a kitchen and dining area for the Sisters. The Sisters’ original Chapel was untouched. Renovations were also made to the second floor and updated for the Sisters’ use. At the end of August, about 50 students and alumni came to school over their summer break to help deliver books to the classrooms of the main school and donated toys and supplies to the preschool. The new pre-K teachers, Mrs. Leah Cox and Mrs. Sandra Dunbar, together with their classroom aides, Miss Joanne Dougherty and Mrs. Christine Smith, got together and created warm, welcoming classrooms for their new students. The preschool students are full members of the St. Dorothy school community. They wear uniforms that are similar to the ones older students wear. Students who are at school on Fridays will have gym and music class. Preschool students will participate in some whole-school activities, such as Grandparents/Special People Day. The eighth-grade class will serve as buddies to the preschoolers, visiting a few times during the year and participating in games or craft projects. St. Dorothy School is excited to welcome these new additions to our school family. Students as young as 3 years old meet teachers and friends during the week while learning life’s social skills of friendship, sharing, and kindness. They enjoy learning phonics and math through interest areas, called learning centers, and songs. Prayer and Jesus are woven in all they do throughout the day! I grew up in St. Dorothy’s Parish, attended school here, and was married here. My husband Doug and I raised our three sons in neighboring St. Bernadette’s, which led to some very interesting Thanksgiving Days! We moved to Broomall a few years ago, but I’ll always be a Drexel Hill girl. I feel so blessed to have come back home!

Mrs. Judy Gordon Mrs. Leah Cox, Pre-K 3 I’m very excited to be part of St. Dorothy School. I am a product of the Catholic School System, from Holy Cross in Springfield to Archbishop Prendergast High School in Drexel Hill. I obtained my degree in Early Childhood Education in 2003, and I have been working in the field ever since as an advocate for children. This will be my 15th year teaching young children, and I love being the children’s first experience with school! My husband and I have been happily married for over 10 years. Our children, 9 and 7, also attend a local Catholic School and are involved in CYO sports. You can always find us outside playing sports and enjoying nature. My husband and I have coached many children’s sports teams in the area. We also volunteer in our children’s school. Mrs. Leah Cox “Children are the most beautiful gift and blessing that the creator has given to man and woman. Children are never a mistake.” - Pope Francis Mrs. Sandy Dunbar, Pre-K 4 I am very excited to be joining the St. Dot’s Family. This will begin my 14th year of teaching in the preschool setting. I began teaching at St. Matthew’s in Springfield in 2005 and moved to Holy Child Academy in 2015. I was there for 3 years before deciding to join the St. Dot’s Community. I grew up in the Wallingford area and graduated from Strath Haven High School. I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood, Elementary, and Special Education from Neumann University in 2011. I was a stay-at-home mom before starting Neumann University when my daughter started Kindergarten. Mrs. Sandy Dunbar I live in Springfield with my husband Pat. We met in high school and have been together ever since. My son Brian is a recent graduate from Temple University with a degree in Film and Media Arts, and my daughter Caitlyn began her first year at Millersville University this fall. In my free time, I love to travel, cheer on my two favorite sports teams, the Phillies and the Eagles, and spend time with family and friends. Mrs. Christine Smith, Pre-K 4 Aide As a current Saint Dorothy parent, I have had the great fortune to be a part of this community for the last 7 years. I am very excited to start on this new adventure with the Saint Dorothy Preschool. I grew up in Milmont Park and attended Our Lady of Peace School before going on to graduate from Cardinal O’Hara High School. I earned my degree from Penn State University and worked in the finance industry for 6 years before switching gears from fast-paced numbers to faster-paced little minds. As a child care provider for the last 5 years, I have had the wonderful privilege of working with preschool-aged children during some of their most developmentally important years. I am thrilled to be able to bring this experience to Saint Dorothy’s. Mrs. Christine Smith I live in Springfield with my husband Brian (’01) and our three children: Jason (7th grade), Natalie (1st grade), and Elizabeth (Pre-K 3). In my spare time, you will find me chasing my youngest around whatever St. Dot’s sporting event is going on at the time or spending my summers down the shore in OCNJ. Mrs. Andrea Keeney, 5th Grade My name is Andrea Keeney, and I am so excited for this upcoming school year. I grew up in Folsom, PA and graduated from . I went to Lycoming where I earned my degree in Psychology and Elementary Education. I live in Prospect Park with my husband Justin, son Kevin, daughter Erin, and dog Tootsie. Although this is my first year teaching at St. Dorothy, it is my 10th year in the classroom. I have taught students from preschool age to 8th grade. Before I had my children, I taught in Philadelphia and in Southeast Delco. When I decided to return to my passion, I went back as a building sub in Mrs. Andrea Keeney Penn Delco, and last year I taught 4th grade at Chester Community . I cannot be more excited to start my journey here at St. Dot’s! Mrs. Candice Werner, 6th Grade Hello, St. Dorothy families! My name is Candice Werner, and I am excited to get to know your children this year! While this is my first year here, I have been teaching for several years. I graduated from West Chester University in 2003 with a degree in Elementary Education. My first classroom was in St. Thomas the Apostle, where I taught 7th and 8th grades. After my daughter was born, I took some time off to run the preschool she was attending. After having two more children, I felt teaching was calling me back. I taught the Kindergarten at my children’s preschool for 4 years, and then I took some time off to have another baby! Instead of heading back to Kindergarten, I found myself searching for a position with upper grade students again. And that is where St. Dorothy’s comes in! I am looking forward to a great school year doing what I love most! Mrs. Candice Werner I have 4 amazing children, an awesome husband, and a very wild, little puppy named Ozzie. Marleigh is 11, Holden is 9, Emery is 7, and Bowen is 1. I was born in Drexel Hill, but we moved to Garnet Valley when I was 4, and I still live in Garnet Valley. I love spending time with my family, especially down the shore! Going out to dinner, going to the movies, and spending lots of money at Target are also some of my favorite things to do!

