Dr. NSA Memorial First Grade College, Nitte Annual Report 2016-2017

Respected Chief Guest of this morning, Mr. Kishore Alva, Executive Director and Joint of ADANI UPCL, Nanadikoor, President of the function Sri Yogeesh Hedge, Mrs. Manu Kumari the Director of the Students' Council, parents and guardians of our students, heads of our sister institutions, guests, respected staff members, our well-wishers, and my dear students, a warm welcome to all of you.

Every year at this time, I’m amazed to look back at what we managed to accomplish in one year. So this year’s Annual Report tries to single out those happenings from year 2016 that are truly worth remembering. It’s more than just a sequence of events; it’s an year filled with an exploration of best suited combination between all here for the development of students and faculty members . This comprises of well-balanced cooperation from students and faculty all in good proportion on every single day of 365 days. This in summation with the benevolent hand of management comprises an year. Permit me to make a brief mention of some of the major events and achievements of this year. This is, by no means, an exhaustive list.

Students and Faculty: We have 573 students on roll now, of which 278 are boys and 295 are girls. B.Sc 33, BBM 130 and B.Com 410 students. Of the total strength about 51% are girls. We admitted in this academic year for B.Sc course 5 students, BBM - 41 and B.Com - 160 students.

Results of April/May 2016: Overall results were good. In Final BBM, out of 41 students 36 have passed making it 87.8%. Out of them, 18 have passed with distinction and First class. In Final B.Com, out of 111

1 students, 101 have passed making it 91.4%. Out of them 81 students passed with distinction and First class. In B.SC all the 8 students passed with Distinction and First Class which make 100%.

The overall pass percentage is 91% in I year B.Com. and 95 % in the II year B.Com in all subjects. In I year BBM, 74% and II year BBM, 81% passed in all subjects. In I B.Sc 86% and in II B.Sc 100 % passed in all subjects. We appreciate the hard work put in by all the students and teachers concerned to make such high results possible.

Staff: We have 24 teaching staff and 14 non-teaching staff, 4 teachers with Ph.D. degree, 9 teachers have teaching experience of over two decades, 4 teachers have experience over 6 years. Ms. Akshatha Perla, Department of Languages and Mrs. Swathi P K Department of Commerce and Management and Mr. Karunakar Shetty Physical Education Director left the College for better prospects. Ms.Priyanka Shirva, to the Department of English , Ms. Meenakshi and Mr. Sachin Shetty to the department of Commerce and Management and Mr. Balappa Mane Physicxal Education Director were appointed in the current academic year. I welcome the new entrants to the Dr. NSAM First Grade College family.

Staff Achievements:

Teachers Training Programme : A Staff Development Programme was organized on 4th August 2016 on the topic ‘Project Report Writing’ by Dr. Sudhir M Professor, JKSHIM, Nitte and one more staff development programme on 27th December 2016 on the topic ‘Teacher Effectiveness’ by Ronald Pinto, Former Professor, St. Aloysius college Mnagalore and on the topic ‘ICT in teaching’ by Prof. Rajan,V N Principal, St. Mary’s College Shirva.

Orientation Programme for Freshers’A three day Orientation Programme was conducted for First Year students to familiarize with the Campus from 1st July to 4th July 2016. On 1st July 2016 Prof. Niranjan Chiplunkar, Principal, NMAMIT, Nitte inaugurated the programme. Various sessions were held on the topics like ‘Orientation to Chartered Accountancy Course’ by Mr. Gopalkrishna Bhat Trisha Coaching Centre, , Mr. Joy Martis Asst. Professor, Dept. of Humanities, NMAMIT, Nitte. On nthe topic ‘Small Things that Matter’ Dr. Radhakrishnan Professor, Dept. of Civil Engg. NMAMIT, Nitte, spoke on ‘Creativity and Imaginations’On the second day Dr. Sudhir M Professor , JKSHIM, Nitte spoke on ‘Core Values’and Prof. Sandhya Rao , Professor, JKSHIM, Nitte , Personal Excellence’. On the third day ‘ Individual Effectiveness’ by Mr. Vishwanath Asst.Professor, NMAMIT, Nitte and Mrs. Neetha Kishore Deputy Advisor – Academic and Mrs. Umasankaran Asst. Professor, Depat. Of Humanities on ‘Goal Setting and Motivation’ In between Senior students conducted quiz competition to Junior a students and junior students performed talents show at the end on the third day.

6 Students’ Council Inauguration The 29th Students’ Council Inauguration was held on 27th July 2016 by Mr. Sunil Kumar MLA Karkala Constituency, Karkala and Sri. Yogish Hegde, Registrar, N.E.T Campus was the guest of honour, Mr.Venkatesh Kini was nominated as the Secretary of the Students’ Council consist of 27 council members to lead 12 different associations and class representatives.

