Tke col}aboration between Sh}nshu URivers}ty and Indonesian scieRtlsts has been underway since l984. In 1989 Dr. Anugerah Nontii, director ofa newly opened institute, Research and Developmefit Center fbr Limnology-LIPI, visited Japan as aR invitee of JSPS to explore the opportunity of research collaboration oR limnology between Indonesia and Japan. He discussed with the staffs oR limnology at , , Lake Biwa Research IRstltute, Shinshu University, Chiba URIverslty, National Institute for Environmental Studies and so on during his one-month stay in Japan. A JICA project on cooperative study on app}ied limnology with the Resarch and DevelopmeRt Center fbr Limnology--LIPI started soon after, which initiated research collaboration with logistics and fundiRg. Several Japanese members have conducted joint researches oR IAdonesiaR lakes with Indonesian researchers as the activities of "Phylogeny and Species Differentiation of AditiaMchlbyoclei in Indonesia" supported by the International Scientific Research of Monbusho Science Fotmd (l990-l993) aRd "Watershed Manas, ement and CoRservation of Tropical Freshwaters" supported by the Nippon Life Insurance Foundation (i996, 199g). Aiso in last year, a 10-year JSPS-LIPI Core UAiversity Program C`Environmental Management of Wetland llcosystems in Southeast Asia" was initiated between University and Research and Deveiopment Center fbr Limnology-LIPI. The program consists of four study sub-groups (Forest ecosystems, Agricultural land-use, }i{ydrological coRditioR, Aquatic ecosystems) and is conducted by Research and Development Center fbr Limnology-LIPI, the University of PalaRgkaraya, Hokkaido URiversity, Shinshu University, Kyoto Univeysity, Tokyo University ofAgriculture and technology and so on. Based on this core university program, Peter E, Hehanussa, APU, Director of RDC fbr Lkirinology, Ir. Sulastri and Ir. Dede I. Hartoto, RDC fbr Limno}ogy visited Japan during 19-28 October 1998. We took this epportunity to organlze a workshop fbr the purpose of exchanging up--to-date information and encouraging cooperative research oR Indonesian freshwater environments among the researchers who are interested in this area, This volume features nine papers presented at the Workshop on CurreRt Progress in Tropical Limnology: Collaboration between IndoResia aRd Japan, held at Suwa Hydrobiological Station, ShiRshu University olt Monday, 26 October l998. Many thanks are due to ali the participants fbr preseRtiRg papers・and joining the discussion.
