Programme Notes

Carl Orff was born in Germany in 1895 and wrote his most famous work, Carmina Burana, in 1936. Carmina Burana is the name given to a manuscript of 254 poems and dramatic texts mostly from the 11th or 12th century, although some are from the 13th century. The pieces are mostly bawdy, irreverent, and satirical. They were written principally in Medieval Latin, a few in Charity No. 10841109 Middle High German and some with traces of Old French. Some are macaronic, using a mixture of Latin and German or French vernacular. Carl Orff’s Orff used a selection of these poems to construct a choral and orchestral work incorporating his compositional concept which he called ‘Elemental Music’. This is characterized by pounding Carmina Burana ostinati, dance rhythms and simple harmonies. a celebration of “Wine, Women & Song”