AURORA 2016-17 Students’ Council conducted Aurora inter class competition from 03.08.2016 to 30.08.2016. The Finale of the inter-class competition was inaugurated by Dr. Udaya Kumar Shenoy, H.O.D of Information Science on 30th August 2016 . In the valedictory function, the Chief Guest Mr. Vivek Kumar, Branch Manager, Syndicate Bank, Nitte distributed the prizes to the winners of various events. The AURORA-2K16 runners-up trophy was secured by III B.Com (B) and the overall championship trophy was bagged by II B.Com (A).

N-IGMA Pre-University Level Fest was organized on 15th September 2016. Mr. Yuvaraj Chairman. Excellent Pre-University College Moodbidri was the chief guest for inaugural function. Mr. Rtn. PHF Ashok Kumar Shetty, Head Master, Shrinikethana high School, Brahamavar was chief guest for valedictory function. Winners of overall championship bagged by MGM P.U.College, Udupi and runners up back by Christ King P.U.College, Karkala.

A State Levels Inter-Collegiate Under Graduate Fest N-IGMA 2K 17 with twelve different events organized on 8th and 9th of February 2017. Eleven colleges were participated in this fest. Mr. B. Rajesh Kamath, Partner, Bola’s Group was the Chief Guest of the inaugural function. Mr. M Madava Kamath, Rtd. Engineer, NMPT was the chief guest for the valedictory function. SMS College Brahamvar emerged as overall championship of N-IGMA 2K17 and Canara College. Mangalore bagged the runner up trophy.

Parent – Teachers’ Meet was held on 24th September, 2016. Chief Guest of the programme was Prof. Madhava Bhat, Ex. Principal, Vivekanandha College, Puttur, and the Professor in the Post

7 Graduate Department of English, SDM College, Ujire. Addressing the parents he said the ‘Role of parents on the overall development of students’. Around 450 parents attended the meeting . The meeting was presided over by Mr. Prabhakar Shetty, President, Parent Teachers’ Association. During the occasion Parent – Teachers’ Association for the year was reframed. Book Day The College celebrated “Book Day” on 7th and 8th January 2017 in the college library to bring awareness among the students about the learning resources available to the students.

“Rangalokha” On 16.12.2016 The drama troupe of our college has been inaugurated by Dr. Jayaprakash Mavinakuli. Mr. Praveen Kodavoor was the Chief Guest of the programme. The Rangaloka team participated in Inter-Collegiate drama competition conducted by Samskruti, Dept through Rangayana, Mysore at M.G.M College, Udupi on 3rd and 4th January 2017. The drama presented was “Sevanthi Prasanga” directed by Basuma Kodagu. The members of Rangalokha presented the drama in our college in Sambrama and also in S.V.S. High School, Katapadi. The Literary and Wall Magazine Association in association with Kendra Sahithya Academy New Delhi conducted a one day workshop on ‘ Karavali Sahithyada Oodu’on 18th February 2017. The programe was inaugurated by Prof. M. Ramachandra, Retired Professor, Sri. Bhuvanedra College Karkala. Followed by Dr. Shilja Ethdka, Professor, Vijaya College Mulki Karavali Sahithyada- ‘Short Stories’ and Dr. K Saraswathi, St’ Aloysius College, Mangalore, Karavaliya Kadmbarigaru . In the afternoon session ‘Karavaliya Kavyagalu’ by Mrs. Jyothi Chelaru , Kannada Lecturer, Sri. Narayana Sanil Govt. Pre-University College Haleyangadi. Prof Jayaprakash Mavinakuli, Member, Kannada Salaha Samithi, Kendra Shithya Academy New Delhi spoke on the valedictory function.

8  Training and placements cell has started the ‘CA-CPT’ classes in association with Trisha Coaching Center for the first year B.Com students  The students attended information session on ‘Public Service and Defence Examination’ conducted by Department of Humanities, NMAM Institute Of Technology, Nitte.

Annual Sports Day Annual Sports Day was held on 10th January 2017. Mrs. Radha Prabhu, Principal, Dr. NSAMS School Nitte inaugurated the sports meet. Rohith of III B.Com (B). in men section and Rashmitha and Lekhana J D of II B.Com (B). in women section were the individual champions. II BBM with 65 points bagged the Team Championship and III B.Com(B) were Runners with 42 points.

Association Activities The College provided various opportunities to the students to learn skills of organizing and leadership, by encouraging them to participate actively in the activities of various co-curricular & extracurricular associations. These associations work under the guidance of a Staff Advisor and a student Secretary. We have Debating & Quiz Association, Literary & Wall Magazine Association, Fine Arts Association, Career Guidance & Placement cell, Commerce Association, Management Association, Science Association, Human Rights Cell, Prodigy Team, Youth Red Cross Society, Red Ribban Club and 2 NSS Units. These Associations organized 20 Guest Lectures in different topics concerned during this academic year in addition to conducting various inter-class competitions.

