I) and Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. I). Mshawish is a son of Medaglia d’Oro, who is one of the world’s most important sires, and who has also achieved the unique feat of siring Champion Two-Year-Olds in the U.S., Europe and Australia. On the distaff side Mshawish comes from the immediate family of Champion U.S. Two-Year-Old Filly Halfbridled.” Mshawish is a product of the hugely successful cross of Medaglia d’Oro and his sons over Mr. Prospector line mares, one that has produced no less than 29 stakes winners. The dam of Mshawish is inbred to Mr. Prospector, but these crosses will be in the fifth and sixth generation of his foals, and we can also note that there are already more than 30 grade one winners who carrying three cross of Mr. Prospector, so reintroducing this strain should not cause concern.

TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 2018 WILL THE CURSE OF EQUINE FATALITY RATE SHOWS MINOR INCREASE IN 2017, DOWN 20% FROM 2009 APOLLO FINALLY FALL? While the rate of fatal equine injuries remains 20% lower than the rate in 2009, an analysis of data from The Jockey Club=s Equine Injury Database (EID) has shown a modest increase in the figures for 2017 (1.61 per 1,000 starts) compared to 2016 (1.54 per 1,000 starts). The analysis, which was performed by Professor Tim Parkin, veterinarian and epidemiologist from the University of Georgia, also confirmed a 17% drop in risk of fatal injury on dirt and a 30% drop in risk of fatal injury on turf when compared to 2009, when the EID began collecting data. AAlthough fatality rates increased this year from last year, the increase in rates is not statistically significant,@ said Parkin. AHowever, the overall decline in the rate in fatalities since the creation of the EID is statistically significant and reflects a continuously improving safety record for North American racing.@ (Click to continue to p6) Justify | Benoit photo The Week in Review, by Bill Finley IN TDN EUROPE TODAY On the hardwood, and not the racetrack, we learned this week PARISLONGCHAMP BACK IN THE LIMELIGHT that there is no such thing as an irrefutable truth in sports. For more information on the services visit www.pedigreeconsultants.com, email [email protected] or call +1 541 590 3303 or +1 516 528 6559. IRISH SURF A track-record breaking graded stakes winner, Irish Surf is by three-time Leading Sire, Giant’s Causeway. The outstanding son of Storm Cat, both as a racehorse and sire, Giant’s Causeway is now a major sire of sires, with eight of his sons having sired grade one winners. Irish Surf’s dam, Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Surfside, is by Seattle Slew out of Champion Two-Year- Old Filly Flanders, and is three-quarters sister to grade one sire Flanders Fields. The cross of Giant's Causeway and sons with Mr. Prospector line mares has been a tremendously successful one, with more than 150 stakes winners. Irish Surf’s second dam is a Champion by Mr. Prospector son, Seeking the Gold, and as Giant’s Causeway sired Champion Two-year-old Filly Take Charge Brandi out of a mare by Seeking the Gold, duplicating that strain is worth considering. Sources of Seeking the Gold that particularly appeal are Mutakddim and Cape Town (both reverse crosses to Surfside). There are seven stakes winners, two grade one, by Giant’s Causeway out mares by Kingmambo, and there are also four stakes winners, one grade one out of mares by Kingmambo son, Lemon Drop Kid, a reverse cross to Surfside.

Alphabet Soup Fraise Amazombie Gulch Black Tie Affair Little Mike Cajun Beat Precisionist Eldaafer Prized 1996 Breeders’’ Cup Classic Winner AAllpphhaabbeett SSoouupp OFFICIAL 2016 OLD FRIENDS BREEDERS’ CUP PROGRAM Welcome In 1984, under a sunnier sky than anything the Beach Boys ever evoked, I was at Hollywood Park waiting for the gates to spring open revealing the greatest idea in the history of horse racing —the Breeders' Cup. For the uninitiated, the Breeders' Cup is like the World Series, NHL and NBA all in one day. And you might as well toss in the Super Bowl. Over the years, I've attended a dozen Breeders' Cups. I saw Precisionist win the 1985 Sprint at Aqueduct, and Fraise nip Sky Classic in the 1992 Turf at Gulfstream Park, and Black Tie Af fair’s dominating victory in the 1991 Classic at Churchill Downs. Now, they are all buried at Old Friends. And, while their exhilarating athleticism in front of a grandstand exploding with screaming fans still gets my heart pumping, it's their last days, with just a handful of us, that I remember the most. They all showed the same intelligence, grace and courage at the end as they did at the beginning. As we await the 33rd running of the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita, I can walk around the farm and feed carrots to Classic winner Alphabet Soup (1996), Turf winner Little Mike (2012), Sprint winner Amazombie (2011), Marathoner Eldaafer (2010), and dozens of others who participated, including Silver Charm, Hidden Lake, Affirmed Success, Tinners Way, Touch Gold, and Game on Dude.

Old Friends Gulch 1984 b H, Mr. Prospector – Jameela (Rambunctious) Under trainer LeRoy Jolley, Gulch won the Tremont (G3), the Saratoga Special (G2), the Hopeful (G1) and the Futurity (G1). That was his 2 year old campaign. At 3 he blazed an unforgettable trail, winning the Wood Memorial (G1), competing in the 1987 Derby (won by Alysheba) and beating older horses in the Met Mile (G1). At 4, under trainer D. Wayne Lukas, Gulch won the Potrero Grande (G3), Carter (G1), and his second consecutive Met Mile (G1). In 1987 he barely lost the Woodward (G1) to fellow Old Friends retiree Polish Navy, and in 1988, the Whitney (G1)—all but a match race—to Personal Ensign. Each year he raced, Gulch was formidable among the greats. In the 1988 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), he and Precisionist stalked side by side, with Canadian champion Play the King outside them. Down the final stretch Gulch and Play the King surged forward, fighting it out furiously. Responding gamely to Angel Cordero’s urging, Gulch pushed ahead to the wire. He won not only the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, but the Eclipse Award as Champion Sprinter of 1988. Gulch’s magnificence can be judged from the races he won, the company he kept, and the dauntless courage of his wins. Success at stud was expected from the champion with his superb pedigree, but here too, Gulch surpassed. His 70-plus stakes winners include Derby victor Thunder Gulch, Nayef, The Cliff’s Edge, Harayir, Great Navigator, Esteemed Friend, Nasty Storm, Golden Gear, Scrimshaw, his latest star Court Vision, and not least, our own great-hearted Wallenda.
