Head Coach – 5th Season University of Maryland, ‘97 Career Record: 40-29 (.579) Missy Doherty After four seasons as the Tigers’ coach, Missy Doherty has clearly put her stamp on the Towson University women’s program. In compiling a 40-29 overall record, Doherty has led the Tigers to success both on and off the field. The Tigers have qualified for the Colonial Athletic Associa- tion Tournament in three of her four seasons while reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. In addition, Doherty has coached three of Towson’s four All-America selec- tions during the last three years, including junior midfielder Hillary Fratzke, who earned second team notice last season. Playing in one of the toughest conferences in NCAA Division I, Doherty led the Tigers to a fifth place finish in the Colonial Ath- letic Association last season and a 6-9 overall record. In addition, she helped the Tigers earn five All-Colonial Athletic Association selections, a pair of IWLCA all-region picks and a second team All-America honor. Meanwhile, the Tigers continued to shine in the classroom and earned the distinction of being an IWLCA Honor Squad for the second straight year. Finishing with a 7-10 record in 2006, the Doherty-led Tigers garnered success by mixing youth with experience. Fratzke set NCAA records in her inaugural season en route to being named as the conference’s Rookie of the Year, marking the second straight year Towson had a player honored with the accolade. In addi- tion, Doherty had four players named to the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll as the team was selected as an IWLCA Honor Squad after compiling a cumulative 3.207 team grade point average. The Tigers also had three players named to the All-Mid Atlantic Region team and midfielder Shannon Witzel was honored as a third team IWLCA All-America selection. Doherty led the Tigers to their first NCAA Tournament appear- ance in 2005 as Towson won its first CAA title with a 13-6 record, including a 5-2 mark in CAA regular season play. After redshirting last year, Lean has been a welcome return for Coach Doherty and the Tigers during the Fall season. Despite the fact that she has not seen much playing time during the first two seasons, Doherty is con- fident that Lean can do the job if called upon. Doherty says, “Casey is a great game goalie and I am glad to see her back in the goal after redshirting last year.” Meanwhile, Hankinson is an athletic goalkeeper who led the Liberty High School lacrosse team to a pair of conference cham- pionships and earned first team all-county and all-conference honors. A two-sport athlete, the Eldersburg, Md. native also played soccer for the Lions. Looking at the Schedule … During her first four years as the Tigers’ coach, Doherty has tried to play some of the top non-conference teams in the country as a way to prepare for the CAA and the 2008 schedule is no exception. The Tigers will face five teams which reached the NCAA Tournament last year, including local rivals Johns Hopkins and Maryland and CAA rival Hofstra. The Tigers will also travel to Richmond and Syracuse during the month of March, which should prepare the team for the CAA schedule. “We love playing some of the tougher teams out of conference like Loyola, Hopkins and Syracuse,” says Doherty. “Playing some of the top teams in the country gets you ready for the conference and then, hopefully the NCAA Tournament. We want to be one of the top teams and to do that, you have to play the top teams.” In addition to the NCAA Tournament teams from last year, the Tigers will also face local rivals Loyola, Mount St. Mary’s and UMBC during the non-conference schedule.
