4 [email protected] Community helps Heritage In the last issue of the Community News an appeal was made for volunteers on behalf of a local aircraft museum near London Colney. While many of you will know that the aircraft manufacturer de Havilland was based at Hatfield for many years, probably only the older community will remember the de Havilland Mosquito – better known as the ‘Wooden Wonder’. During the very early part of the Second World War, de Havilland moved its design offices from Hatfield to an old Elizabethan mansion known as Salisbury Hall, very close to where the Saver Centre is situated now. This was to keep secret the design of a new all-wooden aircraft to be known as the Mosquito. A small factory was built next to the Hall, and several versions of the Mosquito were built there, the very first being dismantled and taken by road to Hatfield for its first flight. Two other variants were built and flown off from a field to the south of the factory. The Mosquito became a very important contribution to the war effort by the RAF. It was built in many guises – Bomber, Fighter, Night Fighter, Fighter Bomber, and Photo Reconnaissance being some of them. engines and memorabilia now on display, most aircraft being One of the most famous Mosquito raids was ‘Operation Jericho’ in open for the public to have a look inside. which the prison at Amiens in northern France was attacked in The museum is now known as the ‘de Havilland Aircraft Heritage order to release hundreds of French Resistance prisoners due to Centre, incorporating the Mosquito Museum’, hence the title of be executed. this article, As a result of the last appeal in the Community News In 1947, after the war de Havilland moved out of Salisbury Hall we have had to date 11 people join us as volunteers. “You are made of the stuff of Stars!” So says local author, Andee Georgiou, in the first of her three books for children entitled Mysterious Matters. Book 1, The Beginning, is suitable for ages 6 to 11, and tells how the universe was born in silence when a ‘tiny piece of mysterious energy’ exploded and the stars and planets and life were created. Book 2, Amazing Stars, looks at the solar system, comets, and planets, then brings the reader back to our own connection with the stars, and an introduction to the brain. Brain Power is the title of Book 3, which describes the structure and functions of the brain in a format suitable for World Record Achieved: ages 9 to 14. During the last week of the Joy Stovell attempt the team had to perform 13 shows in order to set this new world record. “This is a really significant achievement for a small organisation; to plan, prepare and execute as many quality shows in so many different places to such a variety of audiences has been exceptional. The show has combined entertainment with a serious message about encouraging and motivating children to be a positive force in their communities. Despite the hard work it has been vastly rewarding to see audiences respond to the practical and relevant message we have shared and will continue to share as we seek to equip children to make a positive difference.” Dr Sam Frankel – Director of Act 4. BENEFITTING CHILDREN AND COMMUNITIES: during the attempt our new interactive show ‘Star Citizen’ was enjoyed by thousands of children, families and teachers. As well as having ‘fun’, audiences were left feeling, ‘motivated’, ‘encouraged’ and ‘uplifted’, keen to get involved in making a positive difference. (More detailed reviews from the show are available on the Act 4 website). ONGOING: Act 4 is currently promoting a new Tour of ‘Star Citizen’ for 2010 and 2011, as we seek to take its positive message to more children across the country. The new tour, aimed at primary schools, community- based groups and churches, will also include workshops that reinforce the themes from the performance as Act 4 seeks to encourage children to think about the skills they have and how these can be used to make a difference in their communities. After 9 months the child recruitment team on 0800 917 0925. returned to Africa; then Christina`s second baby was born, and she was asked to care for an Indian child who became part of her family for four years. Since then more than twenty children have enjoyed a home-from- home environment, and many have remained in touch. In recent years childminding has become more professional and, to keep up with developments, Christina has undertaken numerous courses and workshops in such subjects as childcare and child protection, first aid, hygiene, counselling skills, and various age-related art and craft activities. There is much more emphasis on child development and health and safety now, which means that Christina and her home are regularly inspected by Ofsted. Twice she has achieved the standard of ‘outstanding’, and this year she went to Guildhall to receive her award. Christina generally prefers to take pre-school children but does care for children up to the age of twelve if she has had them from infancy, thus giving continuity to the child. Although she is registered for six, she limits them to two a day, allowing her to give the time and attention necessary for their welfare and development. She sees her role, alongside that of the parents, as preparing a