11 Prodigy, the by-annual news bulletin of the college, released the first issue in December 2016 and the second issue will be released on June 2017.

Out-reach Activities

Fee Concession: Nitte Education Trust has been providing free education and also fee concession to the local poor students. Current academic year this has extended to 74 beneficiaries. 24 students who excelled in sports Rs. 3,73,700 and 31 local poor students, 38 students received fee concession on the basis of merit Rs. 1,48,750 and 07 staff children received Rs. 1,33500. Total fee concession current academic year to the tune of Rs.6,86,950 We have been providing midday meals from the Students Benefit Fund. At present, 12 beneficiaries are getting mid-day meals.

NSS :

We have 2 NSS units in the college with 150 volunteers. Which was inaugurated on 1at August 2016 by Mr. Chnadrashekar Gowda , Head Department of Kannada, Alva’s College Moodabidre. In addition to week-end camps and Maleria, HIV and Aids awareness programme, Swachatha Programme and Street play was organized the NSS units conducted Annual Camp for 7 days for the year 2016-17 at Government Higher Primary School Yennehole from 27th November 2016 to 3rd December 2016.

Blood donation: We have made the list students who are interested to donate blood and have the practice of sending students to donate blood in case of emergencies.16 students 2 staff members donated blood to a cancer patient in KMC Manipal. Facrory Visits: Every year we take our students for factory visits.

12 Students’ Achievements 2016-17 Ms.Prajna Pallavi, secured 7th Rank in BBM in April- May 2016 examination conducted by the Mangalore University. Mr. Amith II B.Com (A) participated in the Republic Parade on 26th January 2017 in New Delhi The College conducted CA_CPT classes in association with Trish Coaching Centre Udupi. Out of 12 students attended CPT classes, 4 students cleared CPT examination in December 2016 examination. The college conducted Banking Probationary Officers IPBS examination coaching classes in association with TIME Institute Mangalore. Around 45 students of final year have undergone this training. Placements: 57 Final Year students have placed in different companies Northern Trust, Mphisis, Amazon, Grand Torton, Kotak Mahindra.

The students participated in ‘Yuva Chaithanya- 2016’ conducted on 2nd October 2016 by Youth Congress, Karkala. College dance team bagged second prize and Deepashri, III B.Sc won third place in individual mehandi competition. 6. The association also sent the students to an Inter-Collegiate group dance competition ‘J.C.-Jhalak’ conducted by JCI, Moodbidri, on 10th September, 2016 and the college dance team bagged third place in the event.

Dr. Veena B.K 14th March 2017 Belle Monappa Hegde often abbreviated as B. M. Hegde (born 18 August 1938) is an Indian medical scientist, educationist and author. He is the former Vice Chancellor of Manipal University, Co-Chairman of the TAG-VHS Diabetes Research Centre, Chennai and the chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mangalore. He has authored several books on medical practice and ethics.He is also the Editor in Chief of the medical journal, Journal of the Science of Healing Outcomes. He was awarded the Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 1999.In 2010, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan,one of India's highest civilian awards. Early life Dr. B. M. Hegde was born on 18 August 1938, in Pangala, Udupi, India, in an ethnic Bunt family. Education :- Dr. B. M. Hegde is a medical practitioner and has a M.B.B.S from Stanley Medical College (Madras), a M.D. from King George Medical College (Lucknow), FRCP from Royal College of Physicians, London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dublin. He also has a FACC and FAMS. He also

19 received training in cardiology from Harvard Medical School under Bernard Lown, a Nobel Laureate. Career :- Dr. B. M. Hegde is visiting faculty at many universities. He also serves as the Chairman of the Mangalore chapter of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, and has served as Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University He has also authored several books in English and Kannada apart from publishing several medical research papers. Dr. Hegde is an affiliate professor of Human Health, University of Northern Colorado since 2002. He serves as Chairman of Bihar State Health Society's Expert Committee, Govt. of Bihar, Patna. He served as a Member of Postgraduate Medical Education Board, Government of India. He served as Chairman of OHIO University's Indian Trust, Bangalore. He served as Chairman of Ganapathi Engineering College Governing Board, Vellore. He was Editor in Chief, Journal of the Science of Healing Outcomes, Mangalore and Penn. State University, USA. He was Professor of Cardiology [Visiting] London University since 1982. He was Director-Professor, Principal and Dean of Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. He was Emeritus International Advisor to The Royal College of Physicians of London and Edinburgh. He was First Indian examiner for MRCP [UK] examination in the UK from 1988 to 1998. He was MRCPI examiner in Dublin since 2000 till 2009. He served as President of World Academy of Authentic Healing Sciences, Mangalore. He has been a Non Executive & Independent Director of Zydus Wellness Limited since July 29, 2009. Dr. Hegde has 47 years of teaching experience to undergraduates and postgraduates.
