The findings, based on a long-running survey of 1,500 households across the country, suggest that Americans arc not as sexually adventuresome as they are often portrayed. "This shows that the sexual behavior of Americans is more circumspect and traditional than the libertine impression we get from the popular media and fiction," said Tom W. Smith of the University of Chicago, who directed the survey. A separate survey found that teen-age boys are also less sexually active than their on-thc-prowl image would imply. It found that adolescents seem to be having sex less often, with fewer girls and at a later age than teen-agers did a decade ago. "This contrasts sharply with the view that most young men are sexually promiscuous," said Fredya L. Sonenstcin of the Urban Institute in Washington, who analyzed the results. The case has stirred controversy from the very beginning owing to the juvenile stature of the defendants. There is also current a dispute as to whether the arresting detectives read the youths their rights upon arresting them. An account in the February 20th, Village Voice states that at least two times during questioning, both with and without the defendants' parents present, the Miranda Mike Royko Warning was read and explained to the juveniles. Gampel Pavilion. The win kept the Huskies, 9-3 in the conference, in a first place tic with Georgetown who defeated Scion Hall 68-60 earlier in me afternoon. The ninth conference win gives UConn their most wins ever in a Big Ea«t season, while the loss drops Boston College to 1-11 in Big East play. The Huskies dropped the conference cellar-dwellers by shooting 53 percent from the field and six of nine from three point range. Five different UConn players scored in double figures, including sixth-man John Gwynn who pumped in a career high 18 points. UConn Coach Jim Calhoun wants to sec more from his team going down the stretch though "We got some good performances, and I think we played pretty well. But I just mink that we needed total commitment for 40 minutes. We're down four games to go and wc just want to make sure wc. take advantage of mat and start to be as good as wc possibly can," Calhoun said. UConn, 22-4, failed to bring the game to BC earlier, and instead let die Eagles take the early lead. BC's Doug Able scored two of his 15 underneath with 13:12 left in the first half to give the Eagles a 14-9 lead. On the other end of the court Chris Smith banked in a three on a pass from Nadav Hcncfcld, which began a 16-0 run that all but buried BC. Murray Williams came off the bench to give UConn the tic, then the lead. The junior forward put in a turnaround shot for the tic, dished off the ball to a breaking Burrcll for a layup, and gave a backwards pass to Smith underneath the hoop for a jam. Williams had three steals on the night as well. "Murray, who hasn't played as much, came off the bench and was really the Murray Williams of old, the quickness, the slashing, he made a couple of big hoops, steals, he did really good on the wing, which is what wc needed," Calhoun said. The Huskies remain at the top of the Big East tied with Georgetown. Three-point shooting helps women win 56-51 By Adam Minichino Daily Campus Staff Two statistics go a long way toward explaining the University of Connecticut women's basketball team's success this season. On the defensive end, the Huskies are outscoring their opponents by a margin of 17 points per game and are holding the opposition to a 36 percent field goal accuracy. Offensively, the Huskies arc hitting on 40.4 percent from three- point range to rank among the best in the nation. Both of these factors were influential on Saturday afternoon as the Huskies won their eighth straight game with a 56-51 decision over the Boston College Eagles. UConn (21-3, 12-1) was led by Wendy Davis's 18 points and Kerry Bascom, who added 16 and a career-high 15 rebounds. "I thought when wc played at B.C. (a 65-61 Eagle win on Jan. 17) wc didn't have any offensive or defensive intensity and they dictated the game from beginning to end," UConn head coach Gcno Auricmma said. "We wanted to use our defense to establish a style of play that was no good for diem." Even though the Huskies did not lake the Eagles completely out of their gamcplan, their defense proved up to the challenge down the stretch. After Sue Friisch hit a jumper to give the Eagles a 45- 43 lead with seven minutes to play, UConn responded by holding B.C. 10 only six points the rest of the way. For UConn, the final seven minutes were a perfect combination of defense and timely diree-point shooting. With the score tied at 47, the Huskies worked the ball around until Kris Lamb spotted Davis all alone on the weak side. Davis took the pass and proceeded to nail her fourth three pointer of the afternoon to give UConn a 50-47 lead. "More screens were set today Uian when wc were at B.C.," Davis said. "Everyone else helps me to get die threes." -Sara Cousins/Thc Daily Campus The Husky defensive pressure took over on the next play as the UConn's Kathy Ferrier goes up for two in Staurday's action against Boston Huskies trapped Friisch ai center couit. Laura Lishncss picked up College. The Huskies beat the Eagles 56-51 in a Big East matchup. See page 20