child for school and the wider world. To that end Christina organises activities that encourage social skills, sharing, observing, and developing self-confidence. These will include visits to playgroups, local parks and woods, and the library. For older children, activities might include swimming, travelling by bus and train, visits to museums and places of interest in London, and learning the value of money and how to use it. In addition, Christina has a large selection of toys and craft materials to suit all ages. Each day the children go home with a logbook of the day’s events and developments, which they can later look back on to see how they grew. Christina finds it very rewarding to record their achievements and progress, and believes no other job could be more fulfilling. The paperwork involved in keeping accounts, and writing reports, assessments and policies, is the downside for Christina, but this is overshadowed by the benefits of working from home and being free (within the limits agreed with parents) to work and play with her charges. She also enjoys meetings and outings with other childminders of whom there are

about forty in Potters Bar, who are known for their friendliness, helpfulness, and willingness to support new minders. To Christina, Potters Bar is a lovely place to live in; it is central to everything and child-friendly, and the people are warm and welcoming. Llamas and alpacas are thought Email Bookings: [email protected] to have been domesticated from the wild species of guanaco and vicuña respectively between 6,000 and 7,000 years ago in the Peruvian Andes. In South America, alpacas and llamas are today found mostly in the high puna of the Andes mountain range, mainly in Peru, Bolivia and Chile. Alpacas are used mainly as fleece producers and llamas mainly as beasts of burden. Both species are also used for meat. Alpacas produce a very fine fleece that is comparable to cashmere: it is light and warm, making it great for clothing. The absence of lanolin, combined with the fact that the hairs are very smooth, makes alpaca very comfortable to wear. People allergic to sheep wool can often wear alpaca. Exports of llamas and alpacas to countries outside South exports to the UK only in the late ‘90s, so it is a relatively recent America really only started on a large scale in the 1980s and and expanding market. 21 Potters Bar Community News St Mary’s Church Hall has a new look! Over five years ago St Mary’s Church in The Walk, Potters Bar launched a fund-raising appeal for the refurbishment of their Hall. Massive costs were involved for the replacement of parts of the roof, removal of the stage, which had become hazardous, and modernisation of the toilets, including one for the disabled. A considerable amount of money has been raised from holding social events such as Barn Dances, Quiz Nights, a Magic Night, Attic Sales and Auctions, and we thank all those continue for some time yet. The Hall is an asset to the local who have supported us or who have made donations. However, community, providing an ideal venue for activities such as those the work is not yet complete and our fund-raising will have to listed above and also for Keep Fit groups, Badminton clubs, Parties and Meetings. St Mary’s Church Hall was built between 1914 and1915 and is therefore nearly 100 years old. The main Hall has great character with a beautifully constructed roof made of oak timbers. There is an adjoining smaller Hall of similar style and a fully fitted kitchen. The refurbishment has been carried out in keeping with the style of the old building and where possible some of the original woodwork has been reused. It would have been a great loss to the community if this beautiful old building had fallen into decline. Please continue to support our fund- raising events which are listed on our website www.stmaryspb.org.uk, and do get in touch if you would like to hire this facility.

Others will know this as the Toc H hall and some of you will have seen it change to The Clayton Centre. For those who are interested in the history of this hall, it is relevant to say something about the history of the organisation called Toc H. The origin of Toc H and the reason for its strange name go back to the 1914-18 war. In 1915, in a town called Poperinghe in Belgium, an Army Padre was asked to set up a place of refuge for battle weary troops coming from and going to the front lines held by the allies near Ypres (Ieper). His name was Rev. Philip (Tubby) Clayton. He found a large house, which came to be known as Talbot House, in memory of one of Tubby’s friends, Gilbert Talbot killed, at Ypres. Troops referred to Talbot House by its initials in ‘signalling language’ as Toc H. The house was a ‘haven of peace’ in the war torn area and all ranks were on an equal footing once within its walls. The symbol of Toc H is a lamp similar to those used by the early Christians. The lamp was lit at meetings to signify bringing change from sadness to joy, despair to hope and darkness to light. In 1929 a Toc H group was formed in Potters Bar which in 1945 grew to Branch status which entitled it to its own lamp. In 1975 the new hall was opened by Cecil Parkinson MP. The new hall was used most days by various organisations and for private functions.