Miss Mallory Genna, 8th Grade My name is Mallory Genna, and I am excited to introduce myself as one of the 8th grade teachers here at St. Dot’s! I am from Havertown and attended St. Pius X, then Cardinal O’Hara High School. Many of my family members attended St. Dot’s, and I have been to many masses here with my grandparents. I graduated from Penn State in December 2017 with my degree in Secondary Education, with a focus in Social Studies. Since graduating, I have also become certified in Secondary English. During my time at Penn State, I was very involved in THON, a 46-hour Dance MaraTHON benefitting Hershey Children’s Hospital for children with cancer. I even danced in THON 2017! I also am Miss Mallory Genna coaching middle school field hockey this year at the Sacred Heart Academy in Bryn Mawr. I am very excited for this year and cannot wait to try some new things! Mr. Brad Cowman, Facilities Assistant Mr. Cowman is a friendly face who is always willing to lend a hand where needed throughout the parish and school.

He recalled that in 1984, Sister Susan Immaculate, IHM, called and asked to meet with him. She wanted him to succeed her as Forensics coach. Mr. Dienna remembers Sister had only one concern, he had no teaching experience. When she found out that he had taught ninth grade Civics and English at Vare Junior High, well, as Mr. Dienna said, “My goose was cooked.” The teams he coached “were the finest children I’ve ever been around.” The students took advantage of every opportunity St. Dorothy had to offer. Mr. Dienna persuaded Monsignor Walmsley, the Pastor at the time, to allow the Forensics students to serve as lectors at daily Mass and on Sundays. The students practiced every week in the church. “I cannot tell you how many of these children won scholarships. There were so many awarded I’ve lost count.” But if you check the trophy case carefully, there might still be a silver bowl awarded to one 1989 team member for extemporaneous original oratory. … and now (the 2017-2018 St. Dots Forensics team)

This scholarship was developed in 1994 to promote and reward academic excellence among students in parish/regional schools. The program provides scholarships in each district of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to students who excel in an independently administered test. Students designated as Neumann Scholars are offered four-year scholarships to any of the seventeen Archdiocesan high schools. The students must meet strict criteria to be eligible to sit for this test. The Neumann Scholarship program is specifically designed for the highest academically achieving eighth grade students who have a strong desire to attend one of the seventeen Archdiocesan High Schools. An invitation has been extended to 22 of St. Dorothy’s current 8th grade students. This is no easy task, and we are extremely proud of their accomplishments in meeting these standards. Good luck to all of you; your work ethic will always benefit you throughout life! Last spring, our 4th & 5th grade students were Blue Ribbon Winners at the 2018 Reading Olympics held at .
